  • Despite being a massive and successful franchise, the 2013 Disney film Frozen is often considered to be overrated or even bad. I completely disagree, and here I explain why.

Frozen is such an emotionally mature film presented from the perspective of Anna, who develops maturity rapidly through the events of the story.
Frozen is simultaneously a story that can be enjoyed by older and younger siblings for completely different reasons. Obviously as an older sister I completely understand Elsa’s choices and find Anna childish. While I bet my little sister sees Anna’s choices as understandable and finds Elsa uptight.
I love this movie and I’m so grateful someone sees this movie for the intelligent writing that made it the international superstar it is.

Oh, and you should definitely give Shrek 4 another go. I think it has every right to be appreciated with the rest of the Shrek franchise. The Lore and character exploration are fantastic, and a good unexpected direction when those elements weren’t covered in the first movie. And yes Shrek 2 was fantastic but comparing it to a movie that was clearly trying to build back up the franchise and maybe close it out properly just doesn’t feel right to me. Shrek 4 is a great movie, and I stand by this statement. (Also with a Shrek 5 coming out, I know for a fact people will begin making videos on how Shrek 4 is actually good and y’all are missing out.) The magic of Shrek 4 is that I didn’t think I needed a fourth one, but then everything they introduced was actually really relevant to the story and the characters we’ve been alongside this whole time. Also Rumplestiltskin as the villain is a fantastic depiction of the fairytale character.

I know a lot of people like and defend Shrek 4, but I just don't like that movie. I don't like it for the same reason I don't like Shrek 3: it contradicts the themes and messages of the first two films. In the first two movies, the whole point is that Shrek doesn't have to be who society and the existing power structures say he is. But in Shrek 4, that message is completely reversed. Now Shrek has to be exactly who society tells him to be, or else everything will be destroyed. That message just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and the rest of the movie isn't enjoyable enough to me to make up for it. I just don't like that movie. 🤷‍♂️

@@ExtraordinaryPeoples Ahh I see, I made the assumption that you were part of the group that barely watched it when it first came out and never gave it another chance. I apologize for that. You have every right to your opinion and I appreciate your kind response, thank you.

@madi7178, no need to apologize. Your opinion is just as valid as mine.

The way you explained Hans... really SHOULDN'T have been mind-blowing to me, but for some reason, it was. That whole part honestly made me feel very silly, but I completely get why I was so mistaken. The idea of someone being so perfectly manipulative, so kind yet ill-meaning... it's just so unfathomable, I guess it made me think "What? WHAT?? No! That's ridiculous, that doesn't make any sense, that's stupid! Screw this movie!!!" Because that's something that's just... naturally impossible to accept.
"How could he do this? He was so nice just a second ago!" ...And that's how they get you. That's how manipulative people get their way. They play by your rules, doing YOUR little song and dance, saying what YOU want to hear, and when the time is right... they throw that all away, leaving you distraught and confused.
Of course Hans wouldn't want to marry her immediately, why the heck would I think that? Because this is just another fairy tale for kids where everyone's trustworthiness can be taken at face value? I guess I genuinely, unironically thought "What? No, that's wrong, you can't do that!" It made me confused and frustrated, and in my confusion, I dismissed it as just a meaningless, writers-out-of-ideas, surface-level garbage twist.
Obviously, though, it's much more than that. It, by all means, SHOULDN'T be considered smart, but I think the fact it's so commonly misunderstood and unexpected makes it VERY smart, in a sort of tragic way. It's brilliant, it's scary, and above all else, it's realistic. Something that is, and always will be, really hard to accept. You have managed to somehow completely change the way I view this movie, and I thank you for that.
I will say, though, I lived with my little sisters for a pretty long time around 2013, and they loved this movie to death, so naturally the idea of listening to "Let it go" again makes me want to slam my head against a brick wall until I burst into flames.

Wow, thank you. When I first watched Frozen, I expected that something would happen with Hans, but I didn't really know what. It was just obvious to me that he was a bait and switch of some kind. When the moment happens that he reveals that he's evil, it was an, "Oh, that's where that was going" moment for me. If I was a kid watching it, it probably would have been shocking to me, and I understand why other adults might be surprised at the revelation. And it's fine if people don't like it, but the reasons they don't like it are what I personally take issue with. It really seems to me that a lot of people wanted Frozen to be a traditional fairy-tale type Disney film, and when it wasn't, they just rejected it instead of engaging with what the movie was actually doing. And if people engage with it and decide they don't like it, that's totally fine, but so much of the criticism around Frozen seems to just be that it should have been a different movie, and I think that's really shallow criticism. And yeah, a lot of people are really annoyed by Let It Go, and I totally get that.

YES THIS!!!! I'm surprised why nobody seems to pick up on Hans villainy from the start. As a kid when I first watched this movie, Hans just had an uncanny feeling. Like something was up with him. And at every turn I'll be at the edge like "he's gonna do something now, I'll figure out his deal" and then he would seemingly be innocent and it's like "oh maybe he is a good guy".
Also him wanting to marry Anna so suddenly was a red flag. I get that Anna was instantly ready cause she's naive, sent her life behind closed doors, isolated and Hans seems like the perfect guy. But Hans has much more experience than her, and it seems unlikely that this guy would be so innocent and would just want to marry her on spot instead of going "uhh Anna let's back off a little, we barely know eachother".
