I just installed John’s stage 15 chip into my 1999 K1200LT. He now offers a conversion board so you can install it in the original ECU. I purchased another ECU from a 2002 and I can’t believe the torque it’s like a whole different bike. Thanks for your videos Kirk!

I got Jon's chip and let me explain my experience: I ordered based on this vid and the price. Contacted Jon and got it through ebay. Initial issue,.. wrong chip. Bike ran like crap. I have a 2003. I contacted Jon and he apologized and sent me not 1 but 2 othjer chips as it appears that the 2003 (mine) was a transition year so,.. two difference ECUs. Jon sent me 2 chips,. an a and a b. The a is what my bike need. I contacted him to return the other two chips (initial and the b chip sent). Jon simply asked for me to lte him know how the chip worked over time,.. performance, mileage etc.. and to give the other two chips to other people I may knowthat have a 2004 and above. Holy crap. I have NEVER had that level of integrity from a vendor on ebay. Jon is someone you WANT to deal with as he will, without a doubt resolve you issue. I know that an EEprom is cheap but really,.. others would want the chips back etc. If he sold other items,.. I would buy them.. he is THAT good a vendor. As far as my bike,.. the chip removed some of the stumbling that these pigs have and I cann find fault in anything. My gas mileage is slowly going up. I will report back as I sp[end mre time riding but to be honest,.. as stated here,.. feels like a really good tuneup at the moment and I, personally am happy.

I've had Johns Chip for over 50,000 miles now and it is still the best "tuning" mod that money can buy. Mine's in an R1100Rt
it's crisper everywhere, develops way more torque in the low to mid range and more power at the top end, Fuel consumption has improved from 48 to 52 mpg on average
I own a BMW
R1150RT twin spark from 2003.
After
replacing the cam chain tensioner on the left cylinder for the modified type.
Adjusting the valve clearance and replace sparkplugs, air, oil filter and fuel
filter and oil. Synchronising the throttle
body’s. I replaced the ECU eprom from John Gemi’s stage 8 version.
A total new
BMW R1150RT appeared.
You cannot imagine
what a difference this tune up has made.
The bike is
unrecognisable.

totally new BMW bike

Hey Kirk and anyone who has this chip on their bike. I bought mine last year and ever since I've noticed a pretty severe stumble when the engine is cold and I'm crusing at steady speed. Bike is a K1200RS with a Remus system, Bmc filters and Gemi stage 6 chip for 93 octane. I've tried two different oxygen sensors on the bike and still the same thing, pretty bad stumble while crusing. Once the coolant temperature gets up to warm, bike runs awesome. It's never done that in the 7 years I've had it until the chip came along. I wanted to regain some of that lost low end power from the Remus.
I appreciate the videos, but as a computer engineer I think you forgot about ESD (electro static discharge). When handling the CPU chip, please do not take it with the pin between your fingers.
Apart from that, thanks for the very instructive videos.I was also curious about the performance chip, but read that on such heavy bikes it;s not really worth it.
Nice clip! One important remark: go and get antistatick gloves for electronic job! They are cheap, easy to buy, but can save your butt. Do not operate chips with naked hands - easy to kill it with electrostatic energy!
I have read nothing but good reports from forums in the UK, Europe and Nth America. Definitely on my shopping list for as soon as I have finished my present Cafe Racer project and can make space on the lifter for the K1200RS. Thanks for your review.
just took my 05 k12lt on a 400mile trip yesterday...and just changed out the O2...and everybody was laughing at the smoke i was blowing on the passing...i will give it a try

CRAZY PROBLEM -maybe you JOHN have answer ! ... the Speedo jumps up/down or goes to 0 for a bit OVER 48mph - ok below that speed ?! - and now the ELECTRIC CENTER STAND is also erratic - works when it wants to - no fluid leaks - only 25k miles - I get the flashing yellow light and blinking idiot light on dash with downward lightning bolt .. ideas ? bike runs GREAT -could it be a fuse? it was painted so they took off faring - maybe a connection ? -I check the battery cables -all tight - pushed in all the fuses - are the stand and speedo on same bus fuseline ? your ideas - help APPRECIATED ;-) - I LOVE YOUR REVIEWS JOHN - BEEN WATCHING THEM FOR YEARS ! - INFORMATIVE - ENTERTAINING - LEARNING A LOT ; )
What's crazy is that you think my name is John! I am Kirk. The speedo sensor may be dirty or misaligned. Check that first. The ECHS has a bunch of safetys. The side stand must be up. the bike must be in neutral, the brakes must not be on. Start there

