Me and Chris from Guitar slinger hockey Collab with Bladetech to test some profiles. I have never profiled my skates, but after this... I may have changed my mind. Thanks to Guitar slinger hockey for this fun collab!
Also in love with the fact that you used the word geometry, because that's what this is, instead of like every on-air personality using the word "calculus", when they have like, a single unknown factor. Cause that's simple algebra. Thanks guys, this is absolutely brilliant!

Sorry, late to the party! I wanted to offer some additional thoughts, along with my experience. I know this is beer league, but I was struggling to find guidance for my 9 year old son. Everything I could find said, don't waste your time, or they won't know the difference. Well, I took a different approach! First, it started with him taking tight turns and wiping out non-stop. He was a decent skater, so it baffled me. I started down the rabbit hole of skate profiling. First, I found stock steel sucks! I stumbled onto Bladetech! This was the best thing that happened. Their stock steel had a profile built into the blade. He was size 2.0 at the time, so it came stock with a 9-10-11 profile. We saw an immediate improvement with his turning and agility vs the stock Bauer 13' balance blade. Also, we immediately noticed the 1/2" radius sharpening was way too sharp. We moved him to the 5/8", and it was perfect. Fast forward one season, and he has so much more confidence, speed, agility, etc. I know they say you sacrifice speed or agility, but at this age, I don't think that's the case. For those of you still following, this is where the journey really took off! My son continued to get better and in-tune with his ability, and areas for improvement. He complained about balance/stability at times, and skating backwards. Plus, he wanted more open-ice speed. I mentioned to him, you only play forward. Then, I thought about it, they do so many skating drills at this age to grind on the fundamentals. Either way, I decided, profiling seems like an amazing advantage that is ignored at this age. I decided right there, that I'm going to give him an advantage, if I can. I bought several sets of steel on sidelineswap, then went to my local shop and created my own profiling kit. I started with his stock 9-10-11 from Bladetech, which he loves. We did several skating drills to test all edges of the blade. In addition, we tried the Zuperior 3XS, Quad 3XS, Ellipse 3XS, and a combo(9-12). They didn't have a CAG profile, otherwise I would've tried it. He didn't like the Zuperior at all. The Quad felt a lot better, and very similar to the Ellipse. His favorite, and better than the Bladetech 9-10-11, was the 9-12 combo. I don't know if it's actually the 9-12 combo, or the confidence of knowing what he selected, but his skating is so much more confident, faster, cleaner. etc. Lastly, I noticed a bit of chatter when he moved to the profiles, so I'm going to try moving his sharpening to 11/16 to see if the profiles feel better. That is something I found while researching. Several people recommended going shallower if you prolife the blade. Thank you for the video, I was struggling to find value in profiling, but you helped reinforce my ideas.

Great vid, best one yet and one of the best videos on profiling on you tube!!! I profiled my skates last year and had the best season I’ve had in years. Totally agree it helps your shot as you get a much more balanced feel when weight transferring into a pull in/toe drag shot (or just in general). Well done boomer… beer leaguers around the globe needed this vid 👊🏼

Wow! Just what I needed to see. I had an injury which kept me off the ice. When I got on things changed. I had developed DVT's after the injury and had an incident on the ice. It took me a while to figure things out. I changed my grind to 3/8. Then I had my skates reprofiled to Quad II about 1/2 forward lean and this profile is for balance and stability. The 3/8 grind will more than likely have to be sharpened after each sessions. 10 bucks well spent. You two have given me more confidence that the change in profile will be a benefit as well.

Great Vid. Have had my skates profiled since a young age. Always went 11 foot but since I’m older and fatter now I switched to tydan/skatescribe power cut. What a difference. Unfortunate some of my buddies who think “they don’t need” profiling won’t even give it a shot.
I was one of those guys. How wrong I was. Once you skate on 4 different ones you realize that it’s completely different. Definetly worth trying! You’re buddies are missing out like I was

It is great. Agile, fast and stable.
Why didnt you put it on the list?
Good question, Chris was the profile guy and he provided as much as possible. I don’t think bladetech wanted to give us to many sets of steel as technically they have us 8 sets 4 for Bauer and 4 for ccm.
There are so many profiles I can imagine their was some good ones we didn’t hVe

Ok, thats right. If you have the chsne to try Ellipse - do it. Its a good alround profile.
Btw: Have you already tried the LX2 Pro?
If yes it would be nice to get a short dign if its worth byuing it

Hey there, what Justin said is correct. I was given four profile choices and went with the more common options. I did also have a set of Flare steel with the Ellipse zero on it. Unfortunately it was only for the XS holder so Justin couldn’t try it.
Went to the triple profile 2 years ago for my HS player. He's never looked back. But now I'm curious about the Cag One. Profiling is soooooo underrated. Great choice for a video
I now know it’s under rated! I was a skeptic. There are so many so it’s defiantly subjective, but once you find that one you like what a difference
This was my suggestion over a year ago! This is the most important thing when it comes to hockey equipment. Nothing effected my game more than playing with profiles. Period. End of story.

@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews Don't be afraid to do another video trying more profiles. I have a 280 skate blade, weight about 215 and would suggest the quad 0.5 for you in a 3/4 sharpen for you. The profile is a toned down quad, 8-10-12-14. Notice it only jumps by 2's. All the other quads jump buy 3's. After that try the elipse. Have fun.

