    Great discussion! As a drummer trying to learn more about jazz, you certainly won't find information like this on Drumeo

    Even as a horn player this video felt so helpful! Very insightful and gave me some things to look for when I’m soloing! Thank you Adam and Peter!

    There’s an old CD I have with Hutch on it that’s tough to find - Rick Roe’s “Monks Modern Music” - Rick Roe, Rodney Whitaker and the great Hutch. They play “the tune “Thelonious” and Hutch takes the fist solo on brushes and plays the form so solid and swinging - highly recommend searching this out to try and find it

    Here’s a question that’s often on my mind
    How do you encourage rhythm section players to make one step beyond the most basic “change to the right chord on the right beat” scenario? To be able to mark the form
    without having the melody constantly present
    This might not be the right forum for this
    But I reckon you guys know what you’re talking about and can suggest how to develop a basic understanding of how to play as a section!

    This is great!! Love this! Btw, how does one learn to feel comfortable with over the bar line stuff?? Man, I have trouble following "the blues"!

    A wise man once said, "The Drum is the 'Executive', The Bass is the 'Judiciary', The Piano is the 'Legislation', and the Horn Section & Vocal are the 'Citizens' availing themselves of the 'Government'...

    Is that theme tune played by Peter Martin? Sounds like his playing.

    You guys mentioned " time " a lot , but " groove " only once.
    Keezer is a great player but he isnt in the groove on this cut ,, the way Tyner , Albert Daily or John Hicks would be playing a modal 12 bar .
    You guys are making great points but sometimes , you are crutching off the drummer too much. The greatest soloists play outside through a groove . They keep aluding to the groove.
    Celso Almeado and Edu Ribeiro are great Sao Paulo drummers , do you know the differance from Sao Paulo samba feel and Rio de Janeiro samba feel ?
    Mcbride and Allen are fantastic musicians , but , the " two beat " has a little more going on . The " two beat " aludes to the older style people like Armstrong introduced on Hot Fives , and it parallels an Afro Brazilian Ketu Candomble beat OPANIJE , and there is a specific cadence , that they probably got from Second Line .
    It took me a lifetime to make the connection.
    Great work , keep it up , love those " shorts" showing chord variations

    Buddy Rich's lack of respect for the 'Form' diminished him as a musician, with the opposite to be said for Joe Morello.

    I don't know. If you can't hear the changes within the soloists lines, he or she probably shouldn't be playing the tune to begin with. The form should be ingrained in everyone's brains, not just the rhythm section's.

    • @zowohodoho
      @zowohodoho 3 роки тому

      That implies that the soloist has to play over every single chord and that they have to play chord tones though

    • @gcharocks
      @gcharocks 3 роки тому

      @@zowohodoho that’s true. I still think that if you need the rhythm section to tell you where the form is, you shouldn’t be playing the tune though.

      That's not what they're talking about. They're talking about good comping, setting up the melody/solo, transitions, making the ensemble(especially the soloist) sound good. Knowing the form is a given.
