I freaking LOVE Christopher and am so glad FQS is showcasing male quilters. I know you guys have in the past, too. Quilting should be for everyone, and Christopher's eye for color, pattern and precision is next to none. TEACH US YOUR WAYS, Christopher! Love him to bits!
you made my day, week, month, thank you so much! i appreciate all the love. hopefully FQS will have me back? fingers crossed.
Great idea! I use painters and masking tape to mark my quilts, many of them twin size. The mistake I made was to sew right next to the tape, often catching the tape in the stitches. I never thought to position the presser foot next to the tape. This makes SO MUCH SENSE! I will try it on my next quilt. Oh. I now usually mark one line with the tape, and after I finish sewing the line, I will use the spacer bar on my walking foot to sew the rest of the lines. It’s not quite as accurate since the bar can move slightly, but when finished, is usually not noticeable. I live by the motto: Finished is better than perfect! Thanks so much for this tutorial. I really enjoy your teaching method. Very enjoyable.
yay! Another Christopher video! I also love straight line quilting. I usually mark my lines with a bone folder or hera marker but the technique is the same. Lots of great tips in this video
so glad you enjoyed this video and thank you for commenting. you bring a smile to my face. =)
I have found that the pink masking tape might leave some glue residue on the fabric, especially on slik, but the blue never leaves any residue.......
Thanks for the lesson! I don’t usually read the comments and it’s a little disheartening to see a lot of criticism! You did a great job Christopher and I appreciate your process!!!
Agreed. Don't understand folks being so critical of someone who is putting out a free video with nice tips.
I couldn’t agree more!!! I left the video feeling encouraged and excited, thought I’d drop by for some extra tips maybe in the comments, now I’m just irritated and mad! Christopher is doing his best at taking all the comments and apologizing to those who whine a great deal but honestly, do they expect him to redo the video in other colors for them?? For Pete’s sake, just follow along and get the message he’s trying to teach, stop being so over the top difficult and appreciate what he’s showing you!!! Ugh, should not be that difficult!!! Christopher I very much enjoyed the video and learned new ways to do things - THANK YOU for your help! Keep up the great work!!! 💗
I have used this method before on small projects and really liked it. As a beginner, I think the edge of the masking tape really helps guide the foot to keep lines straight. I did learn, though, to double check the spacing of the tape after it was laid down and to keep the needle at center position (I tried to move it to stay closer to the tape but then must have stitched the other side of the tape in the wrong direction so it made the spacing different). Thanks for the video!
ooooh yes, i can see where moving the needle would be dangerous. thank you so much for watching!
Great way to do quilting! Loved your tutorial.😊
Thanks tattooed quilter. Good tips👌
you're welcome! thank you so much for watching.
Thanks for the great tip! I will try it soon!
I love it! What a great idea!
yay! thank you so much for watching. =)
I have wondered about how to use masking tape for guidelines, now i know! Can't wait to try this on my next quilt! 😍
awesome, thank you for watching!
Just found this tutorial. Brilliant! I also use masking tape for my quilt tops, it I have always sewn right next to the tape. And since my sewing is not particularly accurate, I end up sewing on some of the tape. I always get it out after I pull the tape, but it is a pain trying to get small blue tape out of the seams. Never thought to sew with my needle away from the tape. Thanks for this handy tip. I usually do large quilts, so the masking tape will not stick to the fabric for more than a few lines. So I usually reuse the tape for one more line of sewing after I remove it. Thanks so much for this tutorial. Very informative and enjoyable.
Why in heaven's name would you use pink tape on pink fabric to demonstrate a tutorial? It's not easy making the distinction between the two.
Love your work!
thank you so much tami, i appreciate it. xo!
At first I was like.....'huh, this is silly!' Then I watched and closed my mouth...this is a GREAT idea!!! How many of us work so hard at the piecing and then zip through the stitching because we just want to get it done (or in my case, I have tops done and jump to the next project lol) and the quilting end up being sloppy.
