- The design of this kinetic wall art is originated from ‘holzmechanik’s Aurora.
- This video shows how to make the another level wall art using 3D printer.
- This illusive kinetic sculpture was used as a wall art for interior decoration to make an ordinary wall special.
- The wood stain (BONDEX PERFECT) was used to add a wooden feel to the 3d printed parts, and I'm very happy with it.

You sir do amazing work and great videos! Thank you!
I am very very happy, thank you much sir🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Many thanks for your support.:)👍
I am full support your channel sir❤❤❤❤❤❤
Did you make a spring guide for spring from mesuring tape with spring ?
Dr. moon, many thanks for sharing this beautiful sculptural design. I know it has taken you untold hours to create the STL files and I am astonished that you have so freely shared your work.
And now I need your help.
I have completed the printing and assembly but as with @Allan mine spins very fast. It also makes a rather loud clicking noise while it’s spinning and does not reverse direction. Is it the polar orientation of the magnets thats wrong? What can i do to make this work properly?
Hello!
On the front_subRing, there are 6 mm and 8 mm(diameter) of Nb magnets. Please add 8 mm magnet more. So that on the front_subRing, there are one 6mm magnet and five 8 mm magnets.
ua-cam.com/video/_Sorwbpynls/v-deo.html --> This is my recent video. And my new kinetic sculpture has same mechanism as AURORA. From 5:30, there is a scene that can help you understand the principle, so please check it out.
Thanks!

Does the stainless steel tubing have to have 4.5 mm ID? Or will any 8 mm OD tube work?
Thanks for inquiry.
It does not matter as long as the outer diameter is 8 mm.
The inner diameter is only for bolting the tube to the wallMount. :)
Hi Dr Moon, could you explain the interaction with the magnets, I.e. how does the pawl system work, with words or maybe video, I have made but can’t seem to get the reaction correct?
Thanks for the question :)
In the case of REAR WING ASSAY, A magnet with a diameter of 6 mm is attached to the pawl.
This magnet plays a role in always positioning the pawl in the correct position by the pulling force with the magnet directly below it.
Larger magnets (8 mm in diameter) have no relation to the above magnets.
Instead, this large magnet affects the magnet attached to the pawl of the FRONT WING ASSAY.
That is, when the pawl of the front wing comes around the large magnet, the large magnet pushes the opposite pawl into the control gear.
In the case of the FRONT WING ASSAY, Large magnet (8 mm in diameter) attached to front wing also same role as large magnet of rear wing assay. That is, the large magnet of front wing will push the opposite pawl into control gear when the opposite pawl comes around the large magnet.
I don't know if the explanation is enough or not.
If you have more questions, please leave a further comment.
PS. the number of magnets should be adjusted according to the situation.
Thank you.
Thank you, yes that makes it very clear, thanks again
Oops one further question for clarity, which orientation are the large magnets north or South Pole outwards?
@@philreed6457 Maybe you meant about weight optimization.
By weight optimization, the rear wing pawl should point toward the 7 o'clock when rotation is stopped. And 6 o'clock for front wing pawl.
For more information, weight optimization is very important process because it affect rotation time, rotation speed, operation error improvement, etc.
In my opinion (I am also amateur level), weight optimization is a two-step process.
The FIRST STEP is to adjust the center of gravity to the center of the circle(wing assay) while increasing the total weight.
By increasing the weight, the MOMENT OF INERTIA(1/2 * m * r^2) of the wing can be increased, thereby improving the operation error and maintaining the rotation for a long time.
When the first step is complete, you need to perform the second step. That is to adjust the position of the pawl when the wing is stopped, as I said at the beginning.
This is to ensure that the pawls of front and rear wings are in a similar range when the rotational force is reduced and the wing starts pendulum motion.
I hope my explanation will help you a lot in setting up your kinetic art.
Thank you. :)
I am still having trouble understanding it. a video explanation would be nice.
I'd like to read up more about that escapement, which uses magnets, and where the escape wheel and impulse roller are concentric. What is it called?
sorry, but i can't understand what you ask. If you use the part name from my part list (from thingiverse), it will easy to understand. :)
@@housdrmoon sorry I ask too many questions!
The spring guide and control gear are part of the escapement mechanism. What do you call the escapement that you use?
@@xeratol There is no formal name. Just in my case, i called it 'Magnetic pawl system.
And I am happy when i have a lot of questions :)
@@housdrmoon you should patent your escapement! get royalties for it :D
Where do you find a stainless tube with those dimensions? I've searched to no avail.
Hi~ I purchased the SS tube from MISUMI Korea website. Even if you can not reach Misumi, you can buy it at any metal and alloy material store.
David C Roy design and his sculptures
Dr. Moon, I can't find the list of items needed to make this. Any chance I can get an updated link?
Hi~
Unfortunately, due to copyright issues, drawings for this product are not shared.
Thanks:)

From the link above, You can find all drawing files and Part list.
I hope your happy DIY life.
Thanks! :)
Would this system work with wieght rather than a spring.
Hi!
There are two kinds of kinetic sculptures.
First one is that the spring is mounted on a wall.
Second one is that the spring is mounted on the rear wing.
First one can be converted to weight mechanism.
but second one cannot be converted.
This 'AURORA' IS second case.
Thanks~
What’s that vertical floor to ceiling bar? I can’t seem to find it in the Philippines.

How long does it keep spinning after winding it?
Running time is about 30 min. Thanks:)
hello sir, can you please make a video explaining the release of energy from the spring
Thank you for your interest:)
I will consider about your comment.
@@housdrmoon thanks.
also, my i ask,
is there any thing connected to the front disc? or is it just spinning freely?
@@abxxyz6569 It is difficult to explain in word. Instead, i recommend you to watch my another video which use more simple spring driven system for kinetic art. The link is below. From that video, you can find out how spring energy released.

I tried to make the similar kinetic sculpture. As it didnt run that smoothly, so I used electric motor to power sculpture instead of spiral spring. Please check this out. @
I will welcome all kinds of suggestions.
electric motor also good way. But if a motor is used, rotation speed is alway constant. So patterns made by the motion of kinetic sculpture will be simple. So using a motor is the next best thing.
@@housdrmoon Do adding bearings and magnets helps? Is it makes transition smooth?
Hello, where can i get the files to make one for myself? Thank you

How big of a printer is needed? I only have a prusa mini
Prusa mini is too small. My printer(creality cr10s-pro v2) is 300 * 300 mm.
Is there any way you could alter the wings for two parts. I didn’t realize my ender3. V2 was too small until I had printed all other parts. I saw where you had done that with other models. I love your videos. They give much more explanation than any other I have found. I have a cnc router and have tried to make several of David Roy’s pieces too no avail. Keep up the good work and thank you.

Hi.
It is difficult to modify the size of the wings.
However, I have a good idea.
How about making wings out of cardboard?
It would be nice to make the wings from a material that is strong and easy to cut, such as cardboard.
Thank you :)
@@Deltasdfrob1057
Now i just added splitted wings. The file name is ‘frontWing_1’, ‘frontWing_2’, ‘rearWing_1’, ‘rearWing_2’.
Using that file, 3D printer having size of 150mm x 150 mm can be available.
I hope your nice DIY activity :)

How long it will work?
Hi! It runs about 1 hour.
Is it rotate infinity time?
Unfortunately It is not. :)
