【Fong's Roll is the Non-Hip-Snap kayak roll, that enables people with lower limb disabilities to roll a capsized kayak with their hands】
This is the 3rd video of the Fong's series, for sharing my teaching experience in an innovative skill (Fong's Roll) with coaches, who are interested in teaching kayaking to the people with disabilities.
When capsizing, without any external rescue, it would be helpful if you could do a kayak roll. Rolling is a self-rescue technique, through lower limbs to Hip Snap & rotate a capsized kayak. However, for people with lower limb disabilities, it was technically impossible in Kayak Rolls.
Fong's Roll is an innovative kayak skill, using hands instead of feet to right a kayak (probably a breakthrough in the kayaking skills). Fong's Roll was developed in 2001 by Coach Alex W.K. FONG (Level 3 coach from Hong Kong Canoe Union, coach no. KL3-023)(recently reshot). The Feature of Fong's Roll is that without any help from attaching devices, the upper extremity movement substitutes for rolling knee (hip flick) in tradition rolls as a source of rotational force to right a capsized kayak. Hopefully, this technical breakthrough may further expand an inclusive environment to people with physical disability in kayaking.
**This skill is applicable in HK sea condition. For safety's sake, it is recommended being trained by a qualified instructor/ coach to get the best training effect & to reduce the risk of injuries.

Excellent. Definitely like the hand grab near the front of the gunwale (rather than at the side) that encourages the forward lean that is so important for keeping the head low as it comes out of the water.
Thanks for your support on this skill & inclusive kayaking.
This is awesome 😎
Thank you 😊
終於完成了方氏系列的3部影片。可以完成這3部影片,要多謝好多人,包括:
1) 幫忙拍攝的各位同學;
2) 以往教過我的教練,令我獲得獨木舟技術和知識;
3) 我以往教過的學員,擴闊了我的教學經驗;
4) 22年前(2001),與Francis遇上,令我反思傳統技術 和 開始著手研發一些新的技術。
之後,會再與大家分享其他主題的影片。到時再見!
A side thought for able bodied folks - try with an over large/wide boat in which the hip support is lacking, the foot rest too far away (non-supportive), and don't engage the knee/thigh into the thigh braces; Now you too are disconnected from the boat in the lower limbs and should be able to get a feel for what needs to happen and how it works.
I'll try it on one of the large club boats. Should be enlightening!
Thanks for your inputs
Congratulations for spending the time to work this out and making kayaking accessible to all.
Thanks for your support on this skill & inclusive kayaking.
Thanks for your video. Will try your solution today
Happy to hear that you will try it out.
謝謝分享
Amazing techni, thanks for sharing!