FIXED ! Pavel Hinke was RIGHT ! hug you tight and toast YOU with a beer Happy Happppppy Happpppy bike rider .. it was the REAR ABS Sensor on the back brake unit .. I simply tapped it a few times on both sides of the tire - wiggled it with my fingers - and PRESTO it worked normal fine - Center Stand working fine (as I had the front brake on -dummy) ,, all is fine in the Kingdom - I THANK EVERYONE who tried to help .. so if your speedo starts dropping to 0 - check the rear sensor - it worked for meeeeeeee - Blessings RIDE SAFE -- - - -ps- - - I DID disconnect the battery to re-set computer and charged the battery (but it didn't need it).. and NOTE: the sensor having dust on it internally - could mean I need to LUBRICATE the REAR DRIVE SHAFT -- FYI
great videos, very helpful. I have a question; I have a beep about every thirty seconds coming from my 2005 k1200lt. this started after I laided the bike over onto its left side in my garage. The bike does not have an alarm system, I pulled trunk off and checked. I have the battery unhooked now for a month due to some health issues, but she is still beeping.

Hello Harry from Holland. I orderd one and placed today. I had a box started with 145. John anticepedet and sent a adapter! Next week trip to Luxembourg, hope it improves!

I've ordered a chip from John a month and a half ago. I still haven't seen it in my hand.
I've contacted him twice and he's always been saying I'll send you next week.
To bad that it came out like that.
I ordered a chip in June, just got it yesterday. John had some health issues and got really backed up this spring/summer but he's finally catching up. Wish it had arrived before the cold snap but hopefully I'll get some more good weather yet this year.

Ha ha...take it to the dealer - good one! We are here watching your fantastic videos Kirk so we can work on the bikes ourselves. Another great video. Did you notice if the torque curve is evened out some? I do experience just like you say when I get over 3500 RPM and then a drop off about 6500.
The torque curve is a lot better for sure! Try one out!
I watched your O2 sensor replacement video and was thinking about trying that to increase mileage but I doubt that is my issue. Have an '05 that gets low 40 MPG unloaded and one up but runs fine. Sounds like the chip may be what I am looking for.

So, question for you. I'm looking for my first bike. I'm 6', about 250 pounds, a lot of it fat, and I am looking for a bike to commute to work on (35 miles or so each way), and to do a bit of touring on.
When I started out, everyone said buy a Yamaha FJR 1300. I had three different people telling me that. Yeah, okay.
I found a 2006 BMW K1200GT, which I would really like to have, but it costs more than what I really want to spend. It has 28,000 miles on it. Another dealer has a 2004 K1200LT Standard, for $5,000 and it has less than 20,000 miles on it.
Given what you know about these bikes, and yes, I know the LT is a 900 pound monster that handles very well once you get it going, which of these would you recommend for me? If neither, that's fine, too.

When it hits 100k Im ripping it down and rebuilding the motor. Maybe at that time will pop one in..
Kirk, I have watched a few of your K1200LT videos. Top heavy, plain heavy, black smoke on passing, wears tires quickly, rear main seal leaks which ruins clutch, clutch slave cylinder leaks which ruins the clutch, needs computer chip upgrade, rear drive failures, dry clutch which has chatter problems, poor headlight lighting ability, and other things. Why, why, why would I want to buy a used one of these? I could get a 2002 BMW K1200LT with 19,000 for $2000. I could get a 2000 Goldwing 1500 with 130,000 miles for $3000. I chose the Goldwing after watching your videos. I think I made the right choice. Why would I want an inferior designed bike for any money? It seems the K1200LT is an inferior design where you can't change the design only constantly work of fixing the flaws. I owned a K1200RS and sold it because of all the K bike main seal, clutch slave cylinder seal and rear drive problems. I bought a 2007 K1200R Sport. Great Japanese designed bike!
Nice review of the chip. I will look into this as more mileage and elimination of the WOT black smoke would be worth it.
I did cringe watching you handle those chips. You should try to avoid touching the leads with anything, particularly anything not properly grounded to eliminate static charge.
My only concern is losing detonation margin. My bike will occasionally ping in hot weather if I get any fuel less than 91 octane .... as I had to in Newfoundland when one station had only 86 octane. I will check John's web site as he likely addresses this.

1.00 - 1.10 toss that thing away. You had likely fried its sensitive parts. Anyone that knows a little bit about electronic sensitive electrostatic current can see why I wrote this

They really are not that sensitive. Besides, I am not going back into my bike and removing it after this many years of using it just fine. It is still working well to this day and I have installed quite a few of them without incident. Thanks for your concern though!

