  • Why Use Beta Blockers in Septic Shock?
In this DigiTalk (I Expert, I Topic, I Minute), Professor Michel Slama, Chairman of Critical Care Medicine at Amiens University Hospital, France, explains the rationale behind using beta blockers in septic shock patients.
Beta-blockers are essential for several reasons:
    Increased Diastolic Time:
They enhance the relaxation of the left ventricle by increasing the diastolic time.
    Reduced Oxygen Consumption:
Beta-blockers decrease the heart's oxygen consumption, improving metabolic efficiency.
    Cardioprotective Effects:
They offer a cardioprotective effect and have antithrombotic properties.
    Restoration of Downregulation:
High levels of catecholamines lead to the downregulation of beta receptors, making stimulation less effective. Beta-blockers help restore this balance.
    Anti-inflammatory Effects:
They also provide an anti-inflammatory effect.
In ICU settings, beta-blockers such as Landiolol and Esmolol are used to decrease heart rate and improve the clinical situation of patients with atrial fibrillation or excessive tachycardia.

ICU Management & Practice focuses on best practice, leadership and management of critically ill patients based on the most recent clinical developments. The journal aims to address the constant need to improve the quality of care to provide 'more for less', and to provide guidance on leadership and management issues, as many clinicians lack specific management training.
Produced five times per year under the stewardship of Editor-in-Chief Prof. Jean-Louis Vincent and a distinguished international editorial board, the journal has become the point of reference in the increasingly sophisticated area of intensive care, emergency medicine and anesthesiology.

Patients with sepsis are generally hypotensive. So, giving beta blockers is a very challenging
