It's my most fave movie from the 90s. That confession by Jack is just like when Roy Scheider's shot finally hit that gas tank in the shark's mouth. It's a fist-pumping moment.
If an order is unethical, illegal, or immoral you have a duty to disobey, no matter who ordered the code red. Ever since the Nuremburg trials where the German soldiers said they were just following orders we have taught our US military members the rules to disobey. I served 20 years and commanded a squadron with UCMJ (uniform code of military justice) responsibility.
Meant no disrespect here. But, you can't really compare the Holocaust and a Code Red order. And without all the health conditions of the victim, he most likely would've been fine after receiving the CR. And since CR was a common practice under Jessep's command, there's just no way Dawson, Downey, or any of the other men would question, let alone, refuse that order.
@@dalewalls7689outright murder is not the only unethical order. Restraining and beating the crap out of a fellow soldier would be completely unethical.
There's a fantastic story on Jack Nicholson's last speech and the rehearsals, or rather when they were filming the lines and reactions of the other actors during the speech; Jack Nicholson volunteered to give his lines off camera just so his cast members would have something to bounce off on. Apparently the director Rob Reiner got a little worried that Nicholson was blowing some of his best stuff while they weren't even filming him, but as it happened each and every line delivery was exactly like the one they wound up filming when it was Nicholson's turn on camera. :) Consummate professional right there.
I'm 44 and this has been one of my all-time favorite movies since it came out in 1992. The entire cast did an exceptional job and the writing was stellar, as was the musical score. I'm happy you enjoyed it as much as you did Madison! Tom Cruise actually played a lawyer the following year in another excellent movie called "The Firm" which is also worth checking out!
A masterpiece courtroom drama by Rob Reiner. Cruise, Moore, Nicholson, Bacon, Sutherland...every actor just killed it. The screenwriting (so many good and even iconic lines), the close up and tense camera angles...Just one of the best movies of it's genre that will ever be. Awesome reaction to a stellar film, Madison.
Aaron Sorkin (the screenwriter) is a phenomenal writer. His scripts are thoughtful, intelligent and exciting. And the acting in this movie was top-notch! Still on my list of favorite movies til this day.
I remember the first time watching this movie where Danny pieced it together that if Jessop gave the order for no one to touch Santiago, and Jessop's orders are ALWAYS obeyed, then why would he also give the order to transfer Santiago for his safety? I remember getting angry at myself for not seeing what was right there in plain sight. Great reaction, Madison.
Fantastic movie and courtroom drama. One of the best films of the 1990's. It raises all kinds of very important (and complex) moral issues, like all the greatest stories do.
It seemed that there was a period when they took the young actors of the time and paired them with the older greats. Another of this type of movie starring Cruse is the Color of Money with Paul Newman which is the sequel to Newman's older film the Hustler. Pretty good movie(s).

This movie was a masterpiece! With this cast of characters, how could you go wrong? The message of the movie is definitely a moral issue. I come from a military family and this is exactly how things work. The police, policing themselves.
I was actually in front of a Navy judge in a military courtroom four times in seven months-- I didn't kill anyone, it was all for traffic offenses on base. I was able to plead one of my tickets to get thrown out but not the last 3. I was ordered to go to traffic school or lose my driving privilege on base. Each experience was actually very fun and interesting. I was also disappointed to find out that military courtrooms are NOT as fancy as the one you see in this movie. Also, in the military, you are required by law to follow orders from your superiors. However, there is such a thing as unlawful orders and you are obligated not to follow them. However, determining on your own what's lawful and what's unlawful is a position you never wanna find yourself in. If you follow an unlawful order, you're as guilty as the superior officer ordering you to do it, however if YOUR definition of what is unlawful doesn't match what your other superior officers feel is unlawful, then you're guilty of disobeying a lawful order. It's such a sticky situation. Military law is a mess but then again so is civilian law.
You are right Madison. They were very careful about what they revealed to us and in what order. Also in what order the defense discovered details. Every role was perfectly cast as well. And at the end when Dawson stands up and says "TEN HUT!!" I'm like...he's gonna say it....and I"M GONNA LOSE IT!!! every single time. Tears.

