Bionicle is a special kind of addiction, right?
Yes
Tell me about it! I have bought the 2001 Toa, Turaga and Tohunga and the 2002 Bohrok-Va during COVID. I used to love Bionicle as a kid (I started getting Bionicles during the Inika/Piraka era). I gave all my bionicles away when I became a teenager, but I have always wanted the earliest Bionicle, 2001 and 2002 period.
@@BigBen444 save some money for the titans, they're perfection
@@TormaTOS I won't have space for those hahaha xD!
@@BigBen444 that sucks dude
They're so simple, but so cool. I loved their color palettes. You'd never get a Happy Meal toy as legit as these little friends nowadays!
The discs weren't new molds they were used in Slizer/Throwbots in 1999. But the prints are new for 2001.
I had throwbots as a kid, but got them confused with old bionicles cos of a lack of brand loyalty 😂😂😭
I remember having Onipu as a kid, and being absolutely devastated when I lost him and couldn't find it after hours of searching. Got it as an adult for the sake of nostalgia 😁
Damnit why is Lime and Teal such a satisfying color combo to look at
ikr, having a collection of all the Le-matoran from MNOG would be so cool
@@breenotcheese746 YESSSSS.
'Cause they're both amazing colors
It sucks that Teal is a discontinued color
@@574guy It's been brought back. Sadly the same can't be said for Bionicle itself. 🥲
Also find it a bit unfortunate that Kongu was the only set with this color scheme, but at least it makes him unique.
Honestly this is a really good McDonalds toy, it’s just a really small lego set which you can expand if you have Lego at home instead of a plastic toy that just does sounds.
You would never see something like this nowadays
I cant believe that I was today years old when I found out that you could mount the disks to the back of their heads
It's times like these that makes me happy to look at my completed Bionicle Collected that I gathered while the serie was still ongoing :D
You can still collect them. I had 64 of them and in 2018 i discovered Bricklink. My set number ran up to 177. 🤣
I grew up with these but Im also half polynesian. The word tohunga actually means expert Maori, the Hawaiian equivalent is actually Kahuna, as in "Big Kahuna". Tohunga status was normally given to elders who were experts in their craft and often held high status. After the lawsuit the name was changed to avoid misuse the meaning, it would be like calling these villagers nobles. ( I personally think it would have been a good name for the Turaga if they had done their research) The ng is actually a soft g in Maori to pronounce it right.
It was really cool getting these toys as a kid as I knew the words and their meanings and it felt like the people and I know and love were getting some real attention other than being a misrepresented tourist destination. I loved legos and my culture so it made my childhood great and great for others. Thank you for the videos, I think Im going to pull out my box of bionic parts now. Cheers!
I had no idea that they could mount the discs to their back like that. All this time....As a kid, I never knew
The nostalgia from seeing the pictures on that instruction leaflet hit me like a brick
I remember the day I successfully begged my mom to take us to McDonald's so I could get one of these. It was 9/11/2001. 9/11 had just happened but I just had to get my mctoran.
I love the little Mctoran
This where the best & only McDonalds Happy Meal Toys, I ever loved getting from McDonalds lol!!
It's ironic as when I was in middle school , there was a nearby store that for that week, sold bionicle and one of the sets they sold was Hahli. I was given pocket money to buy some sweets (which everyone else did) but I loved lego more and bought hahli and everyone thought I was mad.
After that week the sets were swapped for Metru Nui sets (the matoran for that series) to which I bought 1 of each, except the one that betrayed them (another ironic thing huh?).
To this day I still owned Hahli and considered I never had a matoran before her and I wanted Gali and was too late to get her back when mata was around; it's a nice reminder that sometimes opportunities pass us by. We can either let them past and wish we did better, or take them and risk the chances.
A lesson I've kept with me to this day and beyond.
Nothing about this story was ironic
@@toamatau8785 It's ironic that the first bionicle I got was not only one they never released before, but I never saw in the shelves after that day.
It's also ironic since it was bought with money to buy sweets which my friend did buy, but once that's gone it's gone. With Bionicle and Lego; it's there for as long as you want ^^
It's also ironic that Hahli was my fave character in Bionicle and usually I don't ever get that lucky. Usually I get the guy that everyone forgets :)
@@lPsychoMax again, none of those are ironic. There are several kinds of irony but the most common is when the opposite of what you would expect happens when you do something.
