Agreed. He was just in a tight spot. He either had to spin his wheels and stay alive but not advance his board state or advance his board and hope for the best. He chose the latter.

I definitely played that beast within on the wrong creature. If I had killed the merfolk lord giving island walk we probably would have live one more turn.
