  • Hi, In this video I choose a cold day in April to answer the question: can a mid handicap play blade irons. hopefully this could improve my ball striking and produce better scores, and if not a least they look really cool ;-) enjoy the video!

    “Because I really like them” that’s the only rationale that matters, we play this game to enjoy it… so play whatever equipment brings your joy

    Played blades from when I was 17 HC 3 years ago, until now and off 10. Knocking the door in medals breaking 80, and it's because of the blades. Distance control is so much better, and modern blades like the Wilson Staff model I play, are really forgiving for what they are.

      This is great to hear, and I think this is the route I'm going down, going to stick with them 👍 I love a set of wilson blades as well 😀

    I really enjoyed the video, and your attitude regarding the way you look at the game and equipment. I share your view and enjoy playing clubs that would not be anywhere near being recommended for my skill level. I may shoot in the low 80's but, what keeps bringing me back is the 8 or 10 shots that are hit flush with the clubs I enjoy using. Stay with them and enjoy the process no matter what anyone has to say !

    Got my dream set of Miura KM700 blades. First time out was pretty rough but I'm not going pro so I will give it a few more tries.

    I still play Nike pro combo 8,9,p all bladed I agree about chipping the flat narrow soles are ideal for little bump and runs.
    The ability to flight them higher or lower and all the common things that get said such as workability are true.
    I’ve tried various different types of blades over the years and when you’re swinging well and finding the middle of the face there isn’t a better feeling but now to the big negative.
    Off center strikes get punished massively can have 15 yards fall off in distance easily with an 8 iron that’s sometimes enough to find the trap or miss the green.
    At the end of the day if someone has their heart set on a set of blades go buy them don’t let anyone tell you they’re not for you.
    My golf is nothing special I’ve played off 5-6 for quite a long time ball striking is my strength though those irons have been in my bag for 14 years I think in that time I’d say iron play is my strength.
    I will be changing in the near future to something with a lighter and possibly slightly softer shaft and may just choose a different design of iron but I am 42 and don’t play as often as I once did not because I don’t love a blade.
    The lofts are generally standard so technically you’re probably not actually losing distance.

    I brought my late 1970’s blades to a Titleist testing center for a laugh to see what they thought. These guys were all college or mini tour players, so I gave them my 4 iron. They all struggled and started laughing their butts off. One put himself on the trackman and said he was 20 yards shorter than his current forged blade 4 iron. Great time

      I highly doubt that. Blades are blades - regardless of age. There is no "technology" involved.

    Gaming the previous P7MB since Jan ‘21 and LOVE THEM. My ball striking currently is just insane. 4-PW KBS 120S and compression is key.
    You’ll start gaining yardage quickly.

    I’d say that you could play those. You hit them really well. I have a few sets of blades I play from time to time because I love the look and feel. I usually get around the course pretty well. There are some days when I’m playing with my regular cavity backs and think thank god I’m not playing with the blades today. That said, I feel like having the blades forces me to rise to the occasion, focus and hit it better. They don’t make me play better, but probably about the same. I realistically lose most strokes on putting anyhow…I often think: should I play blades? Probably not. Can I? Sure, why not? I’m not going on tour.

    I believe you hit the nail on the head. Less forgiving clubs make you focus more and try harder, I think. I recently changed to a forged combo set and I love it

    Great video, mate. I asked myself the same question at the end of last season and switched to P7MCs from GI irons. It took a little adjustment to get used to them but I'm striking the ball better and scoring lower than I ever have. I don't know if it's the mentality or the clubs but I'm glad I made the change.

    I play P790s and enjoy them. I have a friend that is a PGA professional and plays the P7mbs and he lets me hit them from time to time. I’m a 13HCP but I generally can hit these irons. The issue is always on those three or four inevitable bad strikes that I get during a round when hitting the irons. That is why muscle backs just aren’t right for me. When striking well they are great but I need a bit of forgiveness for the 10% of the time I don’t.

    • @MidHandicapGolf
      @MidHandicapGolf  Місяць тому +1

      Yes it's very true, over 18 holes I would fully expect that I would get 2 bad strikes and the ball just doesn't travel anywhere if you miss hit them 👍

      @@MidHandicapGolf I was surprised, after hitting them, that the irons are only about 5 yards or so shorter than my P790s. I have a set of PTx Pro irons that I used to play and the p790s were significantly longer. So TM did a good job on those irons.

    Iron forgiveness is mostly marketing mumbo jumbo. Play irons that fit your game and that you feel comfortable with.

  • @ClassicGolfClubs
    @ClassicGolfClubs Місяць тому +1

    Everybody should play blades, they're not that different to GI clubs and the pleasure you get from having them in the bag more than offsets any slight loss of forgiveness.
    Loss if distance is a mind-set, it doesn't matter what number is written on the bottom, it's knowing how far that club will go. In my ideal world a 3 iron should be 24° and everything else in 4° steps down to a 52° PW and 56° SW.
    I choose all my iron sets primarily on their looks, yes, I'm a shallow individual. But if you go back in time there are hundreds of stunning sets of irons to find.

    • @MidHandicapGolf
      @MidHandicapGolf  Місяць тому +1

      That's so true, I pretty much get all my clubs based on looks as well, and with blades I actually lose very few balls it feels much more under control 🙌

    What is your handicap? You have a good swing and youre shots are good. We are putt brothers however! If i could make a 6-8' putt I'd be decent. I feel like I'm a decent golfer now at a 5.9 handicap. However, you look more consistent than myself.

      Thank you, yep my putting is definitely my biggest issue and like you if I put well I will score well. Believe it or not, I'm currently a 15 handicap 😮but I do get called a bandit a lot. I'm hoping to enter a lot more comps this year and my handicap should drop. When I was younger, I played off 6 so I think the swing and tempo probably comes from that. Thanks for watching 👍
