100% it's what I tell everyone at my gym too. Think of your arms as just hooks attached to your back which is doing the pulling. I usually recommend hooking the thumb over the top also. Not sure if that really does anything mechanically, but definitely seems to help people with understanding the hook thing and how it should feel.
Brilliant. This is exactly the missing piece for me, and the reason why I don't feel my lats as stimulated as they should be, even with the super-controlled eccentric.
@@maximisatwatno way he doesn't red up. Tren makes you turn tomato red with effort even if you're black or brown, and his muscles are ropy where tren muscle is really roundy and balloon-y
Going slow on the eccentric actually makes me feel my biceps a lot more on most back exercises. What works for feeling them best in the back (for me) is really letting my scaplulae move up/forward at letting my back stretch as much as possible, holding that stretched position for a bit and then explosivelly pulling towards myself and thinking about the movement coming from the elbows.
Same exact thing for me. Doing how Mike describes is great for warming up my biceps before curls/arm day. But to really feel my back I have to focus on the movement of my scapula, shoulders forward slightly and pulling hard out of the stretched position. Controlling the eccentric is usually legit but just with this exercise burns out the wrong muscles before my back is hit good enough imo
I started feeling my lat pulldowns after doing one arm lat pulldowns with one of the grips you would do cable Flys with. I focused on bringing my arms as close to my side as possible when pulling and then leaning and kind of rotating my Torso a bit to one side for maximum lat contraction. I would suggest looking up a video on how to properly flex the lat and cramp it, then do that with a one Arm lat pulldown with weight for both sides. This can also be applied to any muscle you're trying to work. Just look up how to fully engage the muscle and REALLY CRAMP IT without weight and then pull weight while trying to achieve the same thing.
I need Dr Mike and his son Jared to create an ASMR video called "The Sounds of Hypertrophy". Then they can start singing amongst the Swiss Alps, "The hills are alive with the sounds of hypertrophy!"
A guy I trained with used to tell me “ pull it against your chest for the stop. Squeeze it against you for a full 2 seconds. Then let it raise at half the speed”
Mind muscle connection I find is a practiced this thing. That the more you do it, the easier it gets for you. So just practice focusing on that muscle every single set you do and eventually over time you’ll find it a very easy thing to do
I've started doing regular pullups before lat pulldowns and my lats get destroyed. I know Mike doesn't recommend this himself but fuuuuck it feels good
Dr. Mike this was never answered before in your videos. What about the effect on joints with slow eccentric motion. I would love to slow down the motion but most of the time my joints start to give up way before the muscle. Like even simply with lats pull down, I did exactly what you described here, but my wrists gave up much earlier. This is such a struggle for me, as I would love to change my style completely to follow this.
What i like to do is keep my elbows tucked thru the whole movement for me personally i find that way to feel it more especially at the bottom it helps me to really squeeze the lat
Lat pull-downs are so frustrating when you’re tall. On the machines, you cannot get the stretch at the top bc the weight is set back down . I’ve tried to modify it, but I’m really struggling to find other methods. Any advice ?
I'm 6'6 with wide shoulders and long arms, any recommendation for how to feel my upper lats? None of the bars at my gym really feel like they're wide enough for me
So treat the concentric like powerlifting and the eccentric like bodybuilding. Or basically the way the old ones have been doing it since time immemorial. Grampa back at it again with the knowing wtf he was talking about.
Hey Mike, dumb question here but using the app and I’m deadlifting to gain horse strength but the app calls it a glute workout not a back workout, what gives? Don’t get me wrong I want horse cheeks but I’m trying to be able to pick up a smart car and throw it out of the parking space I want.
When was the last time you felt your back? You can barely reach your head which is definitely the only reason you have it shaved because you couldn't brush the glorious locks that undoubtedly would flow if you allowed it. For the algorithmic overlords 😂❤❤
I don't feel anything like this... I need to bent a little bit back while pulling and when it's in retracting position I like to slowly let go till full strech and then only I feel it in my back.
Any help is appreciated but whenever I do the full stretch in my lats my left lat like pops out or at least it feels like it does, it hasn’t always but one day I was stretching and I felt it happen and it’s been happening since
“sound of hypertrophy”🤣🤣😭
Shit killed me lol 😂
Made me question the main reason for being here 🤔no, it couldn't be for Hypertrophy ASMR 💪😆
Sound of pressing one out on a high protein diet.
Had me giggling lmao
Love ya Dr Mike!
Bro's hair style is majestic
Wish I had hair like that
😂
He has top tier head vascularity genetics
So shiny and glossy, you an see your own image in it.
Everybody tells me my hairline is receding, but I've had the same hairline since I was 3. I'm worried I'll never have this groove.
Seeing Mike's arms reminds me to do triceps today
I thought I was the only one lmao my biceps were small before so i focused on those and now my triceps look small
*it is rest day*
Random internet guy telling you everyday can be arm day 😉. Let’s get huge G!
And tren.. Don t forget the tren bro
This comment is to remind you to hit your triceps today
What really helped me was imagining that I'm pulling the bar down with my elbows not my hands, my hands do nothing except be hooks.

