I play the Rumble 500 in my room with no problems. The volume control is surprisingly accurate, so it can be dialed in very quiet. If it was a tube amp though, that might be another story.

Absolutely no shame. I have a few basses around the $1,200 mark and I wouldn't pass up the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz 5 for the American Fender. I'm actually about to buy a Squier Bass VI instead of the Fender Pawn Shop version.
My first squire bass was unplayable! The neck was warped and the bridge saddles always moved.
being completely honest here: i think you might just be the very first person ive ever seen saying anything bad about a Squier...i can tell you had bad luck..
I currently have a Squier Affinity Strat from a starter pack and its amazing (ps its my first guitar) Im thinking of starting to learn how to play the bass with a Squier J-Bass kit
If it’s an Indonesian-made Affinity, it’s far better than the Chinese Affinity.
Squire makes some great stuff. I'm a guitar player, but I was hired back in 2013 to play bass in a friends band and me being on a serious budget, I bought a new Squire Affinity P-bass for $170.00 out the door and after a I did a little set up work, it plays just as good as any more expensive bass. And it sounds great too! I gig with it as well and it's been a work horse!

This is a pretty great pack. You have everything you need to learn and when you are ready to play in a band, you have a very gigable bass guitar. When you are ready you can get a better amp and keep this one for practice. This is really a nice setup...
I purchased this Squier starter bass pack earlier this morning (March 2, 2017) for about $323 US dollars. I chose the black and white one because it was either that or red and white. I start taking lessons on March 6th even though the starter pack comes with an instructional DVD.

Rumble 25 was my first bass amp and I still have it and it still kicks ass after 5 hard brutal years. Love it and it's one of the best starter amps for the money (only $100)
the overdrive on it really made me fall in love with it for its own pre built but not too strong natural distortion.

also if you're deciding between fender and ibanez for a starter bass the ibanez ones are super light, both to carry and to have around your neck for any length of time, compared to a fender jazz.
not the tmb 100 it is pretty heavy and feels a bit bigger than my jazz bass
Luke Moll I agree - Squiers are pretty heavy, whereas Ibanez basses aren't.

I am a lifetime tenor and bari sax player and low brass player (trombone, baritone, and euphoniums) and I am just beginning to learn some bass guitar recently and looking to purchase this exact setup. I am in the states or I would purchase it through your store, thank you so much for this very informative video that has helped me make a decision.
I gig with the 100 watt fender rumble and it's fantastic. I've had a number of nice comments on the tone. For reference, half volume and half gain on the clean channel will punch over a drum kit, but it's also very easy to use it at bedroom volume. for bigger and louder situations than pubs and clubs I've had an engineer use the line out into the PA and it worked a treat

The Jazz bass came out in the 60s not the 50s! The P bass was early 50s and it had the Tele style headstock, then came the classic P bass with the contoured body and flares Strat style headstock.
The quality on these packs compaired to what I got for xmas in 2008 is astounding...
I've owned two Squier Affinity Basses since 2013 (Gold Squier Emblem, upgraded tuners, etc.)
and have not had any issues with the neck whatsoever...but it still gets checked
These two have been modded up and gig regularly
Got a Squier P-Bass starter pack! Modded the bass with some DiMarzio pickups, a Hipshot D-Tuner, a Babicz bridge and even a new scratchplate, and upgraded the amp to a 300w Ashdown! Pretty damn good rig now

I have one of these Affinity Jazz basses, and I want to mod it with a 21-fret maple fretboard P bass neck, Fender vintage Jazz pickups, Badass bridge, and an active preamp. I love this bass!!
I wish I could see a video with bass and guitar interaction, coz It would be nice to hear a different point of usage of the bass just like it would happen in a band or between two buddies messing around, even though I know it's all about the bass. Thx for the amazing videos! :)