As a veteran I am so happy you watched this movie. "The we were supposed to fight for Willie" gets me every time. Yes, this is exactly right. I loved your reaction. Conduct unbecoming a US. Marine unfortunately the military has standards of honor, integrity, etc. so that is the only charge really, they failed, but the poor men were misled and used as scapegoats. The military does allow for you NOT to follow an unlawful order, but even then, you may pay consequences in the moment for not following an order, but in the end not following an unlawful order means not being held accountable or brought up on criminal charges. For Demi Moore's character she wasn't selected not because she wasn't a woman, but because they knew she would fight, and they wanted the cast swept under the rug. This cast was amazing. Demi was great she knew she wasn't lead but she saw potential in Tom's character. I loved it. It was cute their semi flirty relationship too. Jack Nickleson always plays amazing villains.

Breaker Morant is a fantastic film. It’s better than A Few Good Men in my opinion. No weak performances or contrived plot lines. It’s a must see courtroom drama.

It was great watching your reaction to this one, Madison. I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's the last classic from a string of classics that director Rob Reiner made in different genres from 1984 to 1992. His movies started to lose that special touch after this one, with maybe one or two exceptions. If you want to see another outstanding legal drama, you have to watch "12 Angry Men" from 1957 (not the remake). It's truly amazing. I think you would love it!
Your reaction to this epic movie was spot on! You are very insightful and seeing your intricate recollection of various scene details shows how intently you watch and enjoy movies. Your reactions and total enjoyment of watching a well crafted motion picture are very refreshing and entertaining in their own right! Thanks for doing this…you are the most real and thoughtful movie reactor on the internet!!
The script comes from the mind of Aaron Sorkin, one of the best writers in hollywood. All of his works are extremely well written: The West Wing (1st 4 seasons), Trial of Chicago 7, Newsroom, Social Network, Moneyball, Steve Jobs, Charlie Wilsons War, The American President
The film was written as a Broadway play by Aaron Sorkin, who was also the creator/writer for The West Wing, The Social Network, Newsroom, The American President and many other award-winning shows and films. It was also directed by Rob Reiner. Excellent film! I love Sorkin's stuff. I'm a huge fan of The West Wing and Newsroom.
Madison, congrats on 13K subscribers. I wonder how you feel about so many people, literally from every corner of the world, with different languages, histories, politics, beliefs and cultures all gathered to your channel to enjoy films and series with you? I hope it makes you happy. ♥
Another great reaction. Outstanding screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (who created and a lot of the scripts for The West Wing). This is based on a play he wrote. As gripping as the courtroom scenes are on film I imagine they’re even more intense on stage.
I personally love your reactions. I only watch reactions on movies I've seen myself and I like your responses. Cheerio lass, warm greetings from Belgium.
i'm sure you noticed that at the beginning of the movie Kaffee thinks he was assigned the case because he was a great lawyer. at the arraignment he finally discovers that he was assigned to this case because the brass wanted a plea bargain. also the on/off contention between he and Galloway only masked what she really thought of him.she knew he was the right counsel for the defendants.
Brutally honest here - the people responsible for Santiago's death are the medical personnel who lazily diagnosed him with heat exhaustion because they couldn't be bothered to treat their patient as a human being rather than an obstacle to them getting off work early. Probably the most realistic thing in the movie is the incompetence of military medical staff.
I was brought up in a family of Marines & remember watching this movie in the theater. Its definitely entertaining & the military court aspect is certainly unique. Great storyline for sure.
Hey Madison, I love this movie and I honestly believe it is one of the more underrated movies of the last 30 years. I SUBSCRIBED (and gave likes) on both my UA-cam accounts because you reacted to this. If you haven't, can you also do reactions to "Something About Mary" and Meet the Parents & Fockers? Those are 3 great and underrated comedies and not many reactions on UA-cam.
