  • DIY Backhoe Thumb part 1 (scrap metal build)
Finally getting around to building a thumb for my John Deere 410 Backhoe!
Like everything I build this is strictly built out of random scrap metal and misc junk I have laying around.
Be sure to stick around for part 2 when I set up the hydraulics.

Still need to weld it up solid, get it trimmed up and do a little reinforcing but we are off to a good start!

This is a great project and thanks for showing all the steps you have taken so far. It will be interesting to see how the hydraulics work out

I am considering purchasing this exact backhoe, but i'm just concerned about hauling it. I've transported mini excavators before, but this thing is beastly compared to them.

Yes this machine is a lot to haul!
Loading can get pretty scary, I recommend backing it on cause it likes to ride wheelies with all that weight on the back.
I loaded it on my 24' dovetail triple axle fifth wheel trailer.
We got it all chained down but forgot a 4x4 wheel chock on the middle trailer axle.
Somehow the trailer drove over the 4x4 snapping the springs on the middle axle.
We ended up unloading and driving the backhoe home 20 miles.
It was a long drive with hydraulic cylinders that settle lol.
      Good luck and be careful!
And just remember, make sure you pick up all your wheel chocks before you drive off!