Dude the total amount of advice from many of your videos totally boosted my gains in a matter of mere weeks, cheers really!
What helped me alot was lowering the weight by alot. And then try to learn to Control the contraction and really feel it.
Since i started listening to your advice my workouts give me so much more results, thanks.
Same, really controlling the eccentric has changed everything for me
This is why I love the g
Channel he explains everything helps you and with humor too thanks
Bro's Lats are farting💀💀💀
Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed😂
Love this man, such a straight to the point no bullshit approach! Thanks Dr Mike!❤

FINALLY someone with some good advice on how to trigger lats on pulldowns
For me closing my eyes works like magic to feel the muscles
"sound of hypertrophy" is REAL
Thank you
Yep great tips and do all it slowly too get feeling to burn more
Dude that video you had on pull ups that was similar to this one man that shit works thank you brother much appreciated

A pause against the chest is a good thing too.

This is what my king my papa my pookie bear love of my life mikey mentzy preached for years may his soul rest
Elbows travelling in an arch only restrained by your lats
It’s gonna wanna bounce
Prevent that even below ur chin

I just did this workout for the first time Friday or Saturday night and felt it the next day.
This is how I do pulldowns and it's the best (for me at least)
Sick!
Love it
I’ve started doing this specifically with mag grip neutrals and absolutely destroying my lats. Back day is by far my favorite day now.
I've started doing regular pullups before lat pulldowns and my lats get destroyed. I know Mike doesn't recommend this himself but fuuuuck it feels good
Yep, Mike recommends the opposite @@SublimeCS
@@SublimeCS well it really doesnt matter what you do as long as you feel like your working your lats and your lats get strongerr
Ok thats funny, I already do that
Definetly feels the best for me and I have the greatest pump with it
Awesome 😊
Negatives are always better to stimulate muscles
This worked for me
Literally did this today 😂
I feel my lats on almost any back excersize except this one specifically☹️

destroys my forearms before i even activate the lat
use straps
I’m on the toilet rn, lots of “sounds of hypertrophy” going on

you can pretty much do anything with these as long as you get the bar below your chin
Good site
What i like to do is keep my elbows tucked thru the whole movement for me personally i find that way to feel it more especially at the bottom it helps me to really squeeze the lat
Ironically, most folks his size in regular people gyms MIGHT come down slowly...but they ALWAYS just let the bar go when their last rep is done.
How far should I go down? I'm just gpung below the chin and I feel a good activation, but I'm not sure.
I’m only doing pull downs to strengthen my pull up game
I fucking suck with weak upper body and so at pull-ups, so this is by far my go to exercise
Find your weakpoints and make them your strength 💪🏻
not bouncing is key
Looks a lot like pull ups. Do they work the same?
So I did this yesterday and for the first time in a year IM SORE !! Wtf
Thanks daddy

Yep
But how you do it when youre tall? Like 1.9m????
I can only do those in the assisted dip/pull up machine

If you don't use straps during back day then you will never build a good back. thick and dense back

what if you find the biceps more than authoring
Saw a dude turn lat pulldowns into a low row yesterday