Great job. And nice argument for Tom Cruise's ability and undeniable charisma. I am not a big fan of his beliefs or who he may be as a person, but almost all of his performances that I have witnessed are compelling and my respect is only doubled because of his reputed fearlessness in regards to the stunt work. Cheers!
Madison, it is such a joy to watch your reactions. Really so insightful. There is another movie which Tom Cruise was in that I enjoyed, though not one of Tom's best performances. He co-starred with Paul Newman in The Color of Money. A film which got several Oscar noms, and for which Newman won best actor. Years earlier, a very young Paul Newman starred with Jackie Gleason in a film called The Hustler. The movie centered around a pool match between legendary Minnesota Fats (Gleason) and Fast Eddie Felson (Newman). The color of money finds an older Eddie Felson trying to teach Cruise's character the ropes. Really 2 very well done films.
I've just started watching this one, but just in case I forget - another great courtroom drama is My Cousin Vinny! Ooh, Marisa Tomei, and her Oscar! Apparently a classic for lawyers, basically a lesson in court room procedures. But very funny!
Great behind the scenes story came from Noah Wylie (of ER fame) who said during the initial table read that everyone was relaxed and kind of mailing it in, then Jack NIcholson started to read his first lines, and everyone (even Cruise and Demi Moore) immediately sat up straight as if to say, "Oh, we're doing this for real .... OK"
Yep, the UCMJ says you’re required to follow the lawful orders of the officers appointed over you. With code reds having been prohibited, the order was not lawful. So the question becomes did Dawson and Downey know (or should have known through reasonable diligence) about the order banning code reds. Apparently the jury believed so.
Thanks Madison, you nailed it! This is a masterfully written script brought to life through great acting and direction. The end courtroom scene is a masterpiece.
Your comments on courtroom dramas got me thinking of another must-see of the genre, Philadelphia, which came out just a year after this film. It won Tom Hanks his first Best Actor Oscar and co-stars Denzel Washington in a role that is seldom mentioned in relation to his stellar career, but in my opinion is one of his best performances. It's a fantastic movie and a very important one in relation to its content and its time. It would be well worth a reaction video.
Aaron Sorkin wrote this as a play. Aaron Sorkin is one of the greatest TV writers of all time. He wrote almost the first four seasons of The West Wing by himself. His ability is otherwordly.
You are 100% right when you said “Justice prevails and so often today it doesn’t”. You are right and that is just sad that we as the public feel that way.
Great commentary on an all time classic. I know another great court drama that not many people know about. 'Breaker' Morant, about the Boer war in South Africa in 1903. No happy ending, I am so to say, but a classic. Plus I haven't seen anyone on UA-cam do Charlie Wilson's War, a great Tom Hanks movie about the CIA supporting the Afghans against Russia in the 80s
This came out, while I was in the military. The Navy was massively cracking down on s3xu@l harassment, and some of the comments made by Cruise and Nicholson's characters would have caused them some major trouble.
The original black and white (not the colorized version) *12 Angry Men* from 1957 is the courtroom drama to watch. Amazing how much stress there can be with 12 men sitting in a room talking.
A movie which I can advise to watch from the earlier carreer of Tom Cruise, is the 1993 film The Firm by Sydney Pollack based on a thriller book by John Grisham. Tom Cruise also playes a layer (in another kind of pickle)
"Conduct Unbecoming" -- the charge of which Dawson & Downey were found guilty is the title of a British Military courtroom drama. Based in India "at the time of the Raj', starring/featuring the brother-sister pair of Michael and Susannah York, Stacey Keach, Sir Richard Attenborough, Christopher Plummer, Trevor Howard. Rooted in fact.
Seen a few of your reaction videos and enjoyed them. First time looking at your social media. Never knew you had such a beautiful, brilliant, artistic talent... Do you do consignment work? From pictures, and/or even fantasy work to place the subject into a "super hero", "movie roll" type of character?
43:43 I think even more important was what he said to him: "you don't need to wear a patch on your arm to have honor." that is something which would have changed his whole outlook on life after being in the forces.
