- springhillnurse... In this video, Scott from Spring Hill Nurseries talks about how to grow and care for phlox. Hardy, pest free and easy to grow, phlox is a stunning spring-blooming perennial with a lot to offer. While phlox tends to grow only about 4 inches tall, it will spread 12 to 24 inches creating a nice ground cover that doesn't get out of control.
In anticipation of older age, we've been replacing our grass lawn with creeping phlox. Easy care, no mowing, and presentable year round, it's also tolerant of errant steps among the stepping stones. In winter, the leaves take on a bronze color, when the Ohio snows let it show. If we could find a similar plant for under the trees, where the ground is often too wet for the phlox, we'd be all set.
That’s genius!
I'm with ya. Grass is boring
Beautiful idea!!! We’re getting older too and this is a great alternative to mowing once a week!
Try creeping Jenny. Likes shade
i snip 2 inch off tips that grow on ground and plug em nearby. they germ. also, u can sightly bury em long stalons. they too will root. well, for me they do.
Great job Scott!
After the blossoms die and fall off the remaining stems and leaves provide a dense green ground cover. It is so lush and thick you'll want to lie in it like clover. But don't. Phlox is a woody and prickly plant and very unfriendly to bare skin. Creeping phlox is one of my favorite spring flowers and is very popular around here (Arkansas) to plant on graves. In the spring local cemeteries are a patchwork of blue, pink, and white phlox.
asimov72455 I'm also from Arkansas and I was considering just spreading seed packets in my front yard and seeing what happens
How do you germinate the seeds tho? why cant there be a video where someone does it from the start yeno? seed? to plant to planting. easy
I just bought 4 of the lavender colored plants. They are beautiful and I hope they survive and continue to grow and bloom year after year.
Now 4 years later. How are they doing?
Thanks for this video - your creeping phlox looks fantastic! Have you ever had it rebloom after deadheading?
I like you Scott!
They are simply beautiful I want to plant some on my front heel
Thank you for your sharing brother
I planted a young creeping phlox at start of summer. It looks EXACTLY the same today, at the end of summer. Might as well be a plastic plant! Is this normal?
My phlox is start to bloom and call for freeze tonight of 27 degrees here in Michigan, how will that affect my phlox.
Take an inch (karate chops) lol
How is the best way to take in inch or two off the top? A weed eater?
He finally got around how to make it bushier at 1:14.
I want to cover the slope in my backyard with phlox.
thanks for the tip. mine looking pretty nasty right now. I cut alot of what I hope were dead growth from last year. Any tips for early spring, I have alot of brown stringers I cut off.
ilove this grand cover, please, can you say me what kind of phlox is it, cause i saw other kind, please, nice video, thanks
Looks like phlox subulata aka "moss phlox"
yes divided them...place them in other part of your garden....
14 inches a year or total?
do you have to waterr this plant a lot ??
One a week would be all that's needed. They don't require much water.
We have a gopher problem. Will they eat the roots of this plant?
Do they have to be divided or can I divide them if they start to take up too much space in my flower bed?
bromia2 yes u can divided them if you want
How many years/decades before my 10 phloxs will cover my little garden ?
Well, first tell us the size of your little garden, please. I think each plant covers probably about one square foot. The math should be easy.
Mine are turning yellow not blooming help me
Is this phlox bifida?
thanks. :)
lol thanks for the "step by step" Scott 💀
how does one grow flox?
Katie Macormic
Who gives a flox? LOL
What's the best way to "take off an inch"?!?!?!.... Literally cut every single stem 1 by 1 or what?!?... Just whack at it with a chain saw, hedge cutters etc...?!?... Idk the best way to do this
Use a ruler and determine how tall your Creeping Phlox is.
Let’s say it is 4” tall. Set your mower blades to 3”.
@@JD-qd5zp lol... That was a joke, right?
I TAKE IT FROM THE SIDES AND PLANT IT ELSEWHERE.
how do you cut an inch off that kind of mass? mow it?
I have the same question, can someone follow up?
Arcelia Dalton I would use a weed eater! It would be easy and fast. If you took off too much it would probably be fine though
haha ...that or send in your Guinea pigs :)
Welp. My creeping phylox does NOT look like this
bad sound
That is just the beautiful sound of a breeze blowing by the microphone. I’ll take that over canned music anytime.
