This is VERY helpful as my wife and I start planning a new landscape for our home (your “digging up established shrubs” video was also key in deciding we could remove some massive old azaleas).
Very informative video. One thing I've have learned the hard way is not to plant azaleas in full sun. Even if the tag says they will take full sun. There may be azaleas that grow in full sun, but I haven't found one yet. There is one method I have used to grow plants in full sun. Plant a crape myrtle or a small tree that provides some shade and plant flowering shrubs around it.
I think a #6 is drainage, which is a product of soil type and location. For example, does rainwater tend to accumulate in the area you wish to plant? Or does the area drain so quickly that the soil can be dry soon after a rain? A plant that needs moist but well drained soil probably won’t do will in an area that dries quickly. The good news is with soil amendments and practices like watering, mounding while planting, using French drains, etc we can address drainage. But we won’t know what to do unless we know a plant’s preference. There is a reason why we find willow trees and ferns near streams and not on the top of hills.

So here’s another variable that seems to get me when I buy plants. The front of my yard faces north east, the other part of my front yard faces north west. The porch steps and sidewalk separate the two. So when I bought two Nandinas, one for each space by the sidewalk, one died. The one on the north east side got too much moisture from the irrigation that is tied into both sides. But in the summer.. the north east side by the steps will get at least four hours of sun… just not consecutively. Some parts of the house shade it at different times. So, would this be shade only?
Great advice, this was really helpful! I have a question about amending clay soil. If I make the soil in the hole drain better, but the soil around the hole is still poorly draining clay, will that make my hole just fill up with water that much faster? Here's what I'm imagining: I have a hole that's big enough for the plant/root ball, maybe larger. I've conditioned the clay that came out of that hole with pine bark to make it drain faster, and I've back-filled my plant into the hole with that conditioned soil. Now it rains. Water flows through my conditioned soil better because I've made it drain better. Maybe even more water flows into the hole because there are coarser pathways for the water to infiltrate. But when the water gets to the bottom of the hole and hits un-amended clay, draining slows dramatically. So I have faster infiltration into the hole, but not out of it. I would be afraid that the plant would get even more water-logged in this scenario. Is this something you've experienced (maybe you conditioned some clay soil but still had root rot or yellowing leaves?)

Hey Jim! Love all the info from your videos. I have been experiencing root rot and mushrooms in my flower bed . When I started I made the mistake of removing the top 12 inches of clay soil and loading bagged black soil such as miracle grow and cow manure. How do I reverse this problem of soggy soil? Also I've begun to extend my bed by digging up more st Augustine grass and revealing more clay soil. I've been breaking it up and purchased gypsum and peat moss but have yet to add it. Is this a good idea?
Don't really want an evergreen on my foundation. Want the foundation shaded for cool in the summer and want the sun to warm the foundation in the winter
Yeah, at home depot they call it pine mulch. If you can't find it, just use compost. All the garden centers typically have it and call it soil conditioner

Great info!! Question: Is vermiculite a good soil conditioner for red clay? I have some evergreens planted in red clay that are not doing well. I'm thinking my problem was not using a soil conditioner. Would digging them up and replanting with vermiculite mixed in the clay help them survive?
Jim help, what would you use on the soil for english lavender if you live in my place?. I live in zone 8, clay soil and I'm planning to plant lavenders. And another question, plants love well drained soil, what mix will you use in my place, remember I have clay soil?. I planted ballerina lilac, hydrangeas, daisy and azaleas, I think the soil they are planted in isn't too good( good drained) I used cow manure, compost, peat mossand perlite and I mixed them. These soil thing is killing me I'm new on these, everithing else I have figured it out already. Thank you, I'm a big fan.
9GSR I'm no expert but I also love in zone 8 with clay soil. I've planted hydrangeas, lavender and craps myrtles with much success. I've watched a lot of Jim's videos and used a lot of his ideas. I've found that mixing sand, compost and top soil when amending works best for my plants. Good luck and happy planting!!

@@PJG1710 Sometimes the larger leaved azaleas are prone to get lace bug in full sun. Just depends. Encores like some sun.

I have a medium size yard and it is covered with dollar weed. Is there anything I can kill it with. I've been digging it up.

+Gabi Huggins replanting would probably be beneficial, but vermiculite holds to much water. Pine bark soil conditioner is the best thing to use.

You really should be avoiding peat moss. I would use pink bark soil conditioner. Make sure you are raising everything up a little.