"I bought a lego set and I never saw it on the shelves afterwards" is not ironic whatsoever. Having a favorite character is not ironic. Buying something with your money is not ironic.
@@toamatau8785 Getting something that was unique when you usually get stuff that's usually common isn't ironic.
Getting something to keep while other spend their money on something they won't get to keep after the bought it, but being considered a waste of money isn't ironic.
Talking about the subject of what ironic is as if it's a big issue to themselves, while ignoring the fact of what is actual irony while having a bionicle name and profile picture; as if that fans definition of irony isn't the same as their definition of ironic isn't irony.
Or, maybe it is irony and you only read the stuff you didn't agree?
@@lPsychoMax Are you sure you didnt’t buy the 2003 Hahli figure? That one was definitely released. She is in her Rebuilt form. Plus if it was like 2003 or early 2004 Metru Nui’s story arc would’ve been just around the corner LOL. Makes perfect sense.
I have every 2001 Toa, but I've always wanted these. They were never released in Mcdonalds in Britain so they are ludicrously expensive over here.
I always wondered why I could never find them, I was a kid at the time and was never able
@@ninjaboyjoel9183 yeah, I've been looking for them since I was young, most recently the cheapest I saw these go for is 150 dollars for a complete set in used condition. Definitley still out of my price range for happy meal toy. 14:18 kills me everytime I hear it.
@@James_Lo I got them for about that, and the guy sent them in the original bags I believe. Unsealed though.
As often as I went to McDonald's as a kid, somehow I missed out on the McDonald's Bionicle toys... I'm just now finding out about them as a collector. I would've loved these. I remember the 2001 robot dogs, though.
The Matoran of this era were so easy that I'm honestly surprised that they never made a "villager pack" with the materials to build a handful of different Matoran from different villages using the full range of their respective color pallets. I know they wouldn't have in 2001, but 2002 had the release of Nuparu with the Boxor, so that would have been a good chance to make Villager Packs.
Oh my god I remember calling different McDonalds with my mom to ask if they had the teal Lewa. That’s such a distant memory now
I wanted Kongu too LOL. I went to three McDonald's just to get him but ended up with 3 other Matoran.
The reason for macku's mask, is that the transparent mask were way more expensive to produce...
Not only she's the only one with a different mask then her toa, but she's also the only mctoran with the same colors of her respective toa and turaga, and that alwas bothered me.
All the other mctorans share the same mask as their toa and one color with their toa and turaga, but have one color that's different.
The mask of water Breathing was transparent, well because it's the mask of water breathing, but nokama's (metru) mask is something I dont understand why they made it the material it is.
@@TormaTOS The point is that they didn't used caucau on macku because it was way more expensive to produce then the regular masks. That's why they chose the huna for her.
@@OrdemDoGraveto *kaukau
@@TormaTOS I was adressing the question asked on the video as of why macku is the only one with a different mask then the toa of that respective element.
There are rumors the lighter trans blue 'misprint' Kaukau was produced possibly for Macku before they switched her to a solid blue Huna. I don't know if it's true or not, but a rumor all the same.
I guess since we have Halhi introduced later on though as a Kaukau wearing character with a new secondary color ('Metru blue' feet in her 2003 set) it kind of balanced out?
I was pretty excited for this review. I remember as a kid really wanting to collect all of these toys but only ever got 2 of them. That combination model was so awesome looking to me as a kid.
I remember searching for these as a kid back in 2001 and managing to find every single one but Onepu. After watching your excellent review, I decided to order him and complete my collection. Great Bionicle reviews!
2:09 Omg, that Mata Nui map on the backside of the polybag gives the edgy Technic/Throwbot/RoboRider vibes that Bionicle forgot after the first year. Awe
those discks gives me very strong vibe of Bionicle precursors Slizers.
Prices of these guys must have shot up since this video because they now go for like 35 each used :(
So awesome to see these packaged again. So nostalgic!
When I was a kid, I never got the final one. I think it was the water tribe one. But man. I was about ten or so and I cried that I missed them.
We ate at mcdonalds SO MUCH so I could try to get them all.
Watching this in 2023 , I was able to find most of these brand new sealed on ebay for around $35 each. Which is alot cheaper than I would expect for a brand new sealed item from 20+ years ago that was so significant to the franchise as a whole.
