    Hello Oscar. Another great video, I enjoyed everything in it. Christmas 1971 there was a Davy Crockett locomotive for sale in the toy aisle of Woodward's ( a western Canadian department store chain, sadly they ceased trading in 1993). The 13 year old me thought it would be so fabulous to have that locomotive, but I had no means to buy that Davy Crockett. However, Christmas 1971 I did get some cool Tri-ang/ Hornby items from Santa Claus ( AKA, my dear old Dad). I was able to expand my layout. Dad told me years later he bought my Tri-ang/Hornby Yuletide presents from The Hudson Bay Company department store. Anyway, that Davy Crockett I lusted over at Woodward's in December of 1971 would have been old stock then! In Canada other department stores like Eaton's & Simpson-Sears also sold Tri-ang/ Hornby when I was a boy & tweener. Thanks again for another wonderful video.

      Hello Oscar. Thanks for your reply & kind words. Of the Canadian department stores that I mentioned, only The Hudsons Bay Company is still in business. Toy stores & even some hobby shops sold Tri-ang, later Tri-ang/Hornby back in the day. Most Tri-ang/Hornby items were gone from store shelves by 1974-75. I was on a road trip in 1976 & we stopped over in Kamloops, British Coumbia. I found a hobby shop in downtown Kamloops that still had lots of Tri-ang/Hornby on display. I was into scale HO model railways by then, wasn't interested in buying any of the Tri-ang/Hornby products in that hobby shop. Now I wish I could time travel back to buy up those Tri-ang/Hornby items.

    Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. What can I say, another excellent first class video Oscar. It was great to see your Davy Crocket locomotive. I remember many years ago when I was a little lad, I remember there was a song played on the radio called Davey Crocket, I can't remember the name of the gentleman who used to sing it.? Nice to see this locomotive and it's coaches running on the layout. Great to see class the 37 and the Bristol Castle running with their lovely coaches. I couldn't hear any noisy music Oscar so no problem. Well thank you Oscar for another delightful video and now it's time to have my cup of tea and a toasted tea cake and I shall be watching your wonderful video again. So keep safe Oscar and have a great week ahead. So i will see you next Sunday morning Oscar. 👍🚂

      Good morning Martin great to hear you enjoyed seeing these items having a run on the railway. Sometimes the camera picks up quite clearly the noise of vehicles outside of the house and other times it ignores them altogether. You can only wonder what it must sound like inside the vehicle if I can hear it from approximately 100 yards a way from inside the building, I'm sure it adds there driving experience enormously...
      I've had a nice early start this morning sadly it pouring down. I'm just off to make the 2nd cup of tea.
      Take care.

    I enjoyed the variety today Oscar. The wire joint at the collector plate seems to be a common failure point. It took me several years to discover that with one of my Jintys. The class 37 is such a classic especially in the BR green. David.

    Morning Oscar, well that was a bit of nostalgia, I was 12 when Davie Crocket came out oh did i want one, but alas it never happened. Looks fantastic running around the layout, I've got the song going around my head now "king of the wild frontier".The green diesel electric is a nice looking engine and pulling those maroon coaches it makes a nice train. Yesterday I had delivered "Nellie" but its the new one Hornby have produced as part of their 70th anniversary at margate. I'll keep looking for an original but only when I find the one I want. Thanks again Oscar I know it you put a lot of effort into making these videos, and we do enjoy seeing them. Take care, Eddy xxx

Hopefully just the right original one will present itself at some point to compliment it, amazing the variations they made of this from the 60s into the 70s. Dave Angell has an amazing personal collection of these he has a picture on his website or a few of them. I've included the link below.

    Morning Oscar. I'm impressed that your Davy Crockett still has its lamp and cowcatcher/pilot and that all three coaches have their chimney stacks present. I think all of these items tended to come adrift/snap off in many cases. I always enjoy seeing the "vintage" trains running, thank you! Steve, Lincs.