Kirk. for the 99 -2000 LT crowd, you mentioned Bosch computer must start with a "7" in order to install the chip? Where did you get your replacement "board" at and how much?
I got mine off ebay for about $40.
Prices on these things range from $60 - $600 on eBay... $100 seems to be about the going rate.
I have a 1996 R1100RS, and just received John's chip yesterday. I included the full VIN but in re-watching this video I am concerned with the 1 / 7 code on the Motronic unit since I didn't check ahead of time. Do you think it applies to the RS?
I am not sure on a 96 but there is two ways to find out! Write to John or put it in and see how it runs.
What stage chip did you put in your k1200lt? I have an '03 that is stock. Would love more overall power as well as to smooth out low-end torque and acceleration.

Really enjoy your videos. Very informative and produced. Curious about your opinion. I have a 02 RS with 2 bros full exhaust and a k&n exhaust. Also running the Rhinewest chip which I found to be a definite improvement over stock. With said mods I found a 14 hp gain on the dyno. Question: Is this chip better than the Rhinewest? I DO like the idea of a higher rpm limit. On the dyno my hp curve was linear and DID NOT drop at engine limit leading me to believe that it would continue to increase to the new higher limit afforded by this chip. I wonder if they make the same power other wise. Power gains maybe more noticible on my bike because of the lesser weight. What is your opinion?
I think the gains would be marginal but best to ask John yourself on this one.
I suspect you are right except for the higher redline (which is rarely used anyway). Do you know of anyone who has used the Rhinewest besides me? Were they happy? Thanks for the response.

Hope i am not the first one to tell you. ESD strap must be worn and get you grounded before you open the critical electronics. Even if appears not to had been damaged, chances are you already did damage the chip when you talked about how to pronounce his name. IMHO and based on basic electronics class in 1980 in Spain.

Tax2Me you know I from China the most developed city called Shenzhen which is famous for HUAWEI and DJI drone . Unfortunately riding bike is forbidden. I have been pulled over several times by cops . I every single time when I got pulled I will got a around 250USD fine bill for riding bike in the downtown and my driving credit score will be deducted 3 points from totally 12 points yearly. We motor fans have to pay much more higher price for the same BMW model. For example we pay 30000USD for the 1250GS basic version , 3000USD for the tax,1200USD for the first year, insurance , 800USD for the getting driving plate (due to local regulations bike is not allow to registered so it have to be towed to anther province for registration. It’s funny humm). Totally sum up to 35000USD for basic 1250GS. I hate the government we are not the citizens we are just their belongings . Many factories here bankrupt , CPI raised 6% , capital fleet out of China dramatically , eatmated un employment is about 10%,house price extremely expensive where I live the average is 10000USD per square meter . What can we do ?

Just installed last night after I bought it in December 2017. Does it take some time to take in new parameters? The idle is erratic, and seems is almost at the point of stalling. When I pull the handlebar to the left, the bike revs up. When I pull it to the right, it almost dies. It wasn't doing that before. The weather here is always hot (32C or 90F) and humid (over 80%).
It sounds like you have the wrong chip, Contact John via FB and get the right one
Kirk, for some reason he actually sent me two chips. One was labeled K1200LT STG# (8 I think) and another one labeled R1150RT STG8. Obviously I installed the one labeled K1200LT. I'll reach out to him. Thanks!
All good now. I had the throttle cable too tightly adjusted on the slack. Reset the TPS. It was not behaving yesterday, but this morning it's all good. Who knows? It's a BMW.
How many gain of horse power you can have on a lt?
I did not dyno it to find out. It does increase responsiveness a lot

I really liked the bike, I fell in love with it after I saw it and sat on it! I wanted a honda gold wing, but still a bmw. Now I am studying materials on maintenance and repair, one problem in English I am not selenium. Thank you for your comments! The last time I sat on a motorcycle Ural about 30 years ago, and here I am again in the saddle! I have a lot to learn from you, but my English doesn't allow me to do that.

I have been enjoying your videos, I recently got a 2005 k1200lt 32000 mile, brakes, disc, fuel and air filter.... the bike runs good, but the chip is a small investment. I have tried for 2 days and still haven’t been able to find how to order one. I am limited with the computer but am trying and I don’t give up, I always am willing to accept help when I dont know what I’m doing. Anyone? Please help me. Thank_you

Great vid but you need to ground yourself when you open the brain box, you could of cooked the entire board. I'm glad it worked out.
