That red Navion (N4249K) shown at 5:42 in the video crashed in 1971 killing the pilot and passenger.

Fantastic vintage film! Any idea where the flight training scenes were shot? Looks like Chino, CA or somewhere in that area...

    I noticed it too.
Sounds more like someone on board has a slight touch of IBS. :)

The newest airplane in the video was the 1951 Cessna 170B

boy i wish i'd learned to fly in "this Era...................the Golden Era of Aviation.
so simple. and so cheap. now, you have to sell your first born, for the price of 'learning to fly". and everything is sooooo complex.

drummerfella 55 it is expensive, but much safer and the demand for guys like us who drive anything to guys who fly or pilot boats, we're always in demand, they always need driver's and pilots, cabbies, mailmen, fishermen, if it moves, it needs someone to guide it. Get your licence.

Yeah, but those pilots in the 50's would have given anything for our GPS moving maps.

Navion. They came with 185 to 225 h.p. originally. There have been many mods to larger engines. They had a large 4 place cabin and the early models used a sliding canopy. They were originally built by North American who made the P51 Mustang. Notice the design of the vertical stab looks Mustang like... They flew great and were built like tanks. Because of this, they tended to be slower than the competition (Bonanzas, Cessna 210s, Bellancas, etc.)

8:32 "The elevator is brought up." Should have said that the tail is brought up, because the elevator has to be held down to lift the tail. Of interest, the Private Pilot written back in t951 was a 20 question true/ false test. The flight test consisted of the examiner watching from the ground as you performed a spin entry and recovery. The very first instrument rating in a single engine plane was in 1956. I got my instrument rating in 1969 using only basic instruments, no gyros. Tookoff, intercepted an airway, flew a holding pattern, and then a VOR approach to landing, all on basic instruments only. Getting my CFII was easier. I didn't even fly the plane the examiner said, "oh, I know you know how to fly. I want you to tell me everything I'm doing wrong and how to do it right " I got my rating.