Tried quad zero as a novice. Hated it. Too much ice contact, IMO, which made agility stuff difficult. Felt okay for speed though. Instantly felt better when I switched back to stock.
I've been curious about Zuperior. Might give it a go.
I enjoyed the zuperior too and also struggled with quad so that’s neat we felt same.
I went on the ice yesterday (5/16) Quad II Profile 3/8 sharpen. Off ice balance was much better. On the ice made it up to the blue line, which has been my norm. Kept repeating my norm. Finally, went blue line back and rest. Entrance to redline back and break. Entrance to far blue line and back. Then , entrance to end of ice and back. I have not been able to get to the redline for ever . Let alone the far blue blue and end goal line. It worked. My injuries to my right leg, etc have been devastating, but not anymore. Leaving soon for Memorial Day back home. Then back on the ice!

I’ve always used 1/2 sharpened and now after a 12+ year hiatus the guy at the store did a 5/8 and I really liked it. What I didn’t like was how fast it wore down and the profile they sharpened it too. I like my entire blade sharp and they just did the bottom and I fell a lot at first trying to use my toes and dragging heels.
Try 9/16. That’s what I went to cause 5/8 was a little too shallow for me but 1/2 was a little too deep
Finding that sharpening is important to. I like sharp for turns but realized I was compromising speed and stopping
Yep the deeper your hollow the more drag you have. I started with the 1/2 like we all do and now do 11/16.
Unlike with stick flex, your body weight does come in to play with your skate hollow. If you're a heavier player, you can get away with a shallower hollow since your weight will keep your edges pressed into the ice more than a lighter player.
So, try shallower hollows ... you may be leaving speed on the table.
I dropped my sharpening a bit after this to help. I’ve always used a very sharp hollow but I think I’ve found a happy medium now
I've been using 1/2, I weight about 198 pounds. What do you guys suggest I switch up to? I know nothing about profiling
I’ve learned to skate and play hockey two years ago. I’ve had stock profile the whole time until just recently. About a month ago I tried out the zuperior and I felt a noticeable difference right away. I feel more traction on my starts and turns feels easier. Stocks felt like I was stuck in mud and very heavy. I’d like to try the quad next.
thats exactly how i felt, the stock felt like i was on figure skates flat and no agility after this.

What profile do you end up using? Original, or the cag? The cag seems interesting, what’s the feedback like? I kind of want to try it out.
Cag. Yes it’s just different. See with profiles I wasn’t a fan of the “this is what it is supposed to “ as opposed to shit feeling really good on the ice. That’s why we tested this way. I settled on feel. Instead of what the profile is known for. I felt stable and agile
Yeah I get that, marketing can be a bitch. Mostly to make money. Out of curiosity, what made you choose the cag over the zuperior?
@@nicd5439 it’s been a bit now and I’ve been skating for awhile on it but for me it was stability when I ran through all 4. When I switched around it was what made me feel the most stable on the ice
Try the quad 0.5. It’s not one really advertised, but closest to a single profile. A good stepping stone to other profiles. Saw you were getting hyperlite 2’s. Ever consider true svh skates. Seems like most people who get them, usually don’t go back to bauer or ccm.
Rocking hyp2 right now, never really look at true as I do enjoy the forward flex of hyper light as I am a very upright skater and helps me stay forward

The cf100? I did a review on it awhile back. It’s “ok” lol. The pads don’t really mold as advertised. It’s decently comfy but nothing special

honest to god i love your vids @BeerLeagueBum and blade profiles are a complicated topic to cover. I imagine there are many ways to skin a cat but unfortunately for me this wasn't it. A rare swing and a miss. Rather than a blind test i would have preferred you to explain what each profile does and how that either benefits or negatively affects your skating style. Leave the blind tests for hockey tutorials :P

Well scientific would be a control group, placebo, proposed result hypothesis and a long term trial. The reason we did it blind was for fun. I think you’re being a bit to generous in saying we have a data analysis lol

I find it funny you take the piss out of hockey tutorial because although Chris is clearly terrible at hockey, Tommy played pro last season and even dropping down a league this year is still getting paid to play (as well as free sticks and skates from being in HT’s videos) what started it all with you guys?
Unsure your question. I take shots at hockey tutorial because of how large they are and all the gear they have access too they just don’t provide much for the viewer. It’s hard to stay objective when someone hands you some gear. You can’t just be like “this is shit” you’re biting the hand that feeds you. What started it for me is I always buy all the new gear because it’s fun. So why not review it. Some will like it, some won’t, in the end I do this for shits and giggles nothing more

I currently use a Zuperior M at 11/16" on some Bladetech steel. Major change over the "box profile" I was using at 5/8". Much more stable, and much more efficient. My knees feel better after games too.
I am curious about the Ellipse profile as well. But either way, ProSharp and Bladetech are a match made in heaven.
It’s crazy once you find the one that works eh. It was night and day.
I use the Ellipse. Its s perfekt and very allround. Fast, stable and agile. I have 280mm Blade lenght and use Ellipse 1 with 3/4".

What I found was that it gave me the stability to be comfortable to be more agile. If that makes sense. Before I would have never thought my edge would hold doing some of the things I can do now. i guess it's about having the right radius in the right spot.

When I went to the Zuperior M, I went from a 5/8 to an 11/16 (per Bladetech's recommendation). When I take them in to be sharpened now, when I tell them 11/16, they usually say "you must be a good skater" ... I'm like "nah, that just works for me.
You've never had a profile? That's insane, the zuperior profile made a world's difference for me.
