  • There’s a cheap concoction one can make at home that safely wipes out cavity-forming bacteria on our teeth better than chlorhexidine mouthwash and also reduces their plaque-forming ability.

    I now just keep a mason jar filled with cold-steeped green tea (Cold Steeping Green Tea nutritionfacts.org/video/cold-...) with a spoonful of amla in the fridge and swish and swallow any time I’m rummaging around in there. For extra credit you can gargle a bit with it too (see my video Can Gargling Prevent the Common Cold? nutritionfacts.org/video/can-g....
    Green tea shouldn’t be the primary beverage of children, though, as the natural fluoride content may cause cosmetic spots on the teeth. For more check out my video Childhood Tea Drinking May Increase Fluorosis Risk (nutritionfacts.org/video/child....

    Another reason we may want to avoid antibacterial mouthwashes is that they can kill off the good bacteria on our tongue instrumental in enhancing athletic performance with nitrate-containing vegetables. See my video Don’t Use Antiseptic Mouthwash (nutritionfacts.org/video/dont-....

      I don't use mouthwash, but, along with twice daily teeth brushing and flossing, I do use a tongue brush to clean my tongue and cheek gums. Brushing my tongue really helps with freshening breath, but now I am wondering if I'm doing more harm than good. Any studies or thoughts on tongue brushes affecting the "good" bacteria in the crevices of the tongue?

    • @downbntout
      @downbntout 7 років тому

      If you clear off some bacteria, no worries, the tongue won't be sterile, there will always be plenty of every kind of bacteria. Intelligent question though. Btw, your tongue will be a little cleaner if you use a scraper, like a teaspoon with a good edge, not too blunt.

    Very interesting stuff about green tea. As always, many thanks for the video.
    I do a mouthwash mixed with 1 cup aloe juice, 1 cup distilled water, 1 tbsp baking soda and five drops of (high quality) peppermint essential oil.
    When I had bleeding gums (a few year ago), I tried "The Natural Dentist" mouthwash and it was the only one out of all the mouthwashes that I tried that worked well and cleared it up. I did a little online research, and figured out how to make one on my own. (above recipe)
    I'm not sure if this is scientifically proven to work also, I've been curious if there is any health issues with this practice but it has seemed to work very well for me.

  • @CSWRB
    @CSWRB 6 років тому +4

    I'm all in for the green tea mouth rinse and drinking green tea after meals would be great too, but I have to question the addition of amla. Wouldn't the fruit acids in the amla (gooseberry) be caustic to tooth enamel? So while the amla does reduce plaque bacteria, it could also possibly wear away at your teeth.

    Why did chlorhexadene turn my mouth black? It didn't happen to my husband or mother. I thought maybe related to all the blueberries I eat! Scary. Glad I stopped using it (a few years ago).
    On the other hand, a couple weeks after starting amla powder in my breakfast, I started experiencing extreme dental sensitivity. Maybe it's so acidic that it's burning everything off my teeth? Could be something else totally.

    So you brew a normal green tea and then just swirl it around in your mouth and keep it in there for a while? Could you brew the tea in advance or does it need to be fresh? I could like brew a cup every three days and use it. Also I love drinking green tea sweetened with xylitol already, so that should be a double whammy. I don't get diarrhea or any problems from it.

    • @mp-zf4ur
      @mp-zf4ur 10 років тому

      I'm testing this. I got 3 batches of tea leaves in different strengths. So far the strongest one (basically looks like brown water) leaves the teeth kind of rough and the mouth dry but so far its doing a great job. I brewed it all at once and I'm worried it might go off so I actually think just having that first cup of tea in the morning and doing a wash (and drink it if you want) would probably be a lot better. Taste wise, if it's really strong like I have it - it is awful to drink but it is cheap.

    • @Going801010De
      @Going801010De 10 років тому

      Thanks :D That sounds amazing. So basically having a good strong cup of green tea in the morning would probably be the best solution. The thing with green tea is that I always need to let the water cool for 5 minutes or so after boiling because you can't pour boiling water over green tea. So I'd just prefer to integrate this into my day as painlessly as possible.

    • @mp-zf4ur

      Check out the last video Dr. Greger made about alcohol. Acetaldehyde is produced within seconds in the mouth even holding alcohol in the mouth and then spitting, putting such mouthwashes in a bad light.

    How about a mouthwash with green tea, amala, and xylitol... Though Dr Greger may have a video on the ill effects of consuming xylitol, I want mouthwash that's not for consumption. Gum is another possibility, see attached link . ua-cam.com/video/Q2nGH4VgeAk/v-deo.html

    MAJOR WARNING REGARDING MOUTHWASH DANGERS:
    The mouth microbiome is essential to maintain nitric oxide reactions - N.O. is vital for healthy arteries, and as a neurotransmitter. Killing off the mouth microbiome with alcohol mouthwash will adversely affect your cardiovascular health. The flouride also disrupts N.O. in your body. For this reason, both mouthwash and flouride in general should be avoided.
    Instead, good teeth and oral hygiene can be achieved with a sugar-free wholefood vegan diet.

    Is Vegetarian a legal medical definition to really mean Vegan in these studies? or do they mean lacto ovo vegetarian when they say vegetarian, as we know it more commonly?
    It is hard to cite these studies when they are advocating in layman's terms eating eggs and milk, if and when they are actually strict vegetarians in the study.
    What is the current medical definition of Vegetarian as they exist in these studies? do they include animal products or are they really just saying Vegan?

      And of course you can eat a healthy or unhealthy diet no matter what classification you fall under, it's like talking about 'carbs' without specifying whether you mean things like sugar or things like wholemeal grains. No wonder there is confusion.
      PS I think in the studies they will specify these things, just when lay people talk they generally don't.

    DID YOU KNOW?: plaque on teeth is soft scummy whitish stuff. SOFT. It is not tartar, mineral, calcium, or hard! Did you know that? PLAQUE IS GOOEY. (it's true. They went and chose a word for it that rhymes with 'crack' and sounds like rock. Shoulda named it 'schmuzz' or something.)

    It's better to reduce the amount of sugar.I don't like green tea since it has caffeine in it.I prefer chamomele which is caffeine free suitable for relaxing nerves in stressful situations.
    A strong chamomile tea makes a good mouthwash also that relieves mouth ulcers and canker sores. It even helps control periodontal diseases.Chamomile is an antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic that has many other uses
    Unlike many herbal teas which taste bitter, chamomile tea is delicious.

    What bothers me with many of Dr. Greger's videos is that they seem to end too soon. This video is a typical example. What is the formula for the mouth wash that one should use? How much green tea? How much amla? For how long, etc. He never says.

Just imagine if the food channels on UA-cam provided no specifications for the amounts needed for the various ingredients in their recipes. You think there wouldn't be an outcry calling for measurements?

    There is no reason for bad breath if one performs good dental hygiene. I have never had bad breath - ever. I pull with coconut oil nightly, I floss a few times a day, I brush at least five minutes each time and I rinse with peroxide once a day. I also have a toothbrush just for my tongue. I even have allergies and still don't have bad breath. I can eat raw garlic and raw onion, brush my teeth and no smell at all.
