What the Shaykh said is a good explanation, but what he left out is that not all of the Imams consented to their fiqh being followed and because these imams were followed, it facilitated the development of their fiqh into being able to run entire empires. @@hduendvshis You read their proofs from their books of fiqh and you see which makes more sense and more backed with sahih ahadith. You cant just read sahih hadiths like the comment blow says. There are many hadiths on one subject and may seem contradicting but in essence are not thats why there are scholars of hadith and fiqh that take in the context of all ahadith along with the Quran to derive a ruling on a specific subject. In the books of fiqh you will see their proofs with all the context of all the hadiths. Thats assuming you dont want to do taqleed like most Muslims do.

The imaams, may Allah be pleased with them, were fallible so taking their opinion for everything despite being shown evidence to support otherwise is not something to be proud of. Allah gave us aql and a mind to use it with. With that being said, everyone should definitely learn a madhab (that of their locality as advised by many ulema) to start off with, and if they choose to be a student of knowledge/further learn then they should definitely be open to leaving that which is contradictory. For example, many people who studied the shafi'i madhab have learnt that touching a woman breaks wudu but upon hearing/learning the other opinions based on authentic narrations they don't follow it. This differs from 'fatwa shopping' as it's not based on following ones whims/desires and taking opinions from scholars with opinions that go against the consensus i.e ibn Hazam's view on music

What the Shaykh said is a good explanation, but what he left out is that not all of the Imams consented to their fiqh being followed and because these imams were followed, it facilitated the development of their fiqh into being able to run entire empires. They also better preserved. Hence, a person can easily study the usool of Imam Malik but they cant study the usool of Layth ibn Saad.

You cant just read sahih hadiths like the comment blow says. There are many hadiths on one subject and may seem contradicting but in essence are not thats why there are scholars of hadith and fiqh that take in the context of all ahadith along with the Quran to derive a ruling on a specific subject.
In the books of fiqh you will see their proofs with all the context of all the hadiths. Thats assuming you dont want to do taqleed like most Muslims do.

@@hduendvshis laymen people should do taqlid, not those who have acquired more knowledge. If something directly contradicts an authentic hadith then it should be left. The imaams, may Allah be pleased with them, were fallible so taking their opinion for everything despite being shown evidence to support otherwise is not something to be proud of. Allah gave us aql and a mind to use it with. With that being said, everyone should definitely learn a madhab (that of their locality as advised by many ulema) to start off with, and if they choose to be a student of knowledge/further learn then they should definitely be open to leaving that which is contradictory. For example, many people who studied the shafi'i madhab have learnt that touching a woman breaks wudu but upon hearing/learning the other opinions based on authentic narrations they don't follow it. This differs from 'fatwa shopping' as it's not based on following ones whims/desires and taking opinions from scholars with opinions that go against the consensus i.e ibn Hazam's view on music
