One of the best dance scenes ever. The guy who actually did the breakdancing parts was only 16 years old at the time. That's Crazy Legs Richard Colon. The leap through the air was actually done by a gymnast and the rest of it was done by the same dancer who did most of the moves in the Maniac scene, Marine Jahan. It looks so incredible because it took 3 experts to do it. Irene Cara. RIP
Irene, who says you have gone ? Every time your songs keep bringing out your passions coursing right into our bloodstream, shows that you are quite alive within our hearts forever.
Wonderful performance. After all these years, I am still left speechless and in awe. We are watching an angel in flight and a heavenly body twirling. Still a beautiful performance.
Marine Jahan (magnificent musicality in expression and rhythm), Jennifer Beals (drop dead gorgeous) and Irene Cara (fantastic singer) What a unmatched combo!
This movie is super inspiring. Coming from what someone knew to be "the way" and making her dreams come true through passion, belief, and hard work. It's a coming of age adult story. I could not not understand the meaning of this epic tale until I was older. Beautiful choreography, beautiful story. Thank you for posting this.
This song and this dancer chokes me up every time. I took jazz and disco lessons as an adult in 1978. It was a wonderful time to go out to clubs dancing.
For those of us who remember those times, break dancing was not yet a national thing. This film kind of put it in front of the nation at large - just that little spin she did was something most had never seen before and it blew people's minds. People began asking, "What was that thing she did? How did she do that?" It was the film everyone was recommending back then as a must see.
To be fair, Michael Jackson introduced break dancing to the world when he moonwalked on national television around the same time in 1983. I was 13, living in a very white suburb outside of Toronto and by the end of the summer kids were dragging around ghetto blasters and carboard to have dance offs all over the place - it was hilarious. As young teenage boys in the pre-internet age, we went to see this movie for something else entirely!
The most powerful, emotional dance scene I've seen in my adult life. Continues to Flippin amaze and excite, and make me feel empowered! 30 yrs later. That says something
Eu hoje tenho 57 anos estou aqui revendo essa cena maravilhosa que me emocionou na juventude e estamos vivendo no Brasil um calor infernal e só assim foi possível sentir um arrepio kkkkkk. Simplesmente maravilhosa 🙏👏👏👏👏🌻🌻🌻❤️❤️❤️
@@abyteuser6297 Apparently there were 3 or 4 "dancers." One gymnast, another breakdancer from somewhere, Marine Jahan, and possibly someone else. No one person did the entire scene.
This movie and music playing, also inspired me to clinch my first job...on leaving the army. Funnily enough it was also at an Iron and Steel Corporation...in South Africa... Wow...this certainly does bring back memories...I am in my 70's now... And not a day older... Hahaa...
cuanta maravilla en aquellos años.....que nostalgia!! como me gustaria vivirlo todo de nuevo..wonder in those years.....what nostalgia!! I would like to live it all over again...
The movie has had it's detractors from over the years, but there is no denying what a perfect feeling of triumph this ending is. For any movie about a dancer, it really has no equal. For anyone that ever had a dream, they can relate to this.
@IronmanKMSA, I remember seeing this great movie in the theatre when it was released in 1983 and every movie critic I know of universally hated it! But I cannot see what the fuss was all about. Sure, the story and the acting wasn't all that great, especially by Jennifer Beals but I don't think it was meant to be. Besides, it her first acting gig. Adrian Lyne I thought did a good job with the directing considering what he had with the script. But it was the dancing and the music that made the movie.
@@HighAsHeckPriestess I'm not such a big fan of the Step-Up movies. Too heavily choreographed for my liking, like a lot of modern stuff. The dancers appear to be concentrating more on their moves than on their performance, if that makes sense. Flashdance's final sequence feels much more freestyle, energetic and straight from the heart.
10.... I wasn't impressed when it was first released to theaters, but now find the sequence delightful...despite the obvious cuts and substitutions. The raw power and joy of dance is hard to ignore.
They used 3 different people to do this "dance" scene. Marine Jahan was Jennifer Beals' body double for the dancing scenes. Jahan was kept hidden from the press because the filmmakers did not want to ruin the illusion. Alex's leap through the air in the audition scene was done by gymnast Sharon Shapiro and the break-dancing was done by Crazy Legs a MALE break dancer.
Great info - had not heard about the male break dancer. On Blade Runner a similar thing was done though not planned - Daryl Hannah’s gymnast double is a man, he was the teacher for the intended female double and took over when she got too tired.
My mum passed away a few years ago. She was only in her 40s, and when I was a little girl she would always tell me about the time she performed this dance when she was a kid. I love watching this and imagining my mummy 💞

