In general it goes by pixels, so LOD100 will be approximately 100 pixels on your screen, when that 100 pixels hits the next number down it propts FSX to display the next LOD of the model. My models are created using a general size of 720p so I'm actually creating LODs at 75% of the intended size as I normally run FSX in 1080p
