  • Ragnarok season 3 on Netflix has brought this tv show to an end. In this video, I go over the different Gods and their real Norse mythology and how it compares to the show. I also talked about the mythical battle of Ragnarok and the ending of the tv show. Also, sorry for some of my bad pronunciation of words!

I think the big reveal needed more flashbacks to conversations had, like the principal talking to the therapist.
You then realise she's just telling a friend what wild accusations Magne is making about her family.
Maybe Saxa never dated him, or maybe she did, either because she was slumming it, or to rebel against her mother.
Sixth Sense worked because it flashed back to certain scenes that reminded viewers of what came before, this show had three full seasons but the reveal was just a view brief screenshots.
It could have been great if they'd show scenes like the fight with the father, only him dying by heart attack, not by the axe.

The end of Ragnarok has been misunderstood. If you watch the last few episodes carefully, particularly the second last, you would realise that everything was not in Magne's head, everything did happen... however, at the end of the second last episode and as they decided to rewrite the myth, they created their own end, and as such a new world began/opened. In this new world there was peace and no longer need for war, no longer need for superheros and so the Gods were reduced to becoming normal humans again, and in order for their brains to normalize it had to then seem like a dream or fantasy, what you watched in the last episode was a transition where the world of Ragnarok dissolved and seemed to be just a dream, and in the normal world as we know it Magne would then be diagnosed as a schizophrenic. Then of course, there's at the same time a way to intepret it all as being a dream anyway from the start, but that doesn't make sense at all, since if you look back, much of the scenes occurred without even Magne being possibly aware of those events, but if you think that he imagined them then okay... I'm aware that the creators of the show attempted to make the interpretation simple by saying it was imagined as such, but this is only on one level of understanding it as a story of a boy who went through these difficult experiences in his life and started to have fantasies to cope with the pain. There is nothing wrong with that, it's also good, despite what the critics say... but, I tell you, this is not your typical American show to have one answer, in other parts of the world there are a lot of ambiguous narratives and this is where Ragnarok fits in. So, if you think about it that way, yes, everything did happen in the world of Ragnarok, but if you think of it in another way, then it was imagined. It depends how you look at it, whether you have faith in magic or not. Most won't believe it. In many stories with similar themes, not made for kids, you also have worlds ending and the protagonist going to the mental hospital when that world was made to change into a new form. Think of Tarkovsky's Sacrifice as the best example or even in popular movies, there's the recent, Joker where we question whether it was for real or in his head... Some the creator can choose one way to discuss or continue with a story, but if you look at the art itself, there is enough signs within it that the ambiguity is there... Watch the second last episode again, and you will notice that a choice is made for the world of Ragnarok to be set aside and to return to normalcy. In terms of the quality of the show, the final season wasn't as good as the other two... but not because of the end, it was because they were forced to squeeze much of the rest of the script into one final season and this resulted in the story being rushed, as it was... you can also notice that it wasn't gifted with the highest budget, and that's not the fault of the creators... they had to make do with what they got.

Also….how did Magne drag barrels filled with very heavy chemical waste to the police station. Someone killed Vidar? Who? What happened to Isolde, the experienced hang glider. Just way too many plot devices ignored….it so negated the wonder of the 1st two seasons that were about as brilliant as anything ever. A total drag.

I personally also don’t like the fact that they alluded to it being all in his head, but I think what the writers were going for is a bit more nuanced.
After thinking about it for an entire day because my brain obsessed over this ending, I came to the conclusion that it’s either 1) the worst ending of all time or
    2) that it was still true, but concluded in a way where only a metaphorical battle was necessary.
The reason I think it’s more of the latter is that a) how could any of the story have happened if Magne didn’t get the cadmium to the police department? b) how could magne have hallucinations of others’ character development?
You mean to tell me that he hallucinated an entire arc for Laurits? And the backstory for the Jutuls? Did he hallucinate Ran having the three way at the school dance?
And if it was a hallucination, why didn’t we get more clues as to that being the case? Those types of endings only work if it was built up all along and you can look back and be like “ahh, it was shown to me the whole time”
So my theory is that everything leading up did happen, and that the resolution they came to basically means that everyone disarms and essentially lives like humans.
Plus, for those in Edda who didn’t know about gods and giants, Magne did have schizophrenia, so it only makes sense for them to assume that’s what happened.
And so the battle of Ragnarok happened in a sort of “timeless time”, the same type of dark temporal space as many of the prophecy scenes are played in.
But even with that interpretation, I still felt a little cheated by the ending. I feel like, in an ideal world, they would have gotten a fourth season, with the third providing more necessary build up to the conclusion.

That could work. The battle took place in some relm of the Gods. Then the human and God world did some type of separation and the humans have now made peace. I would be find with that, but it's all about the set up. I don't feel like the show did the proper set up and foreshadowing for the ending.

