- The is a video of Fred Folger (Toledo, Ohio Historian) telling of the history behind the much loved Tiedtkes Department Store on Summit Street in Toledo. At the end Fred shows what the same location looks like today.
I love this so much my grandma and my dad used to take me there!

Thank you for this. My very first picture taken with Santa was at Tiedtkes. Still have it too. Loved going there as a child. Shopping today will never be the same as back then.
My mother worked in the “boys department “ from the late 50s until they closed. I can remember from time to time taking the bus after school to go to the store and wait for my mother off work and ride home with her.
Mr. Folger was my favorite history teacher while I was in the Whitmer district. I also worked with my family at Markay Shoes next door to Tiedtkes. Loved that store!!!
I went to whitmer in the 90s I think he was my teacher.
I used to shop at this store years and years ago. It was a real loss when it went, from then on Toledo went down hill, especially the downtown area.
This was my great Grandfather's store until the Kobacker's bought it.
TIEDKES WAS A BIG PART OF MY LIFE IN THE 50'S AND SIXTIES
Kobackers was furniture store on Summit St. down the road from Tiedkes. Across the street from Tiedke's was Tiedke's Annex whuch I think sold furniture. I liked the lunch counter on the first floor.
Tiedtke's is where I met the first love of my life almost 50 years ago (I'm 55 now) -- jelly donuts! My parents would take us shopping at Tiedtke's when I was very young - before kindergarten age. And we would always make a stop by the bakery to pick up a dozen jelly donuts. I think my dad's proudest day was when a had a whole dollar I could spend anywhere in the store - and I ran to the bakery counter! And I remember those funhouse mirrors - over by the elevators, where you could also purchase a big shopping bag for a nickel. Unfortunately, Tiedtke's closed when I was in first or second grade. There was at least 1 satellite Tiedtke's bakery store at the shopping center on Suder Ave. in the Shoreland area, but I don't remember if that existed after the downtown store closed or not.
Fred Folger was the best American history teacher Toledo has ever seen.
It was the first super store where you could buy anything you wanted, they had it all.

I worked at here from 1956 - 1958 in the produce dept part, after school and Saturdays. My job was to put the perishables into a cooler in the basement via elevator. Saturday, brought the produce up via elevator. Or, unload rai cars of bagged sugar, sacks of nuts, cases of dates, etc.. All by hand and hand jacks. Great experience!!
I remember the golden lions on the sidewalk outside of Lion Store.

Growing up in Toledo in the 1940's and 50's, I remember a lot. My uncle worked at
Tiedtkes until he retired. I remember hearing about Marvin Kobacher way back then.
If I am right, Oostermann's Jewelers was on the corner. That's where I bought my
first (deceased) wife's wedding and engagement rings back in 1963.
Top floor, toys....88 cents....will never forget.
This guys preaching to the choir, there all shoppers from there. They could probably tell him more about it then he knows.