I have exactly that bass a 2007 Squire model made in Indonesia and love it. There is a truss rod issue but I can't do anything about that. It plays and sounds good. Will be picking up a short scale Squire Jaguar P J bass and 40W Fender Rumble amp when all this virus BS is over. I am rather partial to a Fender J bass in my local music shop. I will be getting an SBK-44 hard case for all the bases I will have.
I started out on an Ibanez, but own a squier fretless as well.
On the subject of sub 200 pound guitar packs. My first guitar was a behringer faux-strat starter pack, which was €130, and I still think it's a decent guitar and amp for starting out.
Really like your last few bass review videos. But...I disagree with your view on bass amps between about 30w and 80w being pointless. I don’t think you need to go straight from a practice amp to a 100w when you start playing in bands. I've played in pub/bar bands for over 20 years and always had a 65w combo. It gets over a drumkit at a rehearsal just fine and is great for small pubs as it doesn't take up much stage space, doesn't need two people to carry it and isn't overpowering. When I have played bigger clubs/venues, then they normally have a decent PA system with subs and so the engineer will DI the bass amp through the system and the amp becomes a nice little monitor. I think you underestimated the usefulness of a medium sized bass combo in this video, that's all.
I went from a 10W practice amp to a 100W combo because I joined a band, it's heavy when carried for a long period but it's by no means huge, has 1 handle which works and sounds amazing, I've had the same thing with them DI-ing my amp at bigger gigs, works fine!
I see what you are saying, but I kind of think you have in turn underestimated the arrogance of 90% of guitar players, 100ws just cover you for this, I've had this debate with ppl and they often say "just tell the guitar player to turn down" lol yeh good one, and while I'm at it I'll tell politicians to not lie, corporate CEO'S to be less materialistic and Nazis to treat Jewish people with respect
Why is it termed as a beginner bass yet it sounds so amazing
My Encore bass pack is pretty good and it was £149.99, the only issues were the lead stopped working after a few months and the strap wasn't strong enough for a bass. Apart from that the amp sounds alright, the bass is easy to play and sounds good and the general tools (bar the ones mentioned above) are all still going two years later.

If your going to get a fender bass on budget, the pj bass ver of this one is probably your best since it has the both j and p pickups
The rattle that Lee points out in the amp is a good one. Back when I was in my first amp I had a 30 watt Laney combo amp. It was a good bedroom amp for its day but after being run at full blast trying to overcome being drowned out by a drummer the rattle started. At the time I thought I had ruined the speaker by pushing it too hard.
Did the 30 watt get over the drummer or were you still drowned out?
I wish all music stores had your philosophy of not stocking rubbish. My first guitar and amp combo from my local store (now closed down) we’re absolutely terrible. Then I think I was really poorly advised on my second amp. It was only when I went into a studio and played through a vintage Hi-Watt amp when I realised how bad my gear was.
My first bass when I was 9 years old was a squier affinity p bass , it didn't come with the amp though , got it for 150$ with a Traynor 10 watt practice amp ... The amount of hours I put into those things is unbelievable
the beginner stuff has gotten so much better over the years...with pain i remember back of my very first strat knockoff! only swaping out the pickups my made that thing sound good! not even talking bout the problems with the neck...
I ended up smashing my strat knockoff in to a million plywood pieces. That rock star moment is all it was good for.

the only thing I didn't like when I got my squier p,was the action was super high,after getting that figured out its just as good as any actual fender p ive had,literally the only difference is the name on the headstock
I have a hotroded squier affinity pj, I'll never get rid of it.
I made my Affinity Jazz Bass into a fretless bass by changing the neck to a fretless neck part I ordered on eBay. The neck came out from a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. I’ll try not to get rid of her either, even if I’m famous enough to tour with a celebrity musician.

These starter packs are pretty good these days. Really, if I was starting out today I would probably go the route of starting off with a similar kit to this. The upgrade route would be to get something like a multi-effects like a Zoom B3n or DI box and use a PA for band practices and performances. Otherwise if you did feel the need to upgrade the amp for sound quality the Fender Rumble 40 and 100 are excellent and if you feel the need to change parts of the bass, such as the bridge or pickups, it is not like you are going to damage a vintage instrument as these things sell for a little over £100 on their own.
One thing I would like to see on this channel though is alternatives to this. Epiphone have some pretty beginner friendly basses in their range and cover areas like hard rock and metal that Fender are not so great with. Maybe you could show some starter kits and / or instruments from them. Possibly something like an EB0 or EB3 for short scale players, Thunderbird basses for out and out rockers and Embassy Pro or Toby for the quieter crowd. There are also a few interesting models I have seen in their range I have never seen reviewed too such as the Rumblekat and Viola.