Honestly considering buying atleast 1 just to have that part of history.
It's a shame how underrated this show is
Onepu was the first Bionicle set I ever got, and he still brings a smile to my face when I see him!
Nostalgia activated🥺
This is according to Wikipedia. In the culture of the Māori of New Zealand, a tohunga is an expert practitioner of any skill or art, either religious or otherwise. Tohunga include expert priests, healers, navigators, carvers, builders, teachers and advisors.
For the longest time I was so confused about tohunga. Sometimes I saw them on the internet, but they were never available in my country in MacDonalds.
Well, now I'll have to gather them all, preferably in mass to make nice villages on shelves
It’s like 60 to 120 dollars for all of them here in the US, so I can only imagine in your country the shipping is insane.
What country do you live in?
Probably shouldn’t. There’s probably not enough of them in existence for every fan who wants one to get one. I’d be careful and considerate… don’t wanna run into a 90s-early 2000s comics industry dilemma again…
@@Luka1180 We can say the same about every retired set, especially ones with retired parts. Yet some people amass them anyways and no one really is hurt. I'm not going to buy hundreds of them, five-ten of each is more than enough for nice diorama on the shelf.
Especially since trying to get them is a bit pricy, so I'll have to get creative and hunt for cheap deals
@@TheCakesCup26 Shipping in my country is reasonable, but shipping abroad is insane indeed. Sometimes shipping is way more than what I want to get.
Never noticed the disk held on the back function!
I probably need to try that out!… once I get the pieces together again…
Man, how are these videos so high quality?
These happy meal toys are my favorite, the best imo. Miss these figs bro.
Nice video, very good format.
Dawg thank you. Nostalgia hitting rn
What's interesting is that they also had other Bionicle happy meal toys but most people don't remember them as well as the tohunga. I guess they weren't actually Legos though since they weren't buildable.
Not being buildable was a big disappointment. Should have gone McToran 2.0
I was able to snag an original box with all six tohunga sealed in 2020, my curiosity got the best of me tho and I opened the jaller bag haha, I think sealed he’s the most expensive? Idk sick review, rad little dudes!
In the thumbnail Huki looks like he's blushing because of Onepu's purple reflecting on his Kakama.
good review, though maaaan i could never put these or the turaga above the original toa....thats where it all started! but to each is their own ahaha, the toa just have such sleek builds, cool lore and more going on
These are some of the most fascinating models in all of lego for me. I don't know why I think they're so cool
I CANNOT believe how expensive the McTorans are now... inconceivable.
Here is an important little tidbit of lore from Bionicle, the masks that the matoran wear have no powers, but the throwing discs that they carry do you have some unique abilities that they can use.
On a curious note, here in Spain we got the Turaga with Pans & Company child menu
i like how most of these became toa later in the story
Bionicle for ever ❤️
Happy meals used to be awesome.
Now they definitely aren't
@@Thatdistantmirage agreed
I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD MOUNT THE DISKS 😭😭😭😭
Make more , it`s so cool .
I remember having all these as a kid from McDonald’s. Good memories
I wish I was old enough to have got these, but they came out 3 years before I was born. Honestly, getting a bionicle in my McDonald's happy meal would've been a childhood dream come true. I love the colour schemes of the Tohunga, it's also really satisfying to look at them in comparison to the Toa Mata. I actually think that some of the Tohungas' colour schemes would've suited the Toa better though, I think turquoise and lime looks really good on Lewa, black and purple looks good for Onua and white and sand blue works really well for Kopaka, I'm actually working on building some MOCs with those colour schemes but the pieces are hard to come by, especially the turquoise ones.
i feel like i was born much too late for my interests. i love bionicle and pre 2013 starwars
Don't feel bad. I was born in 1996 and I missed out on the McDonald's Bionicle toys even though I went to McDonald's every year as a kid. I never knew that these toys even existed until just recently.
By the way, did you know Bionicle is actually compatible with other 00's Lego sets with pin joints? Bionicle is even compatible with Galidor. Look up "Galidor Bionicle MOCs".
I always get nuparu and onepu's color schemes mixed up mostly with nuparu's though
Will you review other bionicle lines ?
Bionicle:
Tohunga/ Matoran:
Jaller.
Macku.
Onepu.
