Wonderful to see Thundercoaster so well looked after by Tusenfryd after all these years. I was the engineer that designed the layout for this ride back in 1999 when I worked at Allott and Lomax in the UK. Originally Vekoma were not involved at all in the project - the ride was designed to run with PTC trains and was going to be built a US company called Coaster Works. Vekoma stepped in at the last minute and effectively "bought" the project because they were in the phase where they wanted to be able to offer both steel and wooden coasters to the industry. However, they wanted to use their own trains (naturally) and we were horrified to find out how heavy they were in comparison to the PTC coaches (remember the bulk of the design had been finished!). The other two coasters they did produce from scratch were designed by STAND Engineering in the US, and I remember I had to send them my layout for their review and they were horrified at all the uplift but it was too late to change anything. You've inspired me to make another trip out there to see how it runs nowadays :)
Strange question for you. Is that how most of these things work? The coaster companies in contract somebody else to design the coasters and they just control fabricating and the overall process instead of doing it themselves. Or is this just for certain things like with vekona they just went outside for design work for the wooden coasters or is everything that way?
@@arkitect156 Some companies are able to do more in-house than others, but I cannot think of any that have all engineering expertise plus fabrication under one roof - there are usually one or more sub-contractors and/or external engineering company that are used for specific tasks. These tasks can vary from layout/dynamic design, steel/timber engineering, train/brake/drive engineers, control system/electrical engineers etc. There are a number of engineering consultancies that specialize in the industry with the most well know being Ingenieurbüro Stengel GmbH and there are companies that can build heavy track such as CSM in Belgium that both Vekoma and Mack have used, and Stakotra Manufacturing which Intamin uses frequently.
Nearly 2025. This looks awesome. Wooden rollercoasters are the best! Not as fast, not as windy or inside out, but... still the best feeling, holding onto your seat, whilst hoping it doesn't fall to pieces around you. Yay! 😁🇬🇧
Reminds me of The Pippin at the Mid-South Fairgrounds in Memphis, TN back in the '60s. Great wooden coaster with lots of hills. The entire coaster was relocated to Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay, WI in 2010. I'm sure many more generations will learn to love this extraordinary ride.
Oh this is way larger than the Zippin Pippin. But the creators of this channel have actually ridden the recreated Zippin Pippin in Green Bay and done some videos about it. Mostly a modest ride for modern standard except for one singular super sharp hill.
@@_coasterhead_ actually yes, I live in Denmark and rode it a few years ago upon a trip I made to Oslo via the daily ferry that goes between Copenhagen and Oslo. Just took the bus from downtown Oslo to the park, spent a few hours there and took it back in time to catch the ferry back home. Thundercoaster was the best coaster in the park imo.
wow, never heard of this one - but damn... this has such a unique and fun looking layout, that paired with the scenery makes it look like quite a breathtaking coaster. thanks for sharing. :D
It looks a lot smoother now, compared to what it did before the latest re-tracking. Almost like it did when it was brand new, back in 2001. I still remember it like it was yesterday, the ride experience was great. It made me really enjoy rollercoasters, being my first experience with one. I remember the fresh smell of wood in its opening year. Combined with the great views of the park, it really had a good impression on me, and I rode it two times that day, since the queue was rather long (this was in the prime season on a nice sunny day). I came back in 2003, and the experience was still as good as I recall from two years prior. I really need to go back there soon and ride again, to get a real comparison between the new and old trains. Fun fact: The tunnel over the second drop was not present during the coaster's early years of operation, so you got to experience the drop in the open. Some turns has a higher banking than the original, which featured much stronger lateral forces.
I used to be a big coaster rider when I was a teen and young adult. My body can't handle the crazy ones anymore. This one would be perfect though. Beautiful!
Maybe or maybe not. I've ridden Thundercoaster and its a shaky ride. Thankfully not enough to be uncomfortable, but still enough to warrant a warning first. This thing will rattle you about and make you feel like its out of control as the train bounces down the track at high speed. Plus it still has some pretty intense G-forces for a wooden roller coaster.
I live in norway and has taken this ride up through the years. I remember them changing the cart/train at some point and I honestly thing the ride is ruined. It does not run smoothly anymore, it only shakes extremely much and it even hurts sometimes. Its really sad as it used to be my favorite. Many of my friends agree too.
Yeah its a great wooden coaster. Its the perfect amount of rough and sketchy. Not enough to make it uncomfortable, just right to make it feel out of control and raggedy.
I'd love to ride this just to say I've been on all three Vekoma woodies. This one certainly looks the most ambitious of the three. I do wonder what the Timberliners do for it. Loup-Garou tracks horribly but at least the trains are well padded.
The high stabilization makes it look like footage from a drone flying above the train. Not complaining, much rather see this than cameras at track level or speed lines...
Nah it ain't. But I think I know what you mean. You're probably thinking of "Twister". Twister is actually older than Thundercoaster by a few years but also features several notable changes.
Vekoma has actually made 3woodies: Thundercoaster (best of the 3 IMO), Loup-Garou at Walibi Belguim, and Robin Hood at Walibi Holland, which was RMC’d into Konda.
I have never seen this coaster before. The layout looks amazing. I love a good terrain woodie. Don’t really see Vekoma woodies that much either. Was it rough?
Have you ridden this coaster "Pre-Timberliners?" I always loved the setting and look of this coaster. I love the layout and the length. Is there a coaster in the US that you'd compare to this one? Great Video.
I’m a new enthusiast so I haven’t been to many parks, but either Fury 325 or Steel Vengeance, but I have a trip to Bush Gardens Tampa next year planned, so it might change.
I love the airtime but the timberliner trains make the coaster rough to the point of being unenjoyable. Would love to see a retrack and new trains because it relaly is a powerhouse, just unfortunately far too rough.
It depends. Ive not ridden particularly many wooden coasters and only 1 CGI, that being Joris en de draak at Efteling, but I will say GCI seems to primarily focus on small sudden pops of airtime, which is certainly great, but this has some really solid hills. Not every single one is a big hitter but its really good overall.
Where is this place Taylor??? If the pov is any indication this looks like a really good traditional wood coaster... It actually looks glossy smooth... For wood anyway
I just hope they replace quickly with something good.. we don't have many coasters at ky kingdom anyway. I think a raptor would be perfect for the plot and the park.
The color of the wood and the beautiful scenery... magical!

why does it looks so smooth.
Because the footage has been stabilised. This coaster is not smooth.

The high stabilization makes it look like footage from a drone flying above the train. Not complaining, much rather see this than cameras at track level or speed lines...
Because it’s a bit of a rougher ride, if we didn’t use as much stabilization, it would make the pov harder to watch.
