China has always been substandard garbage during my lifetime. If you want to buy something and you can't tell where it was made? China.
If it's made in the USA it will say so in rather large letters with an American flag. This is what people want to buy. China hides their label whenever possible.

That was the reputation Japanese products had as late as the Sixties of last Century. Then, some 10 years later, everybody and his wife wanted one of these reliable, no-nonsense Japanese cars!
Chinese-made artifacts once had a reputation for exquisite perfection, which you can see for yourself in any reputable museum. Objects crafted by Chinese hands are still pretty amazing, even if they are, nowadays, labeled "made in Taiwan". Or Vietnam...

      Made out of Chinesium.
China has no driving force to produce quality products. Their own people buy "nail houses". Everything is made as cheaply as possible.
I remember back in the 80's some guy bought a pack of hacksaw blades. Made in China. That was unusual back then. The teeth mangled immediately. They were made out of aluminum instead of alloy steel. You could bend them in half and they wouldn't snap. They looked real but were trashed instantly. Never cut through one bolt.

But the big difference is not cultural, it was totally economic. Japan adapted to a capitalistic system which depends on selling to make a profit. It if doesn't work, it won't sell, and you will fail. In a communist system, it doesn't matter if it works or not, you still got a job making useless items. Communism is really a failed society system. It's unnatural.@@DanielLLevy

My own experience is with heavy steelmaking equipment:coke ovens, blast furnaces, heavy rolling mills etc. These were set up at the same time as German and British equipment( those days the Americans did not export to India). The Russian equipment was heavy, rigged,(probably overdesigned) and outperformed its competitors over the years. In the field of Defence, fly by wire for fighter jets was first implemented by USSR,the others followed suit. The first space craft were Russian, as was the first astronaut.MIG 21 when first bought in the 1960s were fully as good as anything the Americans made. The Russians started off well; it's just that they couldn't last the course and fell back.

It surprises me that there are so many comments about Faulty Chinese goods. If you buy at the two dollar shop you can’t expect quality goods. Every household has goods made in China. I have a chinese tv about 10 years old and a fridge about 7 years old. Two thirds of Chinese goods are made for American and European companies. The quality control is the responsibility of the company not the workers. If the company has a policy of making quality goods then the those goods will be good quality and conversely the opposite. The fridge and Tv I have were made in China but weren’t Chinese companies. These companies have high standards so even though made in China are good quality. I am afraid people are too ready to blame China for everything. Bangladesh, Indian, and Pakistani goods haven’t a good reputation but you don’t see the vitriol laid at those places

When practically all the industries are in one way or another owned by the ruling party, then you have to expect that they will not want to embarrass themselves, hence the quality and worker safety measures and the consumer protections that should all be in place are only loosely monitored so as not to find too many faults. This leads to officials' corruptions and coverups where even the ordinary citizens who suffer the consequences can be put in jail for speaking out or being critical of the ruling party!

one funny story is that finland got 64 f35s at a big discount in 2021, size of f35 fleet not many country in the world has outside usa, despite not being in nato, despite not being tier 1 or any tier developer partner for usa, because usa wanted to sell finland something to use against russians. and other tier developer partners, who should've gotten things cheaper because they are tier developer partners and in nato, etc. had to pay far more than finland per f35, and some of them got miffed about that.
like Canada got them 215 million a piece, despite being a tier 3 partner and being in nato, and finland got them 131 a piece, despite not being in nato at the time or a tier developer partner.
and the finnish contract includes local finnish industrial participation as a bonus, with industrial offsets valued at 30 percent or more of the contract, it includes engines, maintenance equipment, spare parts, training equipment, and service. and got the latest upgraded missile variants for it, like the AMRAAM missile family and stealth JASSM.
pretty good for a country population half the size of new york, and with a total defense budget of around 4 billion euros.
*another good one is the story about how finland got 200 leopard a4 and a6 tanks from the Netherlands and Germany also at a great discount - both countries' leftist government parties wanted to get rid of their tanks, because they believed normal wars no longer happened.

Most military equipment is low volume production so flaws and errors are harder to weed out. Australia bought 2 helicopter carriers from Spain, they have spend more time in repair and maintenance than deployment.

Certainly not an excuse for the J-7s. Over 2000 of those have been built, not counting any lessons learned from the Soviets on the MiG-21 before the design was licensed.

Huh? They were half built in Australia, and the designs had to be converted to NATO standards in the Williamstown dockyards. It was a lot of work. I built the software for the certification system. Nothing to do with Spanish quality.