I really like how how you take the time to actually get into and enjoy the movies you watch without the constant talking throughout. I understand that you reactors have to do a certain amount due to copywrite but some of the people can't seem to stfu long enough and dig the movie which makes them miss what's going on. Btw I love this movie as well and have watched it a ton of times. Should watch Spinal Tap also directed by Rob Reiner and is a great comedy.
You haven't even scratched the service with Tom cruise yet that's the scary part. Regarding any eras he might be considered the Goat honestly. His filmography is practically unheard of scary. If You like love rom comes than "Jerry Maguire" and then " The last samurai" just for beginners. He's literally a living legend
Some of the great coutroom films are My Cousin of Vinny, 1992, the Lincoln Layer 2011, A time to Kill 1996, 12 angry men 1957 and I would also suggest Juror from 1996
This was a really great video. It’s such a delight to see your raw and honest response to such excellent filmmaking. And I really appreciated your personal thoughts on Tom Cruise as an actor. Your acknowledgment and appreciation for his honed skills at his craft. There is a weird flow in the ether of how people perceive him. He’s a brilliant actor who’s made many extraordinary films. Going to recommend two of Tom Cruise’s greatest performances. “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989) “Interview With a Vampire” (1994) Both these films are extraordinary. And Tom Cruise is as you’ve never seen him in both of them.
Knowing where it would end up, I chuckled when you latched on to "the right man for the job". Also, the exchange between Jo & Sam about their attitudes perfectly summed up where Jessup went wrong. He may well have been a good Marine at some point, but he forgot why he was on that wall.
I have to say, I really appreciate Madison's reaction style. You can tell she genuinely pays attention to the movie and gets involved, because she goes for really long stretches saying nothing. I mean, I get why the "other kind" of reactor is popular, the ones with flamboyant personalities who always have funny quips. But sometimes they drive me crazy because it feels like they're barely paying attention to the movie and are just trying to put on a performance themselves.
I'm really enjoying your reactions. This is a great film. Another you might like is A Time To Kill based on the book by John Grisham. Kiefer Sutherland is such a great actor. He plays a bad guy so well. I'm sure he's probably super nice in real life (I hope he is), but he nails the bad and creepy roles perfectly. Looking forward to more reactions from you.
Hi Madison. So glad you watched and enjoyed this film. It really is a great movie. Another great, in my opinion, Tom Cruise movie is 'The Last Samurai' I think you would enjoy that one too.
I remember seeing this at the cinema when it came out. It's probably my favourite film from 1992 (along with White Sands), which is an accomplishment because there were some very iconic films released that year, including Reservoir Dogs, Scent Of A Woman, Unforgiven, and The Last Of The Mohicans.
For another good court drama you should watch "12 Angry Men" (1957). Granted it's an older, B&W movie shot mostly on one set, but it has many great actors from that period including Henry Fonda playing the lead, and a story you will get really wrapped up in. Saw you've done only one '50s movie (Rear Window), and it would be a good addition to your video library from that decade.
Could some please clarify. The defence surely can only call witnesses for the defence but from the get go kaffe treated him as a hostile witness. It should of been the prosecutions job to x examine Col Nicholson.
36:25 - I think Dawson knew it was "morally wrong", but he'd been slapped down before for interfering with a Code Red in the Curtis Bell incident, so he went through with the Code Red order this time. Edit: And also Dawson had been protecting Santiago from getting Code Reds. So that, plus interfering with the Curts Bell code red, showed that Dawson wasn't really down with Code Reds.
Great, glad you are experiencing and appreciating more Tom Cruise films! Another great one is "War of The Worlds"! He was amazing in that! You should see that one as we get closer to Halloween-season! You'll be blown away at his acting. Also, check out Magnolia and Collateral, along with the Mission Impossible franchise! Oh! Also you should watch "Born on the 4th of July"!! He should have won an Oscar for that film!
This film has aged very well over the years. I’ve never gotten tired of it, and is just executed with precision.

Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it🙏
I personally love your reactions.

Great movie. I saw it in the theater when it came out. Great selection for your reaction
I was brought up in a family of Marines & remember watching this movie in the theater. Its definitely entertaining & the military court aspect is certainly unique. Great storyline for sure.
First time watching this movie was amazing. The hundreds of times watching it again, it's still amazing. And congrats on 14k!

This movie included so many stars and actors of note and was originally a stage play that Rob Reiner turned into a movie.

I enjoyed hearing you try to work out what happened. You had a lot of good thoughts. Thanks!
It perfectly addresses the "I was only following orders" defence.

But very funny!
we need more intelligent reactors like this
Agreed. She's the only one I've found who actually has anything insightful to say during her reactions.
@@lonelyboy1977 I second that.
I third that.

Tom cruise is almost unrecognizable in the movie Tropic Thunder. Crazy movie. You should react to it.

My second favorite courtroom movie after this one
Boss film.
Aaron Sorkin wrote this as a play. Aaron Sorkin is one of the greatest TV writers of all time. He wrote almost the first four seasons of The West Wing by himself. His ability is otherwordly.

I worked at a Musicland/Sam Goody back in the day and every time we'd played this, shopping stopped for Jack Nicholson's speech. So intense.
Tom Cruise gives the performance of a lifetime in Born on the Fourth of July. It will blow you away.
You must've at least heard the name Aaron Sorkin before. This was his first screenplay adapted from the play that he wrote.
Great reaction Madison I've always loved this one... two other great movies are Braveheart and Good Will Hunting from the 90s

It just hit me how funny it is to see Tom Cruise doing an impression of Jack Nicholson in front of the king of impressions: Kevin Pollak.
The original black and white (not the colorized version) *12 Angry Men* from 1957 is the courtroom drama to watch. Amazing how much stress there can be with 12 men sitting in a room talking.
20:19 -- Saw the movie back in 1994. To this day, Patty Loveless' "Timber, I'm Falling in Love" reminds me of this movie, and vice versa.

A movie which I can advise to watch from the earlier carreer of Tom Cruise, is the 1993 film The Firm by Sydney Pollack based on a thriller book by John Grisham. Tom Cruise also playes a layer (in another kind of pickle)
Born on the Fourth of July is tough to watch but among his best roles(Cruise).
Been watching your reactions for a while now, finally made it official and subscribed. :) I had no idea you are such a good artist!
FYI Susannah and Michael York weren't related to each other.
@@mark_p300
I stand corrected.
A riveting and electrifying court room drama, eh? So, from "A Few Good Men" to "12 Angry Men" when? :D
Seen a few of your reaction videos and enjoyed them. First time looking at your social media. Never knew you had such a beautiful, brilliant, artistic talent... Do you do consignment work? From pictures, and/or even fantasy work to place the subject into a "super hero", "movie roll" type of character?
Yes, I do commissions. There's a contact form on my website : )
Glad you're enjoying the reactions!
30 years of greatness and my mom's favorite movies, cool reaction as always Madison, take care sweetie 🥰

43:43 I think even more important was what he said to him: "you don't need to wear a patch on your arm to have honor." that is something which would have changed his whole outlook on life after being in the forces.
perhaps the best ' courtroom drama ' - ' 12 angry men' from about 1957 or so..... no car crashes, no sex, no CGI .

If you have a minute, look up Wolfgang Bodison's path into being cast as Dawson. It's a cool story, and an excellent performance.
Another terrific courtroom movie is “My Cousin Vinny”.
never get tired of this movie

Going to recommend two of
Tom Cruise’s greatest performances.
“Born on the Fourth of July” (1989)
“Interview With a Vampire” (1994)
Both these films are extraordinary.
And Tom Cruise is as you’ve never seen him in both of them.
I forgot requesting this. Glad you reacted.
Knowing where it would end up, I chuckled when you latched on to "the right man for the job". Also, the exchange between Jo & Sam about their attitudes perfectly summed up where Jessup went wrong. He may well have been a good Marine at some point, but he forgot why he was on that wall.
Jack gave one of the greatest moment in movie history with that rant. More umpf than. I’ll make him an offer he cant refuse

A great film and a great reaction, Madison.
I'm pretty new to your channel, and I have enjoyed the reactions I have seen so far. Looking forward to more.
Interview with the vampire is a good movie Tom was in an he was great
I have to say, I really appreciate Madison's reaction style.

So classic! Also please add Far and Away to your list. It has Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and directed by Ron Howard.
Powerful review of an outstanding film. This is a great channel and you are eminently suited to your role as a reviewer!

A funny movie that Tom Cruise has a bit part in is Tropic Thunder. Another must see movie with Cruise in the lead is Risky Business and/or The Firm
first time watching and i find you so delightful to watch such a beautiful soul. i'm subscribed

you must check out HIGH CRIMES, also military legal drama starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd. one of my favorite movies of all time!
My best experience with movie with court room is Cousin Vinny.
Very funny, many memorable moments.
Recommend it!
Cheers from Hungary!
You must give Scent of a Woman a watch. You will nit be disappointed.
"White Sands" is a great film. Sadly it's ignored/overlooked by reactors.
Nice reaction. Good Will Hunting next please 😊