I'm going with it did happen. War, anxiety, anger and hate can only go so far. It was time for peace. Thor/Magne made the decision to stop the war. Like Woden was trying to get through to him, Thor was a god agriculture and life. Not just death.
In the end with everyone sitting together like in the story The Taunting of Loki. But this time Loki isn't trying to start crap between the gods. He's living a different life. Actually living.
I think Norway is pretty inclusive give or take but I don't think all the characters would be sitting together. A former comatose old man in a scooter. A famous skier. A reality show celebrity. A former drunken bum. A fast food worker. Two children of Edda's wealthy elite.
It was now a time for peace. Until possibly the next time. When the wolf is present and Loki changes back. 🤷

Overall, it felt like the 3rd season, was abandoned by the scriptwriters of the 1st two excellent seasons. Season 3 was uneven, and it felt lazy, and I was completely disappointed. Not that I felt that the show had to confirm that the Norse gods and giants were part of the real world, but again, the ending felt lazy and uninspired. And the vast majority of the loyal viewers feel this way.

I agree, it like the writers for season 3 ruined it on purpose.

I am also very disappointed by the season finale. They had no prior scenes alluding to it. Especially since the show leaned so much on the Gods verse Giants aspect. Then at the end they are like. Ah gotcha just kidding it was all horse radish. Like what then why are they even having this little get together? They live in two different worlds. What the Jutul's are taking pity on him because their dad killed his friend? Also, if none of this happened then where is the dad? I don't know it is such a hard pill to swallow. Then what I wasted at least a year of my life on bullshit? It just such a disconnect. So, I might as well watch half of the first season then fast forward to the end of the last episode where he throws his comics out? It's funny people like to shit on Disney writing. You know next time I am going to point them to this show. See if they still keep the same tune. I love the show don't get me wrong that is why I am getting so passionate right now. Just such a sad excuse for an ending to such a great show. The absolute worst thing you can do has been done in my opinion.

The ending gets worse the more I think about it. Especially since there is pretty much zero foreshadowing.

unless of course it was all real... it wouldnt make sense to show the therapist scene right before the graduation. what if it was meant to show what could have been if he chose to fight like in the real ragnarok but he chose peace. in the begining of the last episode it says "thor has only nine steps left to step in this world". what if thor died but magne survived, this is also supported by the fact that vidar is not shown at the graduation meaning he probably is dead, he did not imagine that. i chose to believe that everything did happen but because he chose peace he saw what would have happend if he did not, he saw memories

@thomaspeeters8766 that makes sense and could work. I just wish it wasn't left up to interpretation. I feel like the vague ending kind of deflates the build up of the last three seasons.

I like your point about the writing, it’s like it hurts more if the show was good and then laid an egg for the final season. I personally think they really wanted one more season to do more build up or something. Or maybe they planned this shit show all along..

They did have prior scenes alluding to it. Right near the start they had him in a psyche evaluation. Season 1 episode 1 they had that meeting with the head of school saying he has an active imagination and known for violent outbursts etc...

I have a different, more optimistic interpretation of the ending. I believe that since the gods and giants decided not to fight, the essence of the gods and giants left their human hosts to live human lives, and reality just kind of rewrote itself to compensate that they've all lost their powers and memories. The final battle that took place in Magna's head was just him thinking about what might have happened or would have happened if they had fought to contrast with the happier ending that did take place. Of course, I'm basing this theory on a single idea... that Magna and his brother and all of the gods that came after were normal human beings who at different points were "possessed" by the essence of the gods they became. They were not innately or from birth or the reincarnation of these gods, and if they were possessed then they could be dispossessed, returning to their normal human state. It doesn't matter that it seems that the whole show was in Magna's head. That is just the what the gods wanted everyone to think.

I'd agree with you, except the guy who lost his arm waves his real hand (it wasn't lost) when they all sit down together.
Also, that would only make sense if the giants also lost their memories and became human.

Unpopular opinion: I loved the ending and to me it made the whole show better cause it gave more depth to it. I think its pretty genious how the last episode gave the audience a key that shows the proportion between the real world and magnes schizophrenic world. So I really enjoyed going through all the previous episodes and thinking about what may have happened in the "real" world. I think that they really made a good job with mixing real events with his traumatas, it makes all sense psychologically. The lines of the mother, that were funny all the time now turned into really heartbreaking evidence of a loving and caring mother who does everything for getting her son out of his schizophrenic episodes. Also, the ending really moved me because it was so bittersweet; bitter, because it turned out that mangne really was the "weak" child all the time, but also positive because he managed with the help of his "outcast" friends and family to stabilize himself so that he doesn't need his daylight hallucinations anymore. I also saw a lot of similarities/hints to donnie Darko, which is my favorite movie. sorry for my bad English.