That's my rig rigth now. I bougth a Squier j-bass for $187 on line and it ended up replacing my Ibanez soundgear.
I've done small gigs with a rumble 40. It's all about context. For small bars the 40 is fine.

Maybe a video on how much Rumble you need for a band? if I bought the 200 watter, am I going to run out of headroom when the drummer gets feisty?
You should be more than fine with that. Probably the only reason for a bigger amp than that would be for playing very large venues.
Some say the 100 is enough; others say the 200 is fine; forums are full of people saying only the 500 will do. Thing is, I would like to see an actual Andertons video where Nathan and maybe Dave have to put together a giggable bass rig on a sane budget, finishing with a jam with a drummer. Because once you're beyond the bedroom amp, it's all about being heard over a drummer.
They did that with guitar a while back, and it was good.

I know Scott Devine said that he likes around 300 watts, because then he knows he'll have headroom without having to crank it all the way up. Based on that, I went and bought the Rumble 500 knowing that I'd be safe, and it's not that expensive compared to tube guitar amps.
A really interesting video, I've always loved the squire stuff. If anyone ever tells you you can't do anything with an entry level guitar point them towards the first few Radiohead albums and shout Ed O'Brien begs to differ

My first bass was an unbranded, £80 new, bought on ebay. The setup was awful but a a newbie I had no idea. That ran into a tiny that didn't have enough power to use for a guitar.

With the Rumble 15, you probably wouldn't be able to hear it against guitar and drums.
sorry for not being clear but I meant other gear as well. Also, some more pedal reviews would be great, I'm looking into buying a pedalboard and I like a lot of the MXR line but i feel the videos already on youtube aren't that great. Maybe a little on compressors for something in particular. but i've been waiting for so long for andertons to start making bass videos a but more like the way Rob and Lee review the guitar gear and I think that the series has gone well so far
There a great way to start.and for ppl who want to learn how to work i.e set up repair on Bass and Guitars Squire is great wont lose to much if you mess up and if you do mess up that is just caractor to the axe!

How about just getting a bass, and playing thru my guitar amp? Does it really make much difference? Seems like a better option, if you already have a guitar and amp.
Basses can damage guitar amp speakers because of the low frequency and higher wattage
You'd want to put your Bass into a pedal if you do that.
I bought a Goth Epiphone Thunderbird off ya Lee! And it's pretty pants to start off with but I love the look of them and modded the fook out of it and now I love it! :-p

Changed the bucks out for Seymour Duncan Blackouts! New Grover tuners and a metallic scratch plate, active ore amp circuit too!

I know im a bit late here... but I traded my Goth TBird for a squier jazz bass and I never looked back. Fender is all about the quality and squier is no less strict about it
That's all I need , bass guitar is just a " at home " hobby " for me , I have no intention to get in a band , a expensive bass and bass rig would be a complete wast of money in my case , thanks for the video 👍🏆.
How about what bass for what music type, what models tend to be best suited to what genre/styles/types/tones
+Toxic Potato sorry I'd have to disagree, active/passive/mm type/jazz/p bass all have very different sweet spots, would make a great video, say pick 3 genres and play 4-5 different basses in that style to highlight the pro's and cons
I have the p bass one and I love it.
If you are in the U.S., In my opinion, the best starter option is an SX bass from rondomusic (~$120- $160), and the highest wattage combo amp from any reputable brand you can afford.
The quality of these starter packs has definately improved a lot since I first started playing. Back then the amp would be a horrible little thing that you could barely get a fart sound out of at decent volumes. Personally I started on an old Kay P-bass copy with a neck so bent that Robin Hood would be worried. I soon upgraded to a 2nd hand Jap Jazz bass. I wish I still had that bass but unfortunately it got stolen.
Kay? I remember those bro! I started in the 70's and the action a cheap bass was so high you could limbo under the strings! Today's cheap basses are incredible for the money. Modern manufacturing I guess...

