  • In this video I show how I built a hydraulic thumb for my John Deere 310SG backhoe which I used for clearing trees for my cabin as well as for loading roots and rocks into a dump trailer. Unfortunately, after 30 minutes of using the first version I broke it and had to rebuild it.

Very nicely engineered and built. I am contemplating making vs buying a thumb from my backhoe. It will not be hydraulic so the build will be much simpler. Thank you for sharing!

You should really try to match the size of the cylinder and cylinder rod to the one that is on the bucket so they work together ok. If it’s smaller you will always be able to over power it and bend it

Thanks for sharing! That is a lot of work to get to this point! I take good note of the wrought iron. A thumb seems simple at first view, but the angles, distance, etc. are critical. I always wondered about the opposed hydraulic cylinders. I mean the curl and the thumb. At some point, they might work against each other. Is there any release valve, let's say on the thumb?

Hi Joe, yes, it was a lot of work. I tied the thumb hydraulics into the same circuit as the extend-a-hoe boom, so any excessive pressure will be relieved through the extend-a-hoe pressure relief valve. Thanks for watching!

THX Fore sharing this method to create a "thumb" i have benen wondering to use the same method to create a woodmodel as you have done. I have benen "looking around" and finaly found your video. And this video have get me inspiration to start making a thumb. In Sweden where i live its not very common to have a thumb om your excavator.
So again great job and BIG Thanks

Beautiful job! Your methodical approach was inspiring. You are very talented. Thanks for sharing your video. I have an excavator that I would like to have a thumb installed. Unfortunately I’ll have to pay someone to do the install.

Hello Mr. Chris. Is there anyway you can share the plans for this build?

I don't really have any more info other than what is in the video. What were you looking for specifically?

@@ChrisOfAllTrades just wondering if you had a draft of the dimensions I am looking to make a retractable fixed thumb for my 310sg.

No, unfortunately I don't, and I sold the machine about a year ago or else I could go measure it.

@Chris Of All Trades did you consider tapping into a outrigger cylinder to provide hydraulic for thumb?

@@ChrisOfAllTrades also you said you just used a "t". Did you consider using a diverter valve?