Love this, I can't wait to try this 😊
i laughed out loud when reading your comment. i'm so guilty of moving on to the next project too. haha. so happy you like this. try it on a small project first until you get the hang of it. =)
I use it all the time when I make quilted pot holders, hot pads and zipper pouches. Painters tape too, whatever I have. Its fantastic.
I love your videos! I hope you keep doing them for Fast Quarter Shop.
Great video Christopher. Loved the pink masking tape but was a tad hard to see, still ❤😍❤'d it. You rock!
dang-it, i just love pink way too much. thank you for watching and for your lovely comments! =)
Yes very difficult to see.
OMG I so need pink making tape!
What a great idea! Wish I had known this sooner😍
thanks for watching. it took me a few years to learn this technique too. my grandmother taught me using a pencil or chalk.
Just found your channel! Love the ideas!
Love this. Making my first quilt. I wish I would have seen this video before I did mine... even if it is pink tape and pink fabric, I can see what you are doing well... thank you for teaching us the way you do things.. I have learned how to find my quilt as well thanks to your other video.. 🥰
Your a good teacher. I am unclear how it's all sewed together. Next time, could you have fabric , that contrast, with the thread so it shows up better? TXY.
love, love, love your show. Really enjoyed the organization of your sewing room.
I believe he is at the Fat Quarter Shop studio.
Great idea 👍🏻
Beautiful
why thank you! =)
This is such a good idea thanks for the share. This guy is one of my top quilters love Mary Elizabeth fabric line as well!
you're too kind, thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. xoxo!
Great tips. My only recommendation is to use blue painter’s tape. It’s less tacky.
@@SusanSmith-hl3iv it is and it's totally up to the quilter, but i've found blue painters tape doesn't always stay in place.
Sew fun!❤️
thanks Stephannie!
Got some great tips today. Thanks! I’ve used masking tape to mark my quilts, but always ran the needle next to the tape, causing the tape to get caught in it. Very hard to remove. It never dawned on me to run the edge of the foot next to the tape. Also, the spray basting information was helpful. Can you spray baste larger quilts? Say a large throw size? Really enjoy your tutorials. Will look for the machine binding video.
Hello, i made a quilt top from F8 strips that measure approx 4"x20" each, then all sewn together to make a 48x60 top. What's a good way to quilt these strips in your opinion? thank you.
oh goodness. i would either hand-stitch or machine stitch straight lines. not too dense or it will shrink your quilt.
Anyone know how to get the pattern for the quilt hanging behind him ?
Thank you
I really love this video! Such a great idea. I can't help but wonder about the spacing difference on each half at 12:29... Is the measurement that was demonstrated displaying the even spacing, or the uneven spacing?
I noticed you sewed from top to bottom, and right to left. I’ve watched videos where the quilter started in the middle then sewed out to each side, and turned the fabric 180 degrees on each stitch line. Why the different techniques and why did you choose your technique? Thank you!
Really like this! Thank you for sharing your technique. Should I back stitch when quilting?? Also, what is the quilt behind you? Thanks!
thank you for watching! i usually don't back stitch, but i do start quilting an inch or so off of the quilt top. that's why i like to cut my batting and backing the same size, it gives me a little wiggle room.
ohhh ok! Thanks for replying.
I'm doing a king size quilt my first one I know I'm crazy right🤦♀️but how can I quilt this one with masking tape? I did the 9 patch blocks it looks like a checker board almost
Pink tape on pink fabric made it hard to see. The fabric should have been darker.
my apologies, pink is one of my favorite colors. natural color masking tape is my go-to.
christopher thompson never apologize for the things you love. It was a good video
Really nice video! The audio and visual qualities are great -- nice camera work, and everything is so easy to understand. Now I know what to do better -- thank you! The only thing my eyes need that's different is a different color value of tape. But that being said, I'm wondering where Christopher got his tape? It looks like it goes on and off very easily.
I like to use the Green Frog tape...no residue.