@@ONOBITCH Bullshit. I played my Ibanez tmb100 around 250-300 hours now on my Boss Katana 50 and it sounds excellent. Not only is it a perfect practice setup including all effects you could ever need (i use some compression and a small amount of reverb) but also very good at recording on a PC over USB. You don't crank the volume up too much when practicing at home and any decent 12" speaker should handle that well.
@@ONOBITCH Point is: practicing amp / beginner amp / usage at home. Measurements done at one meter distance from amp i get an average of 60db, max. of 70db (medium grind with plectron). Overall at play along (example used is BTO: "You ain't seen nothin yet") 59 to 63db, music only is same volume as bass only. That's quite a nice slightly powerfull volume, but ofc. a far cry from live situations with drums and guitars at gigs. I think, around 300 hours of bass playing using my Katana is proof enough for medium (defined as 50w 12") guitar combos being suitable as bass practicing amps at home.
I've blown a practice guitar amp with a bass and a practice bass amp with a guitar, both at low volume. There's a reason they make amps for bass and amps for guitar. I guess if you absolutely have to play bass through a guitar amp, use a compression pedal.

re: cabinet rattle. I never owned a Rumble 15 but I do have a Rumble 25 and I find myself going over it ever 3-6 months with a screwdriver to keep it quiet. It's not a big deal, and, at least with the Rumble amps, can be compensated for.

Tbh Squier rlly isn’t that bad, I mean imma beginner well “sorta” I mean I actually am pretty good at bass. It’s a great bass if ur a beginner, and it has awesome quality!

Tried Affinity yesterday, it has a classic Fender sound, great playability, decent neck, but damn it if that thing has a single gram over 3kg, it's feather light, which means it'll be falling apart within a few years, which is a shame, could've been a nice ash body at pretty much little to no added cost, WHY they decided to not use ash is beyond logic

Rave LTG I wouldn't. You can, but you'll wear it out much faster because it's not made for those low frequencies.

How is the action and intonation?
Do some Bass Compressors... For example: Keely Compressor Pro, MXR M87 etc. Or some cheaper compressors...
Do electric guitars work with bass amps? If so would I still need about a 100W amp for my friends electric guitar to be heard over my drums?
They'll work and sound great for clean tones. Distorted tones usually sound really fizzy and woofy because of the horn and speaker design.

What are traditional staple bass guitar pedals? Like crybaby wah or tube screamer for guitar?
Sansamp Bass Driver is one that comes to mind.
EBS compressor (while there are other good ones), sansamp and bass big muff comes to my mind first.
watching Anderson's Music Co's channel makes me miss Rob.

You need a lot of wattage for a bass amp because the sound doesn't cut through as much as a guitar or drumkit, at least 150 watts would probably be needed, but don't use this as your only source of info, use Google
will deely no kidding but i would start minimum at 200w's. My second band(mid 90's) i played bass and i had a 140w Hartke head with a Hughes and Kettner 1x15 and i would crank it to 11 and it barely kept up with with my guitarist's JCM 900 and my brothers Tama Rockstar. Well when i bought my house 11 yrs ago i told my wife i wanted to start getting gear again so i started with drums and moved to guitar because my son(he's 19 now) got really good really fast and then bass, i got a 200 w SWR Working Man head with a 4x10 and it was right at the tip of being to low but was just loud enough so i got some new stuff, now i got a Hartke LH 500w head with a 6x10 cab and it has plenty of head room but my son's Ampeg 15w guitar amp has no problem getting more than loud enough, going back to what you said about guitar amps getting louder because of a higher pitch or something to that effect.

I agree with the bass amp upgrading ordeal.
I started on a Ibanez starter pack with a GSR190. Chucked out the amp and went over on GuitarRig for practice at home and a Ashdown MAG300 Evo II with a 4x10 Ashdown cab.
But the bass is still with me, granted the stock bridge, tuners and pickups are out right now and replaced with aftermarket items.
My first bass was a fleabass and my second was a fretless squier jazz bass.
AFFINITY PJ BASS ANY GOOD?
Cam Par it's decent, but i'd recommend the SX Ursa 3 from the rondomusic website. it's the same style of bass, but better quality in my opinion for about the same price
Cam Par I picked up a squier p bass for 80$ from a pawn shop and after some saddle adjustments that now thinking was pretty tedious to get rid of fret buzz it plays great now
