Now I'm looking forward to a video comparing not only a heavier scroll, but also a larger scroll. Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate the nuance of violin sound!
Sounded a little shrill and thin before, and muted afterwards - Listening on Studio Monitoring Headphones. It would be interesting to hear what the Violin sounds like with different weights where the Scroll used to be. Blind Tests tend to be more revealing, as our eyes an preconceived notions can easily bias our conclusions. I play Guitar (Classical, Electric, Acoustic), and find Blind Tests the most insightful way to evaluate what is actually being heard. Thanks
@@__lasevix_ Definitely. I also like Null Tests, when possible. But a frequent sweep would need to be induced into the Violin, like what was done in the movie "The Red Violin."
(1) I like your workshop and how you have your tools organized. (2) Cutting off the scroll (while a valid experiment) is so crazy! I was already subscribed, just don't cut off any more scrolls! EEK!
Go over the top and insert a chuck lead into the scroll. I'm a swordsmith and sword pommels act not only as counter weights but also adustors to the vibrational characteristics of a blade use.
I've seen a violin where the scroll was replaced by a round weight. I imagine if a peg just held weights in place the sound could be varied. The question would be if the scroll should be the same weight on all, differ by model, or if it should vary for each due to subtle changes in wood and build?
I once read that makers of stringed instruments would add weight to either the head or bridge of an instrument to increase the bass frequencies. This video seems to corroborate that.
You should hear what happens when you substitute bridges made of various materials such as brass, glass, copper, ceramic, etc. Also hardwood, plastic, bone . . .
I wonder if metal clip-on scrolls on modern carbon-fiber cellos will create significantly altered sound, just like how denser endpins create enormous changes in the timbre and volume.
I've seen some cigar box fiddles that I swear you couldn't tell the difference from a standard strad copy. I'd be surprised if cutting the scroll off made a noticeable difference!
Carve the scroll into a character/animal like a stainer and put it back on! see if that affects the tone! :D (ps, i accidently showed this video to my mom... she hated it... :D)
@@nancymilawski1048 oh you are right... that would be gnarly.. i really like the idea, in general tho. I'm surprised it hasn't really been a thing in 400 years... especially the way people like to customize things these days.. seems like a low-impact (tone-wise) way to add some character to a violin (especially if it is an inexpensive one)
It was hard to watch the cutting of the scroll, I love the violins not matter what, some with better tone than others but must of the hand made violins are like a piece of art... I give you your 500 likes...see you next Friday...great video...Thank you!!!
It's sacriledge, I know, but every fiddle I've made is scroll free! My strategy is unusual: make a weird fiddle and sell it in a case such that it will spend decades and centuries largely unplayed and therefore remain undamaged ; )
Tbat would be the next thing to try. Instead of cutting the scroll off, make a violin without the scroll on it. Would the better quality of wood make a difference? What about the design without the scroll? Would that make a difference? Removing the scroll is one thing. Building an instrument without is another. That would be interesting to compare: A scrolled violin made the same as the non-scrolled violin. Great video, by the way.
That looks like violin assassination. However, IMO, the sound change does not arrive here behind the microphone and my headphones. (By the way, me too I became Japanese saw fan during a trip to Japan in 1979)
« If we have 500 likes on this video, we'll make more things like this. » Eh... ¿Would I really like to see Edgar _destroying a violin with a saw_ again 🥶?
Ya ya I can tell the different between with scroll and without scroll and i can find the sound not interesting anymore not round and thin. Its loose the quality of the sound. I just know the function of scroll since I was knew the scroll as decorative only😅
That's just a decoration, well beyond the point that holds the strings, so its meaningless. What is wrong with the violin world? Its so full of BS.. Its incredible..
Ahem, Edgar … I believe your perspective on things is a bit biased. You wish to hear less “sound” or “ambience” but truth is, there’s literally no difference (none that human ears could perceive) and there is absolutely no logical reason as to why there should be an audible difference. Yes, a player used to playing a single violin would perhaps be able to feel a slight weight imbalance which could (though, unlikely) cause the musician to play differently. And yes, that musician may agree that they perceived a difference. This, however, does not pertain to your experiments since the exact opposite would also be true. So, sorry, no … the scroll can go … if you want it to.
Holy Moly it sounds much better, deeper, less shrill. Edgar you've done it... now what? Scroll less violins?
come on, she just plays differently,,,,,my tiny finger also influences the sound.
The Violin Madness Has Consumed YOU... FInally... LOL.... Another Great Video...
Edgar’s continual enthusiasm never fails to brighten my day!

“Precious Chinese violin wood” 🤣😂🤣

Would love to see a video where you add weight to the scroll somehow and then glue it back on, and then compare again.
qi gong violin!!! it's chinese already right?
Thanks. 👍
We want to see more Video of this 😎

Edgar you are a Butcher, and I love it! Amazing test. Also, what is this beautiful watch you are wearing now?

That's an interesting question. It's always fun to wonder about which random parts of the instrument you can change for a slightly better sound.
It all depends on what you are looking for in the sound. I have several violins (fiddles) and they all sound different, all good, just different.
Im already subscribed... But I can give you one like.
Do we have anymore courses coming in the Academy?

I cant believe this actually makes a difference, but i heard it... it never fails to amaze me how little it takes to affect the sound of a violin!
hahaha, maybe she just plays better, come on!!!!
@@mkdijkstra4855 in this extremely scientific study, it's obviously that it's not related to her playing (:
what was the piece or wtv she played before the roll was cut?
how much influence do you think change the neck will have on the sound?
I think a lot, since without a neck you can't really play it.
i meant a new different neck, maybe of different thickness, width, etc@@__lasevix_
@@__lasevix_ i meant a neck of different thickness, width, and how will that affect the sound

One step on the road to creating a Hardanger Fiddle?
I would like to see if mother of pearl nuts sound good because they look amazing but I've only seen them on mandolins
I couldn't hear any difference.
Another Friday, another Edgar video 😅…
the psychological effect of not having a scroll has clearly influenced the player, she plays with less emotion than she did before
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته وكل عام وانتم بخير انتم رائعين
Why not use a scroll saw? 🤣😂
By the way Edgar, is Agnese single?... ☺
It happens the same with realy expensive wines. Part of the difference is on the narrative and the imagination. As blind test usually prove.
For Science! 🎉
Titanium! You need a titanium scroll, or at least a titanium screw to re-attach the wood. Haha.
Seriously, I didn't think it was so bad.

It wouldn't of course, so why bother !
Now drill holes to the back of your master violin
I didn’t hear a difference until I played it a second time.