I use blue painters tape. You can see it clearly and it leaves no residue on your fabric.
that's a great idea. however, i find that painters tape slides and doesn't give me the precision i prefer. plus, if you're quilting your project in the same day, it shouldn't leave residue. i've never had any issues.
I'd love to know what the pattern is for the quilt hanging behind Christopher.
Hi Cheya, we always link the quilts we show in the description, but that is th Meet the Makers Quilt by Riley Blake, you can find the kit here: www.fatquartershop.com/meet-the-makers-quilt-kit
The link is not working, August 2021.
My mind is blown. I am newer to quilting and this would have been amazing to know earlier!
awww, welcome to the club! thank you so much for watching.
My Brother walking foot has a guide for the lines. Also I have laser light to help.
that's fantastic. not every machine has a laser light. and i've learned even with a guide, i still don't achieve crisp, straight lines. but hey, it's subjective, right? thanks for watching!
Your lines are crisp for sure! I do not quilt my projects, only the very small ones as I find I can’t sit still for very long!!
Hi Christopher
hi marcia! happy friday!
It's easier to mark lines with a fabric marker!!!
yes, that's an awesome option too, but i've heard lots of horror stories about fabric markers!
@@christopherthompson1135 You can always use Clover chalk pen or soap :)
@@cfleyfel855 maybe one day i'll mix up my techniques and try something new!
It’s really difficult to see the tape in this video between the pink mat and pink fabric. I thought the Lori Holt mats were reversible, and didn’t even realize that that painters’ tape came in pink! How amazing that it works all be combined in a video one would really love to see well.
whoopsie, you're right. it's a tad bit difficult to see, but i love matching my accessories. hopefully the general idea comes across?
@@christopherthompson1135 I’m currently sitting here with allergies that have my eyes puffy, teary, and congested. I’ve taken Benadryl which kicked in just before I started watching and we all know how groggy that makes you! Plus I have a headache that’s been bothering me for days. I’m saying all that to say I loved your video very much, and even with all the eye issues I saw everything and learned a lot ! I’ll be saving this video for later use - THANK YOU VERY MUCH for an AMAZING Video with so many tricks and shortcuts along with instructions that are easy to understand! I appreciate you, keep up the great work!!! 💗
I am always surprised when watching People spraying glue do you not need to protect your surface cutting mat table top whatever?
Hi Penny! We used an old mat to spray on since it was no longer good for cutting, thus protecting our other surfaces.
@@FatQuarterShopTX Use 505 Spray and wipe the mat with a damp cloth when you are done.
@@cfleyfel855 that's a great tip, thanks for sharing!
i use an old cutting mat at home and cover other things with an old towel. thanks for watching penny!

💁🏻♀️I love you but you better move your walking foot, thread etc...eeeek spray baste spray near anything & near your machine, nice cutting table on mat 🥴that stuff makes a mess everywhere, while I have marked quilts with tape its easier to use the edge guide. I cannot think of any that I tape off any more🤔 almost all machines come with them & they are time savers + super duper easy to use. I did love ❤️ all your pinky PINK ! I am sure this tutorial will be helpful to some.👍🏼
Hi Linda! We appreciate your concern, we did use an old cutting mat that was no longer good for cutting to protect our surfaces. And we loved all the pink!
yes, just like glitter, it gets everywhere. i always spray in a protected area at home and just like FQS said, i too use an old cutting mat. pink is one of my favorite colors!
It’s hard to see where you are sewing. Should have used a more contrasting tape.
You could have used a glue stick for that little square instead of breathing in that spray.
hahaha, donna, i never thought about that, but that sounds messy.
Demasiado caro. Esto también se puede hacer con regla y lápiz, usando la regla como medidor de ancho y marcando con el lápiz por dónde quieres coser.
My struggle is on bed-sized quilts, the bunching required to get it into the sewing machine throat makes the backing get bubbly no matter how closely I pin-baste (if I used spray baste it would cost a fortune!). I guess this video can't address those real issues.
Pink on pink not so easy to see
