They'll also do that when a virgin queen goes out to mate. I've also had two swarms to merge. Beekeeping goes back in my family to my great grandfather who kept bees in hollow log sections. I learned from my great uncle who had kept honeybees for 50 years. Swarm season is a busy time, I've caught four so far. Good luck!

I got to experience a swarm once so far. It was so amazing, they were all just flying around pretty chill. It was something of wonder for sure. They ended up in the highest branch possible but we got them down ❤️. After 4 years of beekeeping I still feel like a beginner and really appreciate channels like yours.

We actually “tanged” a swarm down for the first time this year…actually it has worked twice this year! We’ve tried several times in years past when we’ve actually seen
A swarm happening and it never worked but it does work! The first ones were headed for the tip top of a huge pine tree and had started to settle and we started banging and within probably 2 minutes the started lowering and we got them into a box! It was so awesome!

I was able to stand in the middle of a small swarm last year in Arizona. It was very fun. I helped the guy capture two little "balls" of bees before I had to leave. I was informed that there were 3 balls with one queen. He captured them all and added another hive to his backyard. So neat :)

I have a long langstroth as well that swarmed. From what I heard by the experts. I didn't move my honey barrier frame out more; essentially the bees thinking there is no more room in the hive. Hence creating swarm cells.

Yes indeed magical - an excellent if not slightly dramatic audio visual feast on just how unpredictable beekeeping can be - and super useful how to lesson on preemptive splits. Metal clinging to call the swarm down to earth is known to mountain beekeepers in southern Albania as is curiously the sprinkling of water in the air - the thunder explanation makes perfect sense so thank you! Sometimes the swarm lands nearby, other times it flies away!

Though I must admit it seems like a really exciting event to be in the middle of. On video the sound kind of feels relaxing but how do you keep from panicking? I was stung once by accident. I reached in a box to pick up a lens cap and a bee was on it I didn't see. I can't imagine handling a ball of bee's on purpose. I know the value of bee keeping and that bee's are being killed off by monsanto. I watch your videos to learn but just out of amazement also. Since my hives are in my backyard, I’ve had the opportunity to try misting swarms on quite a few occasions. What I’ve found is that a light spray applied when the cloud of bees is still swirling all around and within, say, 15 feet of the hive, the swarm will return to the hive. If some portion is up 25-30 feet overhead or has moved off that far to one side, they won’t return. However, by combining the misting with clanging I’ve had a couple of large swarms leave my hives and quickly settle into a low shrub behind the house next door.

Always magical to stand right inside a swarm. Even better without any armour. Better still when your know they will house themselves as planned all along.
It's a good strategy to place several bait hives (nuke boxes and full size both work) and ideally at around 2m sweet spot height around all your apiary sites. Most swarms land at that height and swarm around 1 hour after sun max (real noon). For conventional wax frames make pop holes in middle of brood chamber and relocate queen cups or cells there makes for quicker finding of activity. The cells at base of frame suggest hive running hot and gapping chambers with "matchsticks" may resolve that. The bees will propolis over excessive chilling. Those same low cells are more vulnerable to chill and damage so higher placement mid-brood is preferable in my opinion. I ran many double brood chamber Langstroths, big strong colonies, that facilitate easy increase and ensure adequate brood space and stores. You might also try double queen setups with maybe intended split in mind but using combined heat and ventilation of two colonies in same stack to good effect. However, it does make for heavy hefting.
Always advise run an empty super/s on all hives with sheet of lightly perforated newspaper in between. If they want the space they will use it. The same method can be employed on full intended/envisioned stack and can prevent swarming from lack of available space. Bait hives placed always; you'll probably get a lot of neighbours bees as bees soon know they are there and to considerable distance; your neighbours bees will know.

I believe the tanging also sometimes causes the queen to return to the hive, fearing and impending storm. I have had this happen 4 or 5 times. I found the queen once on the front of the hive and another time in the grass in the grass in front of the hive. Two other times the swarm hung from the bottom of the hive stand. Only once did they actually go back into the hive, and then swarmed a couple hours later.

The pro nuc boxes are ovens for cooking bees they have to be in full shade all day long or you will kill the bees. I have had a hive swarming and take a box set it in the middle of the swarm with the top off and several frames in it and put a little bit of swarm commander on the frames and they fly right in. ❤️🐝

I'm guessing - maybe the shaking a piece of metal sheet to imitate thunder would work better than clanking? And you could also try a YT video with thunder as loud as you can. Could bee :P interesting to hear, if anyone has any results from these things. At least I already have learned something from my first of your videos. Greetings from Denmark

When hives swarm in nature normally they are the only hive in the area..In your yard you have many colonies . The swarm with a laying Queen .they take to the air wow the entire bees in the area are excited . Some of the bees join and the swarm can get a huge swarm even lost within the roar taking longer flying around your apiary yard . But getting more bigger in size as the older nectar full bees from other hives join it.However a second swarm can also come from the hive as virgins hatch the hive can have many virgins hatching to many fights so off she goes out of the hive .we call these casts ,some gentics can swarm more than once . The casts can be the size of a tennis ball pitching in a tree .weather conditions nectar conditions ,size of yard have impacts .The cast can get bigger just by flying around your yard .Swarms can an do join together eg( More than 1 queen).swarming in a yard can reduce the flying bee's in your yard as they join the swarm .cast swarms virgin queens can be very small .in good flow conditions queenless hives in your yard can be a target for these type of swarms as they can be accepted into this hive without fuss ..Different story if no flow on . Small swarms more likely virgins .
Large swarms more likely more than one queen .after all its very possible in beekeeping yards ,less likely in the wild as colonies are not close to one another .You can write a book just on swarming many factors play a part on why when, where ,awesome

I was always told that swarms were the result of restricting space in a hive and that you needed to put in more supers to prevent it?

    • @TheHoneystead
      @TheHoneystead  2 роки тому +2

This hive is a different hive to where you don’t add supers and even with added space, they still wanted to swarm!

I have had better luck moving the queen out. And letting the new queen have the old hive. What has happened is they make more cells and still swarm with that old queen.

Every time I see a peanut --- bam, split!
Earlier this week one of my hives did one of those 'fake swarms.'
I've never seen that before. They all flew up to the branch (which was above my go gitt'm height). All I could think was - bees, have a nice journey! As soon as they returned I split the daylights out of them.
I don't know where the original queen was so I left each split weak, but with -queen cell,- I mean, peanut.
When each of these single frame splits (if) gets mated...Then I'll give them a couple more frames of goodies. No mated queen, then recombine.
I live in town...I joke about having too many hives, but I'm up to 42 (this is at my house in Austin TX).
As soon as my truck gets going (picking up transmission Monday), I need to haul most out of here to my out yards. Jeasch. 42. Way too many. That's what happens when you massively over feed (not complaining).
That tanging thing I've tried once, but it didn't work.

Get the boxes off the ground ..there are mites getting in to your hives... And make the boxes 3 deep instead of 1 bigger the hive the better quality honey