    Hi Oscar,
    Great rescue job on the two engines with speeded up footage of soldering technique 👍👏
    Just a thought for those of us who wear Station Master’s hats or Engine Driver’s hats whilst playing trains,not me, would a Davy Crockett hat be appropriate here…maybe not. How many of your viewers remember who DC was 🤔
    I was impressed with your homemade storage box, do you have a template, no problem if inconvenient.
    Dodgy video plan made a great success 👏

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  10 днів тому

      Good morning Gordon, I love the hat idea, glad you enjoyed the speeded up footage of the soldering. I had bought a good handful of storage boxes, for locomotives at a show some time ago, they come flat and you have to fold them into shape yourself. When I came to the last one, I decided to have a go at making my own so I traced around the shape of the unmade box on a flattened out old cardboard box and marked where the folds need to be, it's quite fiddly, I've done about four of them now it's quite successful but time-consuming and surprisingly hard to find a piece of suitable cardboard large enough, it needs to be relatively thin otherwise the folding aspect of it doesn't work very well.
      Thanks again.

    Off topic a bit but after seeing the wood load in the tender of that Davy Crockett instead of the more familial coal, it made me start to wonder which firemen had the easiest job between the 2 types of fuel.

    • @robinmathews2446
      @robinmathews2446 16 днів тому +1

      I guess it depended on if the Fireman had to split the logs? Great to watch Buster Keaton doing so in the old silent film "The General"...

    • @marmion150
      @marmion150 13 днів тому

      As coal is denser than wood, and has a higher calorific value ,the fireman would have to use a greater volume of wood to produce the same amount of steam. 11:57

    Hi Oscar, I have always regretted not owning a Davy Crockett or the old time coaches.. Maybe I will still find one that I can afford on-line?
    Isn't it always the way? hiccups occur just as you are ready to "show" something.... Nice repair work though.. I'll bet that a similar repair would have been more difficult to get to, on a newer loco..Ha-ha..
    Marvellous to see these "icons" of model railway collecting in action.. What a nice sound too? I still thing that the actual motors sound better than the "manufactured sound" on chips in locos nowadays? Not as realistic, but "better" somehow? I guess that I'm just too old to appreciate the new tech?
    Thank you for the video... Rob

      Good morning Russell I remember watching a few episodes of Casey Jones as a child, but can't remember now whether it was Saturday mornings or after school television. Also couldn't remember a picture of the Davy Crockett in the track plans book as I just spent a happy 15 minutes looking through it, it's quite nice the way they used little black and white or various items from the range in the corners of the pages. Plan 13 the Davy Crockett appears is quite something at 15x5 ft and the list of components to make it is quite astounding on those great fold out pages 30/31 a massive 41/16 /4. Thank you again for looking in and reminding me of the track plan book.

    The earlier shot of Davy on the rolling road 7:53 shows some resistance between the valve gear and the red cylinder block so that the red part was moving slightly. Looked to still be some unwanted movement after the body was put back on 9:44 ? Could be something a bit tight on either side!

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  13 днів тому +1

      Good morning Mike there is a little movement in the cylinder block even when the body is back on the chassis. It does not appear to be clamped firmly in position by the bodywork its clipped onto the chassis and seems to always have free movement 0341 there is no tightness in the conection rods/valve gear. I'm unsure if this is how it should be straight from the factory or is as a result of wearing tear.
      Thanks again for looking.

      Correct. The tooling for these early sixties coaches was used for one the later Railway Children coaches in the seventies with a different colour scheme. Similar re use of the sixties GWR clerestory coach as well.

      Good morning as John indicates in the attached comment, the mould was used for the later Railway Children sets, it was also used for a short time in the late 1960s as a model marketed in the United States by ATT as a Pullman with turned out in green with a black roof, black lining with the No250 on the side fitted with NMRA couplings. They definitely like to get their moneys worth out of the moulds/ tools once they develop them.

    Hi Oscar... great as always.
    It would be nice to have the Davy Crocett set running with the Lord of the Isles and Caledonian single sets. All similar vintages from the 19th century.
    BTW it's sometimes nice to use a TC flat car behind a rake of Davy Crokett coaches followed by the Old time caboose. I have seen this configuration in a few western films. It gives an excuse to include the latter vehicle as cabooses are only generally used in conjunction with freight and wouldn't ordinarily be tagging along behind a passenger only train. Just a thought.
    Sometimes I use the TC cattle cars with DC instead of the coaches. Their rustic appearance is in keeping with old western style train stock and the caboose works well them.

