- Inflation got you down? Maybe you're thinking about finding a cheaper way of life. If so, maybe you're considering Indiana. It's one of the most affordable states in the nation. It has a little bit of everything, too. Major city? Check. Suburbs? Check. Farmland and small towns? Check. The Hoosier State has a low cost of living, compared to many other places, especially when compared to the coastal states. The state also has cities and towns where there's very little crime. So, if you're looking for a new place to call home, where you don't have to worry about being robbed, and you can afford to buy a home and save some of what you make, watch this video for my eight recommendations.

Yep! I live in south-central IN and it's too hilly here for large-scale farming. Toyota and it's suppliers has done a lot for our area.

Yes, you're right. I hadn't noticed her chosen towns were north of Indy. Lots of quiet, less expensive, easy living places are south of the capital city. Problem is you can't eat the peace and quiet and jobs aren't always close to those great places.
I was born and raised in Lafayette Indiana. Enlisted in the Navy after graduating from High School. Never returned to Indiana. Lots of interesting information about rural Indiana in this video.
I have a friend that transfered from Tampa Florida to Hamilton county Indiana. She didn't realize that she lived in the wealthiest county in Indiana. Housing cost in Indiana, compared to other states is pretty good. Great video.

I am a refugee from Illinois and moved to Indiana. Hobart has been my home now for over 30 years. I moved here because this area has provided myself and my family good paying jobs and a lower cost of living. The city government and services are top notch. Police and Fire are doing a great job covering the city. Close enough to Chicago to visit,but far enough away to avoid the hassles of big city life.
Guess what, there are a lot of kernfields in Southern Indiana. You basically ignored the small towns of that area just like the Indy legislature. I live in Evansville and I didn't expect it to be on the list but there are small towns in the Southern part of the state that would rival your picks I believe. I like most of your videos but having lived most of my life in this region I do take exception with this one. See you in the nest kernfield.

I wouldn't say that I live in Indiana, but I do live in illinois, and it takes me 32 minutes to get to the Illinois-Indiana border.
Just found this video. I think everyone misunderstood the video. "CHEAPEST cities to live in that are fairly safe! Not just safe in general. Expensive doesn't mean safe either. Indy is prime example. Cheap and safe is the title. Non of them are overly fancy but no issue walking around at night either!

Hamilton county Indiana has communities that are consistently voted as the top five places in the nation to live. Not cheap, but better than a lot of other places. I've lived in Westfield and Carmel Indiana most of my life.

I recommend Sullivan Vincennes and Linton. Very nice small cities. Also Farmersburg is excellent and close to good paying jobs in Terre Haute, without living there.

I lived in Terre Haute IN for 40 years and people should know a few things about Indiana. It is a super conservative state, which is nice but it is a "backward" state when it comes to relatively simple things. Western Indiana and the towns mentioned in this post is mostly farmland and very small towns. It is really a safe and comfortable wasteland from North to South with really little to do. Indiana Legislature is only Part Time so not much gets done. There are NO citizen generated Ballot Issues that Citizens can vote on so the politicians control the agenda and Citizens have no real direct control about things. It is 2024 and you could not buy COLD BEER on Sunday until recently! Politicians AGONIZED about it for decades and just passed it on to the next year.
All the surrounding states have some form of decriminalized or legalized Marijuana usage and Indiana "politicians" of both parties only want to "study" the issue but really don't. Meanwhile, Indiana residents drive in every direction to neighboring states and spend millions of dollars in those states for food, gas, lodging. Those states aren't stupid and have opened Marijuana Dispensaries right along the state lines to sell to people who want the benefits of it.
Most good paying jobs were in Coal Mining and Manufacturing, now being closed by the Green Agenda. Manufacturing jobs have largely move to China and Mexico like mine did after 37 years. In Indiana, high wages lead to unemployment unless you are a Doctor or Lawyer. Small towns are like getting smaller as young people leave as soon as they graduate and great Colleges but students leave Indiana after getting their Degrees.
Totally Republican State except Bloomington ( Indiana {liberal} University), Gary which is a Democratic run hell hole abandoned city, and Indianapolis which is Democratic and full of homeless, crime, and businesses closing. Indy is a nice small city but they have constant shootings and murders. Local prosecutors don't incarcerate offenders and let the m back in the streets to commit more crimes.
I think Indiana is in decline, except for North Indianapolis area. Best of luck if you are moving here.

