"With all due respect"... Now he're someone who actually means that. I honestly sensed absolutely no attack on Bishop Barron. Dr. Martin is simply helping shed more light on what the Bishop said.

I'm Catholic and I was appalled and saddened by some of Bishop Barron's remarks. Jesus is the only way to Heaven. As Christians we can pray for them, that God will bring those other religions closer to him, that they may be brought to Christ. The narrow road is the road to Christ. Only through Christ is there salvation.

This is exactly what good and proper fraternal correction looks like. If only more in the church did this. We correct and guide and help each other along the way to salvation.

“Only God knows.” To me, that was the most salient point of this talk, as it was of Bishop Barron’s. We can all get into a bluster over our assessment of the state someone else’s soul, but we’d all do well to remember that despite the treasure we have in the Church’s teachings, they don’t trump God’s will and judgment, which we will not know fully on earth.

How wonderfull to know that Catholic Church has a ministriy like yours to open the eyes of people to see their need to seek the Lord and His word much more each day for our salvation. God continue to bless you dear brother and also Peter Herbeck. Most Catholics don’t even realize this vital need to seek Our Lord and his word each day. XO. Annie Frankle

Thank you so much for this. I happened to find a Mass offered from St. Martha’s parish in New Jersey, where the priest added this exact topic in his homily. Almost exactly word for word what Bishop Barron said in his message. I’m so glad you responded in what is a very strong way with Charity. Jesus Himself is so clear on this topic. I pray for those who have knowledge of Christ, yet have chosen other religions. It is veiled Universalism - something I experienced specifically in the Episcopal church in the mid nineties. Please keep speaking Truth.

What I really like about this video, other than the content, is that it's a 20 minute piece to camera, no edits, not cutaways to pictures or video. A human holding your attention on UA-cam by just talking about something interesting. No flashy stuff. A lost art it seems these days. Bravo.

Thank you, once again. Dr. Martin, for your wonderful clarity on this issue. I wish I'd had this knowledge during my high school teaching days on the subject. Thankfully, I can still use it in my diocesan and parish RCIA work. The only question the kids ever wanted answered was "Do I have to be Catholic to be saved?" The instant you say, "No, but..." you can palpably feel all the light bulbs shut off in their heads. In their minds, all they hear is "I don't need to be Catholic to be saved." Your explanation here really re-kindles the reality of the urgency of being Catholic---which, of course, is ultimately about our relationship with Our Lord (and all that goes with it). Your answers in this careful and fully thought out teaching here gives us the important baseline to turn the light switches back on from "No, but..." to "If you think you're going to be saved without being Catholic, good luck with that. Now, let me tell you why." The three conditions and three final sentences you point out in LG no, 16 really hammer it home. I especially love your line, "We aren't working through salvation in a neutral environment," and in fact, as you state so well, not only is it not spiritually neutral, is a spiritually hostile environment at the center of which is our egotistical self in which we perceive ourselves as God (i.e., the most violated sin is the first commandment) enhanced by the radical effects of Original Sin. "Wide and easy is the road that leads to destruction and MANY there are who are following it. Narrow the path and difficult the way that leads to salvation and FEW there are who find it." "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, NO ONE comes to the FATHER but through me," not through Buddha, not through self-contemplation, not through the universal brother and sisterhood of believers or any false religion, but through Christ.

Wear your armor everyday against the evil one. Eternal life is real and God wants us with Him, His Son, and the Holy Spirit, Mary, Joseph, and all the saints. Hi, Mr. Martin, I am reading through your book Church in Crisis. I am not a Catholic yet but am member of Presbyterian denomination of Protestant church. My denomination is encountering a crisis in dealing with social justice issues and LGBTQ+ (from Revoice movement) issues. My denomination along with Catholic Church are under an assault from cultural Marxism. I am conservative and concern about corruption of theological terms and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Beautifully and thoroughly handled. As a Bishop Barron fan I had to admire his desire for God's greater mercy to be at work, even as I squirmed with his addition of "fullness" to salvation. But your respectful response and more studied analysis of the whole of Lumen Gentium 16 clearly lays out the seemingly impossible possibility of salvation without explicit belief in Christ, and thus the urgent call of all of us to speak truth in love to every neighbor. And, by doing so, we answer what Lumen Gentium says in the following paragraph (17): "Through her (re: The Church) work, whatever good is in the minds and hearts of men, whatever good lies latent in the religious practices and cultures of diverse peoples, is not only saved from destruction but is also cleansed, raised up and perfected unto the glory of God..."

Thank you Father, for an excellent talk. To be fair to Bishop Barron, I haven't heard his sermon yet, but the other aspect that is so often misunderstood is that of 'conscience'. So many people think it is simply a matter of "I think", or worse still, "I feel", in other words simply a subjective judgment of the emotions, whereas in fact -- as I was taught at least -- it is the "moral judgment of the intellect". In other words, it should be an attempt to first of all objectively evaluate the morality of an action and then -- only then -- apply this obective standard to ourselves and our own concrete situation and actions. I would love to hear you talk about this aspect of the problem as well.

I love listening to Bishop Barron's sermons and I agree with your concern about people misinterpreting what he said. The Gospels are clear that not all will go to Heaven.... and Hell is real. Very cool video. It is an illustration of how the "development of doctrine" or the teaching of the deposit of faith ought to work: one proposes a response to a question; another says "yes, but wait what about this?"; a third clarifies, corrects, admonishes and praises all involved for desiring to do God's will with thier own good will. All benefit from the exchange.

I'm only at the 2 minute mark of this, and I find it exemplary. Much of my pandemic time was spent encountering Christians on UA-cam. From that experience, I discovered a new entry for the list of _There Are Two Kinds of _ dichotomies:
There are 2 kinds of Christians
    · The _Citadel Christian_ stands on the walls of their fortress and delivers epithets like rocks and arrows at those who are wander outside his/her walls of correctness
    · The _Walkabout Christian_ is a person at the bazaar, moving among the crowd, greeting and engaging with others. When he/she meets one who is mistaken on a point, they say, "That is interesting, friend. Let's discuss it further…."
Dr Martin is clearly the 2nd kind, an example for us all.

It's sometimes dead easy to intuit if someone is speaking from the heart, whether someone is sincere in speaking the 'Truth in Love'. Our wonderful brother, Dr Ralph, gives such a comprehensive answer. It was a Graceful answer, encouraging us to not be discouraged but to awaken the slumber within us. It was a a helpful and Hopeful message to Proclaim The Good News, being humbled by Christ's impactful words in Matt 7, but Hopeful of The Church and Her Saints. Thank you this more clear. Some times I find Bishop Barron over intellectualizes. This loses me sometimes.
