If someone really wants to go to college and not have to take loans to do it, options are available. You learn to be proficient in your field in the workforce, not in a classroom, but I assure you that in many professions that piece of paper is very important to get your foot in the door. Application gets thrown in the garbage without it. Wouldn't be where I am without mine.

Speaking from experience, I think it’s the fact that going to college and getting a degree is pushed so much in HS. And they sometimes shame you for not doing so. There are plenty talented folks out there who are wasting their time in college. They should also keep in mind that their “dream career” might start off as a side hustle, whilst they work a job to put food on the table etc

I dont think you should go to college if youre not sure about what you want. 60k is a big price tag for something you don't even want anymore. So many four year degrees have such bad returns. If the job you want to get with your degree doesn't clear any debt you aquire in school in less than five years, its automatically not worth it.

I didn't have anyone to tell me why I shouldn't go to college. My parents are in Mexico and it was the only thing my counselors said I do without having to continue working in agriculture. I got a communications degree but have not been able to get any gigs in Public relations. Currently work for a call center, but on the weekends I have been working as a photographer and booking clients on the weekend. It took me a long time to finally get clients paying for sessions. What worked for me was also working with local businesses and providing social media marketing for their companies. I work with a Taqueria providing drone videos and pictures of their monthly specials as well as food photography. It's been almost a year and this is one way I am adding value to myself with my degree so when I land a job as a social media marketer or photographer I have some experience to help me add to my resume. You can do this, it's gonna take a lot of work but its possible.

exactly. personally I like to say SEM because you don't need a degree for tech anymore. There's free info online, courses & companies like Google don't even care for degrees

I disagree. Although the STEM fields are highly desirable, so is digital advertising. A person who knows the ins and outs of that and SEO is also highly desirable.

It’s a good degree, you don’t know what you’re talking about. To say only STEM degrees are useful is ignorant

Communications in 2021 is ver relevant. It has to go with the right person though....

Either a day when the wedding photographer does not show up, or s/he forgot to put film in their camera. Either way, be ready to take your place as photographer and shine.

Not a great major for someone like the caller, who doesn't seem sure about what he really wants to do. Students frequently fall into communications when their 1st choice major doesn't work out & they want to salvage a degree from all their credits.

Another idea, start getting on car forums, go to cars and coffee. People with cars love good photography.