I prefer a town small enough for a boy and dog to walk on the street and have the right of way if I want big city stuff I'll go for the week end 🙂

I really like where I live. Smack dab in the middle of small towns and cities. I live in a no mans land call Phlox, IN. South of me is Windfall and Tipton, West of me is Kokomo. North of me is Greentown and Bunker Hill. East of me is Fairmount. 30 mintues or less I can get to all these towns and small cities. Very cheap in the rural of Indiana. As I own my home, not paying any rent or mortgage.
Frankfurt also has Skydive Indianapolis if you want a rush.

Indiana is one of the greatest states to live in and it has so many hidden gems in it from events, stores, towns etc. Ive lived in indiana my whole life and i still to this day find something new thats pretty cool in this town but i like venturing out to see places. These reasons amongst others is why we have so many people moving here

Indiana is the crossroads of America! Most Hoosiers , 60℅, are moderate in everything; that is important in our way of life and our beloved families. We pride ourselves in commerce, family and Faith. We strive to make our state a good and safe place to live but sometimes we get bombarded from every direction to not be who we are.That stamina is what makes Indiana great!
Is also cost of not living in many of these places. There is a reason costs are less, location, location, location.

Zillow. At the time of recording, the homes referenced were listed on Zillow for the prices I quoted. Home prices have gone up everywhere since I made this video.

Southern Indiana has a lot of good safe towns too I am south of Corydon. And Louisville is less than a half hour away on I 64. Low taxes and about no crime . Well cow tipping and mail box smashing does happen down by Elizabeth ! That’s a place with no gene pool LOL. The county is pretty safe overall the locals will not put up with that city stuff here !

Indiana is cheap because it’s basically a northern state with all the southern state problems. I was born and raised in Indiana and it’s not the kind of place I would ever voluntarily live.

I've found in my long life that lots of small town people in Indiana and Illinois might as well be named Hitler. Racism is rampant in rural midwestern towns, and sad to say, I don't think the problem will ever be solved.

One just within year being assaulted in grocery store and being racially discriminated against by a customer for no reason with witnesses. So no you don’t have to look for trouble if ppl are ignorant and looking to create it all by themselves. I do feel more areas are worse than others and was looking to know which areas didn’t have history of kkk rally’s etc

I'm sorry that you have experienced that. There are places where people of any race would feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. It all depends on who happens to be out-numbered in a particular area or if there is a wide variety of people instead.
These sort of things matter to people from a cultural perspective but thankfully they don't matter to the Lord or in eternity.

Crime in the US has been steadily declining for the last 20 years or so except for a brief uptick during the Covid years. According to data available from the FBI's Crime Data Explorer, the rates of violent crime, robbery, and burglary have decreased steadily and significantly since 1990. And new FBI data confirms previous indications that crime in the U.S. declined significantly in 2023, continuing a post-pandemic trend and belying widespread perceptions that crime is rising. As for the economy, The U.S. economy has shown steady growth since it dropped to unprecedented levels during the second quarter of 2020 due to the pandemic - and then rebounded almost as quickly. A year later, in the second quarter of 2021, the rate of annual growth hit a high not seen since the 1950s. So, please, get your facts straight before making such irresponsible comments.
I got the crime numbers from the FBI Crime Data Explorer, actually, for each individual community. The income and poverty information came from the Census Bureau, and home price information came from Zillow. Just because the economy and crime rates are going well for the country as a whole, doesn't mean that every community has the same experience. If you don't like that, you're more than welcome to make your own video, Jonathan.

No thanks. My number one rule about location is, never live in a state without and ocean coastline. My second rule, don't live anyplace with a flat, boring landscape.
Lake Michigan has beautiful coastlines. Southern Indiana has beautiful hills and bluffs. Don’t sell Indiana short.

Perhaps the Miller area of Gary, Indiana where the dunes are but they are pricey. Lake front property.
First the northern states, and small towns generally are the most safe.
Indiana in general is safe, you'll have your bad apples once in a great great while but that's everywhere in this world.
