If I recall the male ant(drones) dies after mating as their genitalia is ripped out of their body, it's been years since I read about this so not sure if it's correct. When I was young I was very fascinated by ants and earwigs for a reason I do not understand.

Great explanation…. But couldn’t you use a slide with a concave center so the ant wouldn’t be compressed under a cover glass?

Yes, but I wanted to make a permanent slide and the concave slides are a bit expensive. And I did want to press it flat for easier focus.