    A good video on this one Oscar, not a huge fan I’d the loco as I have said a few times in comments on your video how fictional and transcontinental stuff isn’t of much interest to me, one thing with the Davy Crockett though I have noticed is it is quite a popular one for restoration on UA-cam, there are quite a few people who have done videos showing how they have restored this model, it’s overall a nice looking loco, very interesting colour scheme especially with the yellow wheels, quite interesting how they painted them and make them last, I have painted triang wheels but sometimes when I’m running the loco the paint just chips off and I have to paint them again, would be very interesting to hear where the Davy Crockett name for the loco came from, Davy Crockett was a former US representative so from what I can see nothing to do with railways or locomotives, I know there are other names out there for locomotives that don’t have much to do with railways but I do wonder why they chose that name, great video overall here Oscar.

      @oscarpaisley  9 днів тому

      Good morning David thank you for looking in. Great to hear you enjoyed the video. From what I've read in Pat Hammond's book, the name of the locomotive was chosen as there was a popular Walt Disney film around the time called Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier.

    That's the plungers smacking into that first uncoupling ramp, and intriguing they don't hit on the second ramp.
    I'm kind of thinking it might be worthwhile to see where exactly the plungers are hitting; it may be the plastic has warped slightly and catching a plunger collar. Hate to see damage happening to either of them. I'd be a tad worried that either the plungers is eventually going to either split, or the castle will come to a sudden halt.
    Does your 8f do the same? IIR your castle plungers weren't lined up the best and barely touching the centre rail.
    Also almost a bit telling of dublos inability to grasp the modern image. Look at that triang type 3, or even the brush A1A, and then look at the dublo type 2 co-bo. I appreciate the dublo co-co and deltic were shortened, but even they looked like a rather cold plain diecast body. And tbh, it's not a drawback of the body material, the contemporary märklin products seemed to look glamorous enough

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 16 днів тому

      I was astonished to read about the huge amount of unsold Co-Bos Dublo had in stock and the very slow rate they sold at in 1964. Not good for cashflow leading to Hornby asking Triang to buy them out in 1964. Something like twenty years would be needed to sell how many were made.

      @johnd8892 wasn't it an eye opener. I can understand meccano wanting to use the co motor bogie on another subject, and with the type 1 already done (the bo-bo) and the express passenger diesel (the deltic) the usefulness of a middling diesel would be attractive.
      But such a poor subject, with the generally aesthetically pleasing EE type 3, or the Brush type 2 could've used the co motor bogie, even the NBR 600 series Warship could've been a more viable proposition.
      I also think the execution wasn't anything spectacular, it's obviously hollow diecast body with rather chunky cast details. Basically a fairly unappealing model of an unappealing prototype.
      I know we're all well aware of this, but really, dublo meccano should've been a little more in tune with aesthetic appeal. It's almost like product development just skimmed through the dumpy book of British Railways went to the diesels chapter and found the first thing with a 6 wheel bogie and thought we'll make it.
      Which is quite a shame as before the war and immediately after dublo were quite good at picking a prototype to make that was appealing, but it's like they ended up floundering with no eye on what's good.
      By crikey tri-ang were leaving dublo in the dust by the late fifties/ sixties. Britannia, A1A diesels, type 3's, blue pullmans, lord of the isles - everything they were producing just looked good

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 14 днів тому

      @@muir8009 I found what I responded to a question of three years ago about why Wrenn did not reintroduce the Co-Bo and AL1 electric:
      Wrenn likely had access to the Hornby Dublo sales figures for 1964 with only 130 Co Bo's sold out of 3150 made. Even Tri-ang only sold 605 of them by the end of 1966. So Wrenn likely thought not worth setting up for the more complicated mechanism. The demand for these is more recent, now they are hard to get.
      I have seen an interview where Richard Lines of Tri-ang was very scathing of the Tri-ang experience of the CoBo. unlike the Barnstaple.
      Triang did make use of the AL1 body but not the one off Dublo single axle drive system using traction tyres.
      Oscar has several video with the Tri-ang AL1 R.753 running under the catenary on his old layout.
      Not the complete reason for the demise of Hornby Dublo, but an example of the widespread over production far in excess of sales.
      All this over production is now very desirable items, but that did not help them sixty years ago. Can you imagine someone saying to them then to just hold on for twenty to sixty years then the stockroom inventory would be sold.

      Hi, for some reason the leading edge of the pick up Rail on the uncoupling track have decided to pick up a little! When I put the track down, I did not use any fixing screws on the uncoupling ground to hold them down. They are held in place with the rails either side of them. I've put a single screw on the leading edge of that particular rail and pulled it down just a touch problem solved, none of the others on the railway appear to be causing a problem.
