I graduated high school in 1986, and still remember bits and pieces of the decade. There was some great music, no matter what genre you enjoyed. There were some really enjoyable movies because they did capture the overall tone of the time well, but not many of them were in the running for an Oscar. I got my ear pierced after watching The Breakfast Club at the theater. A group of girls I knew were pretty excited about me getting an earring, and I didn’t have the capacity at the time to tell them no. I thought my Mom was going to kill me! I agree with you about it being a seemingly innocent period of time, however I think at least part of that perception is nostalgia. I have heard similar things from just about every age group and time period. If it is just nostalgia, it was still an enjoyable time.

I sometimes wish I had too. My wife and my dogs are the only thing that bring any meaning. I wonder sometimes what would happen if they were taken away from me.
Because a good economy makes a young life enjoyable. movies, friends, etc. If you grew up financially poor, you'd enjoy life as you grow older. Please do know that life gets tougher too as we have experienced more hurts. But if we can look past that (very hard to do), it can still be done.

Then they left that small town to seek "Career Opportunities" in another town that is most noted for people with their talent. That other town is where the movie winds up. I believe based on the comments that viewers have made, that the looks of Jennifer Connelly, distracted many people from understanding this movie. The distracted me, too. But, the town where the movie ends, is particularly important to understanding this movie. Once you recognize that they should be in that town, because of their talent, the movie becomes easily understandable and one can recognize all the times they displayed their talent.