@@katarzynamuszynska5426 I watched it when it first came out...lots of tidbits and trivia given about the movie. Also...watch the scene in slow motion...you will see the different faces...subtly
We all know that Jennifer Beals didn't dance in that scene, and the young lady who received no recognition for that performance made the movie magical. She should have gotten recognition, as that was an incredible performance. She knows who she is, and so do we. God bless her. She will be 60 now, I hope she is still as fit and healthy as she was then.
That song, with her phenomenall athletic, gymnastic modern dance once again gave me cold goosebumps while bouncing on rhythm with smile on my face. Truly fantastic!!
yeah... only it wasn't her doing the dancing, it was performed by dancer Marine Jahan, gymnast Sharon Shapiro, and breakdancer Richard "Crazy Legs" Colón
Many moons ago I was at a hospital with depression and there was a woman there who suddenly started dancing like this. She was amazing. I never saw her again after I was discharged. I do hope she is still dancing.
You have memories like I do. Especially in hospitals. My best friend who is a male nurse became one of my best friends. Those nurses become a part of you. I'm so glad you posted this. The nurses (male and female) are the best part of being in a hospital. Some don't care, but most of them do. I'm glad you had a good experience though. I'm a Gemini and get along well with the entire staff at my hospital. I feel really bad for them though, considering all they have to go through. I bought flowers for the entire 2nd floor at my hospital. It's rare that nice people like you post amazingly nice things like this about people who take care of others. I hope you are doing well and I'm pretty sure she is still dancing. God bless my friend.
In my circle of workers and friends for years, they always thought it was a naff film and song. I heard the song 3 times a day at work when it came out and loved it every time. Then saw the film a few years later and thought, no, it's not a blockbuster but an inspiring little gem of a film! All about the struggles and hard work of making a better future for yourself, by following a dream and seeing it through! I have no doubt this song and film would have inspired some people, even in different fields of work. I still love hearing this song today!
This was such an amazing performance. She had us all trying to dance like that... RIP Queen IreneCara. Love the movie. Flashdance 1980s.... So Kick a$$.Peace
I was about 13 or 14 years old when this movie came out. This song by Irene Cara was just phenomenal! I just found out today that she won the Oscar for "Best Original Song", I never knew that. I was 18 when i went to this movie with my girlfriend at the theatres in Los Angeles on a friday evening in the summer what a memory i am 82 now how the times have passed by, she's still my wife today ❤
I can sympathize with your feeling. But it doesn't add up. This movie came out in 1984. Even if you saw this in 1984 at 18, you would be 58, not 82. Your children might have gone to this movie with their dates. Are you sure that was this Movie? It must be a movie that came out in 1960. Closest to this is the West Side story that came out in 1961
I saw this movie also in 83-84 when I was 18 yrs old in turkey and still in turkey, I am 59 today in '24 how the fuck you get to be 82 and I am 59. One of us is lying bro...
I can watch this over and over and never gets old. This is the panicle of youth, and dreams come true. Even though my dreams didn’t come true, I still am cheering - for everyone else who still, and don’t know, that they can do do it🎉!!!!
Looking at these kind of videos and music makes me thinking that we have lost something very important and turned the wrong way at some point after 2000s...
You do know that the young woman in that still is not Jennifer Beals. She is the French double they hired to do the difficult dance steps and jumps. She never received any credit, whatsoever. Not a happy camper over that.

Wonderful performance. After all these years, I am still left speechless and in awe. We are watching an angel in flight and a heavenly body twirling. Still a beautiful performance.
Как красиво сказано ❤
It was a male dancer who did the dancing, look it up.
@@MrMeadfoot Stop dude. It was French dancer Marine Jahan.
@@MrMeadfoot A male dancer does the spinning on the ground, and a gymnast does the air jump, but all the rest is Marine Jahan.
Songs from yesterday HELD so much MEANING. When you climb the ladder of age, the fragrance of their essence is ever more pronounced.
Ain't that the damn truth. Songs used to mean something, expressed complex emotions. Now it's all about the primitive instincts of the species. Ugh.
Definitely one of the best dancing scenes of all time. A solid 10 for sure.

Que lindo, bendiciones por eso.
Thank you Irene. You will forever be in our hearts and apart of our dance memories.

That move was actually done by a young man, hard to believe but true. I think he was 16 or so.
That says a lot... First time I've watched/ever seen it, and yeah, she's really good.

Jennifer Beals?

Irene Cara, you enriched many lives with your singing and your music. Now you can fill up the heavens with your beautiful voice. Rest In Peace.

A male dancer did most of the dancing.
フラッシュダンス何十回見たかなあ。ブレイクダンスも覚えてダンスしたよ。今の現在でも意味ある素晴らしい映画😂😂😂
The movie has had it's detractors from over the years, but there is no denying what a perfect feeling of triumph this ending is. For any movie about a dancer, it really has no equal. For anyone that ever had a dream, they can relate to this.
Step up revolution is close (the end where the different styles come together to represent the spirit of Miami, and the neighborhood gets to remain)
It's a great scene and probably qualifies as one of the best dance scenes ever in film.

LYRICS
First, when there's nothing
But a slow glowing dream
That your fear seems to hide
Deep inside your mind
All alone, I have cried
Silent tears full of pride
In a world made of steel
Made of stone
Well, I hear the music
Close my eyes, feel the rhythm
Wrap around, take a hold of my heart
What a feeling
Being's believin'
I can have it all, now I'm dancing for my life
Take your passion
And make it happen
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life
Now I hear the music
Close my eyes, I am rhythm
In a flash, it takes hold of my heart
What a feeling
Being's believin'
I can have it all, now I'm dancing for my life
Take your passion
And make it happen
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life
What a feeling
What a feeling (I am music now)
Being's believin' (I am rhythm now)
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life
What a feeling (I can really have it all)
What a feeling (pictures come alive when I call)
I can have it all (I can really have it all)
Have it all (pictures come alive when I call)
(Call, call, call, call)
I can have it all (being's believin')

Make it happen

Did she help cure your depression ....

How can you be 82 if you saw this movie when you were 18?
I can sympathize with your feeling. But it doesn't add up. This movie came out in 1984. Even if you saw this in 1984 at 18, you would be 58, not 82. Your children might have gone to this movie with their dates.
