Can I REHYDRATE & REWORK Years' Old Salted Skins?

- I try not to waste things that could be a resource. For years we've been harvesting and processing animals. When we do, I often save the skins. Some have been sitting around dry and salted for years now, which isn't really ideal. In this video I take an old, hard, dry whitetail deer hide and a few salted Boer goat skins and see if I can rehydrate them and rework them. The results surprised me. Enjoy the show!

This gives me hope!!!! I got a bison yearling hide. Washed it, fleshed it and salted it. Left it to dry before I could stretch it on a rack unfortunately. Next step is to attempt to rehydrate enough to get it stretched so I can start the tanning process. Really hoping I don’t get hair slip in the rehydration process. Looks like you didn’t loose any hair!! 😍😍 thanks for sharing!!! Totally success!!! I know bison are a different ballgame but I’m eternally optimistic.
Also- that little whitetail vest is ridiculously awesome and adorable. You folks are radical 🙌
I got a huge buffalo hide my dad salted for me. It's so stiff, but he just salted it, so this gives me hope that I can hydrate it and get something going with it. Thank you!
@@emilyann4549 cool, i hope it works. Let us know if it works out.
@@PapaPepper Well... 😆 It did make it more maleable and softer. We stretched it about 2 inches wider too. The video gave great advice for that!
We re hydrated... but there's still a spot that didn't get totally tanned. And the whole thing smells awful because it was brain tanned without being smoked.
So now I'm not sure if I can re tan that one spot or if I should just cut it off and get to deoderizing. I want to make hats, so I don't need the whole thing in tact, but it's a pretty decent part of the hide. Could make a brim out of it.
My advice to anyone working on a buffalo, do not let that mf get dry. So much work just to realize at the end you missed a spot. 😆 start the project and finish it. No workin on the car in between. Haha
@@emilyann4549 I've had a large deer skin get a bad spot i missed. Good to know on the rehydration. Thank
Meat processors used to sell their hides to leather makers, but that market seems to have dried up and now they can't give the hides away. You might check your local processor to see if you could take a few hides from them. Watch out for draining too much salt into your septic system.
What temperature water did you soak them in?
@@thewoodshed15 room temp
@@PapaPepper I had a cow hide I tanned a couple months ago but it got as stiff as a piece of wood so I did what you did in those video and it came out so soft I will get to put it in my house as a rug
Thanks so much
@@thewoodshed15 that is awesome
Beautiful skins
I love the goat hides they are beautiful. A friend has a couch pillow made from a hide that I admire. It's hide with fur on the front and leather on the back.
You can toss an old shoe in the dryer with them and it will help to soften them as well.
Very interesting. Those are beautiful.
Way cool , n nice job !
The Boer hides are beautiful!
Keep on Pushing Brother
Arm and hammer baby soap with baking soda washes hides great too for smell
Nice vest
Worked like a charm, thanks!
Awesome
Thanks for sharing.
I have two soon to be three deer hides waiting for me to process. 1 frozen, 1 salted and one to skin tomorrow. I'll be watching to see how yours work out. I tanned rabbit hides before but never a deer. I tanned the rabbit with sumac bark and leaves...they came out real soft and pliable.
Could you explain how you "work' the hides? I followed your other video and the Mother Earth News instructions with 3 sheepskins and a deerskin they seemed supple when wet but all of them are stiff like plywood when dry. Thank you. I enjoy your videos. Like the way you are raising your kids.
If you check out the video link below, from 2 minutes to 7 minutes I give an example of how I like to do it which works best for me

If you can make your own clothing, you are way ahead of the game!
Good Morning Peppers!
Very nice
I want to make more with my rabbits hides
Much love xoxox
And she gets me laughing every time. Thank you momma. 😂😂
Those skins are beautiful, great job!
PS, I was wondering if you'd consider polishing up some Jacob sheep horns to make shofars and sell them on your Etsy. I'm in the market for one and figured I'd see if you ever do that before I buy one elsewhere. Thanks for all you do!
Maybe you could Lather Rinse Repeat on the deer hide and see if it gets softer
Interesting
Great Video!
What what would cause hair to fall out of a salt tanned hide? Fleshing too deeply?
That would definitely be one option
@@PapaPepper I'm wondering if that is what I did. We have more rabbit skins to deal with and I'll try again.
Bacteria often causes fur slippage
Can any one guide how to rehydrate the old hides with out loosing the original hair
How can i make the old supper hard cow skin soft again??
So I should be able to just salt n dry the hide and hang it on the wall?
Rehydrating is a good first step. But you have to Break the fibers as the hide dries out.
Then when it is dried out it should be soft and pliable. If not you can shave the hide or use a orbital sander with 60 grit paper. When youre finished the hide should be thinner and have a suede finnish.
But Breaking the hide as it dries out is important.
Yup, i like breaking them as they dry these days
I’ve salted fleshed and pickled my hide. Stretched and nailed to a board and used leder tanning lube. I’ve used the orbital sander with a 60 grit.
Although I’m unhappy how stiff the hide still is. I’ve only tanned younger deer and not actually broken them in properly since they are so thin and end up pliable enough. My question is can I rehydrate it, break it properly? Will I have to pin it to a board again after breaking it?
Could you make bathroom floor mats from the sheep skin? It looks so soft. Stepping out of the shower and standing on one just seams so inviting. Also, the vests are absolutely adorable. The little tails are just precious.
Probably not unless it’s a synthetic hide because repeated moisture would grow bacteria that would make the hairs slip out of the the skin
WHOLE WHEAT!!
Hope to get some info from this!! I totally forgot to use my egg to tan my hide 😭😭hope I can go back. And fix this step
This worked well for me
My guess is that Yes you can rehydrate them
Eeeeew! But I admire what you're doing! :)
What about if I was fleshing while salting and it dried before I could finish making it soft with the rock. Has anyone dealt with this? Do you think I could rehydrate it and let it dry enough to continue with the rock. Note: it is still stretched out on a pallet just super hard and still needs some work.
I would try it. I was inpressed with rehydration
mink oil mack neats foot oil softening
Looks like you have enough hides to make several outfits
Love the deer vest
Thanks. Us too
No tanning solution? Won't they rot over time?
The tanning solution I use is actually a pickle. It it 2 gallons water with one cup salt and one cup alum in it. I use that for two days and then add an additional cup of salt and an additional cup of alum and leave it for another five days, stirring at least twice daily before rinsing and starting the drying/breaking process .
1st! Woo hoo!
Woo Hoo!
brain tanning check that out.
what happened to your forehead ???? hugsssssss
