That crazy makeup on Stipe's face is a gesture for their lovingly departed (but still alive) drummer, Bill Berry. Berry had a magnificent unibrow, so that’s why Michael Stipe is wearing one. Berry suffered a Brain aneurysm in Switzerland on tour and no longer felt like being in the band. P.S. When recording this song, Stipe barely knew what he was going to say and just riffed off the lyrics in the recording booth for the first time at 2am in New Orleans and blew off Peter Buck’s head (the lead guitarist’s).

All the quirkiness and beautiful self-loathing of Morrissey but with a good human behind it! I tried in my head a few ways to describe Stipe’s lyrical range and I really can’t. He can do deep, shallow, funny, dead serious, the aforementioned self loathing and insecure, loving, disdainful, and then half the time it’s not even clear what he’s saying or meaning and he just surfs on the vibe which is powerful enough. My wife can’t listen to this band because of a bad relationship but she loves this one and can’t resist it.

I have a very big soft spot in my heart for REM. Started listening to them in the 80s. I think it’s time on your journey you started getting into Tom Waits. He is a one of kind of talent. His career spans many decades and he never does the same thing twice. A true pioneer in American music. I suggest maybe starting in the middle with “gun street girl” or maybe even “going out west”. Or even earlier, “I hope that I don’t fall in love with you”. But he’s a deep dive and there’s no shortage of material. I hope you give it a try. ✌🏻

Some say that REM’s first several albums were their best, but IMO their later stuff was just as good. They were at their peak of musicianship before they disbanded. From politics to love songs to angry rants, Michael Stipe knew how to hit you with poignant lyrics, and they’re still relevant today. From the Accelerator album, listen to ‘Until the Day is Done”

When I first got this album. It was one of my first CDs, and it had this “repeat one song” feature. So I played this track for like a week, straight.
I love how, he NEVER rhymes at any point. He even at one point intentionally uses bad grammar just so he doesn’t accidentally rhyme. I’m normally a hardcore grammar Nazis, but in this case it’s perfect.

Great track, and I'm happy to see you enjoy this one.as much as you did. As Michael said in the video, it's his personal favorite song the band ever did. The album version is gorgeous, as is the Unplugged version, which features a lovely little coda where Michael does a spoken word bit of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone".
There's also an unofficial sequel of sorts called "E-Bow the Letter" which I honestly like even better, but it's got a similar vibe and you might hear a few echoes of this song in there. Hopefully you'll be able to give that a listen too at some point!

Simon & Garfunkel was my first favorite group/duo. Then, it was Commodores. Then Eurythmics. And then it was R.E.M. They were my favorite band for a very long time (until after "Monster" was released.) So... I'm just going to list some great early-ish R.E.M. tracks.
Might as well start with "Radio Free Europe" Then maybe "Gardening At Night" "Wolves, Lower" "Talk About The Passion" "Perfect Circle" "Harborcoat" "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" "Driver 8" "Maps And Legends" "Can't Get There From Here" "Fall On Me" "These Days" "Superman" "Swan, Swan, H" "The One I Love" "Welcome To The Occupation" "Pop Song 89" "Get Up" "You Are The Everything" "Orange Crush" "Turn You Inside-Out" "Low" "Half A World Away" "Sweetness Follows" "Drive" "Try Not To Breathe" "Nightswimming" "Strange Currencies" and "Bang And Blame." That's almost certainly Way Too Many songs, and they've got some great ones from the later part of their career, but this list I've provided hits a lot of the highlights from their first nine or ten records. Enjoy!!

One thing I love about R.E.M.'s music is how certain songs may begin to resonate more with age and experiences. I grew up hearing a number of their big radio hits because of my parents, and then as UA-cam and music streaming sites took off I began to look into the back catalogue of their early indie days. The higher energy, socially minded aspects of that material clicked fast with me. Now that I am 30, some of the more subdued material on Out of Time and AFTP resonate more with the passing of loved ones and the loss of relationships I wish went another direction.

Could’ve sworn I commented on this one, very obscure lyrics, a favorite of mine. Like many bands, I have every Album and REM is one of my favorite bands. Here is a list of songs to choose from. Electrolite, Parakeet, South Central Rain, The Lifting, Leave, Find the River, NightSwimming, Man on the Moon (Soundtrack song for movie of the same name/Andy Kaufman, Fall on Me, Perfect Circle, and oh so obscure, a Syd Barrett cover of Dark Globe (A truly crazy, lyrically cry for help by Barrett to his former Pink Floyd band mates). There is a great snippet of Roger Waters talking about going to see REM, and they played “Dark Globe” at the end, just Michael Stipe, and Mikey Mills coming back out. Roger thought Stipe was just having “a go” at Waters because he was there. 😀

If someone back in 70's told me that in the 80's a band with this sound would be a fav of mine I would have said that they need to do less acid. REM is a band that one might not like at first but if you dive into the albums one would get what they are all about. Rock on Polo !!!

Somehow R.E.M. gets downplayed these days as much as they were somewhat overhyped in the past. The band dissolved before the social media takeover and they have gotten left behind it seems as I find people don’t give them their due respect, How quickly they have forgotten what a great band and how much they contributed to the 90s “Alternative” explosion and evolution of American music. This band also taught a generation of guitar players and songwriters. Peter Buck’s jangly touches and progressions and the lyrical content and delivery by Micheal Stipe are astounding and inspiring. I do agree with Micheal Stipe. This track has become my favorite of theirs. The older I get the more this song longing really digs deep.

A beautiful REM (sad) ballad is (live) "R.E.M.-I´ll take the rain, lyrics" on the youtube Lyricsongs channel. "If this is what you're offering, I'll take the rain". I won't disclose the best lyric, so you can be surprised by it.

Remember owning this album another great track was "Me and Honey" that I don't believe was a single "Low" has a similar feel to this song as well.
