As a 30 year violist, I LOVE playing the viola and the college scholarships that go with it!
It sounds better when you are just learning.
You get to be first chair without as much drama.
You learn to put up with jokes.
    It sounds gorgeous.
You get to sit by the cellos and can see the conductor easily.
You learn a new cleft and learn mental flexibility.
    You're special!
I found that a lot of high school teachers switch their top tier violinists to viola to challenge them if they get bored.

I play violin but I love the viola. As an alto singer, I feel a closeness to the instrument since we’re both always being picked on by the higher pitched people. I know a lot of the jokes are in jest, but sometimes people take it so far that I do end up believing they hate the Viola or alto singers. It’s disheartening and even may make people want to quit sometimes. I wish all instruments were valued a little more

The Viola is every bit as important as violin and cello.
Humans easily fall easily into an “us and them” attitude, especially if one is playing a supporting role.
The violin section needs to be THANKFUL for a solid viola section.

I started playing violin and still do but then I got a viola and absolutely love it.
By the way do you wear that motorcycle helmet behind you for when you change strings on your viola? So you don't snap one and hit yourself in the eye? :-)

I play viola and violin. It depends on my mood. I enjoy playing viola more when I want beautiful depth of tone and color where violin can sound harsh. I enjoy violin more if I want to play fast, high, and technical because that is much harder on viola with my small hands. I’ve played both in orchestras and chamber music and rather prefer the dynamics of the viola section. Violists are more laid back. I feel like violinists are always competing with each other. Viola is way more difficult to play than violin if comparing like for like (the same passage transposed a fifth), but it’s “easier” considering that most viola repertoire is not as technical as violin repertoire.

Unless you're the size of a child, the viola's greater size makes it easier to play.

@@JohanWXC Yes I'm petite, my viola is 15.5" and it's a challenge in both size and weight. Sounds production is harder on viola, bowing technique is different and requires more pressure into the string. You don't get a fast response.

Imagine playing a viola without a modern shoulder rest.

I dabble in both, but I prefer the gutsiness of the viola! 👨🏻

The viola can sound like a cello with octave strings. Octave strings are no longer seem to be available. Too bad.

You still see them around but for violin not viola. I'm predominantly a violinist but I excitedly bought a 16" viola specifically for the octave string use .... then the company that sells the most common ones (disappeared/was bought).
D'Addario Helicore Octave and Thomastik Superflexible Ropecore Octave, these are the two I still see around.

I mean you want low notes? Cello, you want high notes? Violin, who wants to be the middle child right??

The violin is not easier to play than the viola. The viola's larger bridge allows greater space between strings and makes it easier to play the correct string.