Hewkii.
Kongu.
Matoro.
I can’t believe what these go for now
I'm pretty sure I had/have all except Onepu. Although I definitely got the most of Jala and Matoro
slizer/throwbots discs (and toa metru also use these, right?) ^^
now that i rewatched this and own them, I think they changed hahli for maku because of the colors. Hahli had dark blue on her feet and a transparent masks, it could be because of they wanted a more appealing color scheme for childs aka electric blue on maku rather than the dark blue on hahli. Or it coult be that they only had normal blue plastic so they went with maku instead of hahli that has 2 blues, dark blue and transparent blue.
Matoro and Macku are my favorites
i got a complete set as a child and still have them. onepu needs a new arm though i was rough on it as a kid
Fun fact: this is dan schniders favorite combination model
"theese are really not that expensive right now" vs Me looking them up online because they are effectively the only thing i'm missing on the good guys side of 2001, Seeing them pop for $25 a piece with $70 added for international shipping. .-.
TO BRICK LINK! AND AWWWWWWAAAAAAY!
I made a bunch of customs amd completed ones by scouring brick link for hours
I always really liked these i only ever had three though i have all the ones on the left in the thumbnail of the video but cool nonetheless
Esta promoción llegó a México?
I remember when it came out, I always wanted onepu but the only one I get was matoro (3 times) and jaller
I bought a Jala with no disk because the ones with a disk were so much money lol
holy shit, who are the wonderful ppl who kept them in the original packages.
isn't it kind of expensive to order all these bionicle in their packaging?
Yes
Yeah, it's even expensive to order them without packaging
I think the last time I saw a price for kongu alone unpackaged was around $20 usd
I've seen some of these easily at $70
@@DarkoneplaysMC used or new? They are never that expensive used on bricklink so I suggest you go there instead of eBay
Cool i love it hehe
Man, it hurts to see how much I missed by beeing born a little too late.
had the brown one, but didnt get it from mcdonalds. dont remember was it in a bag or not, probably.
There is jąder, where is takua?

Those were the days
I hope you will review Hero Factory & Bionicle G2 too )
That would mean he has to buy a lot of hero factory and NO ONE wants to do that
@@deemcgann1695 why ? Hero Factory isn't bad
I got like, 3 of the ko-matoran a po-matoran, and a ga-matoran. Everyone I've ever heard talk about these guys seems to have a lot of one of the models and is missing half the others.
A moment of silence for all of the McDonald's employees during the Bionicle craze.
I doubt it was that bad, atleast for 2001 as these came out before the other sets.
@@TheCakesCup26 Not before the original Toa sets.
I had Jaller when I was a kid and I lost a disc.
Note the comic was in a lunchable promotion
Tohunga = A tier
You pasted the wrong description into this video
I see a lot of different Matoran sets. What were the original sets? I forget. Were they these guys?
Yep, these are the originals.
@@AllOutBrick Where do you usually buy your bionicle stuff? I usually use Amazon Ebay and sometimes bricklink. Any other site you'd recommend?
You didn't do Kaita...
Man i really miss when mcDonalds made promotional toys for other brands istead of only movie tie in stuff
And when they had diecast metal toy cars in Happy Meals... Even General Mills doesn't give away toy cars, Pop CDs or any prizes whatsoever these days. I feel sorry for kids today in the 2020's. They won't even know about Ronald McDonald.
I had these as a kid I remember getting them for McDonald's toys
I got Jala sealed for like 5€ 👌
The discs are pieces from 1999
7:07 HUKI NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooo!!
So, Christian. Do you have roots in Czechoslovakia?
How did you find these guys brand new? They’re like $150 used!
you can find these guys used on ebay for around 20$ and even find them new and sealed for 25-30$ depending on the character
@@jayc6894 DO NOT USE EBAY
Its cheaper to use bricklink trust me. I’ve been using it for a year now. My bionicle collection grew by 9 sets during 2021 and it wouldn’t have been affordable if I used eBay

Ebay.
Man I don't see either the Turaga or Tohunga being better than the Toa haha. As much as I like them.
Woa woa woa hold up. That's why they changed it to Matoran?? Because of a lawsuit?
Definitely not widely available.. these are even more expensive than most of the toa on bricklink 😭
But the entire system might explode if I reverse the flow.
