BMW E36 3 Series Front Wheel Hub Bearing Replacement

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Removal and installation of the front wheel bearings also known as wheel hubs on a 1995 BMW E36 325i. This procedure is simular to all BMW's produced from 1991 through 2006 E36 E46 Z3 318 330 323 325 models.
Am gearing up to do my own front wheel bearing replacement on my E30 and this is BY FAR the best and most complete tutorial I've watched. And I've watched A LOT OF THEM. I'm not a mechanic and haven't played one on tv either so I've been studying the crap out of these videos and this guy gave some amazing insights and reasoning behind everything. Please keep making more of these videos!!
Very good in every respect ie, info, quality, comprehensive etc
Very good video! Don't stop doing them :)
I will not stop doing them even thought I did slow down in the past months. I haven't stop but took some needed family time out......
Do you think those 213ft/lbs was accurate? I mean it looks like you barely cranked on that wrench. But yes excellent video quality. Attention to detail is superb.
Thanks for your Video but how can you help me to get the material 3 peace Fixing bearing BMW
All pro mechanics should have this kind of level in craft and workmanship. However, they rarely perform on such level. In fact every time I visited the dealer, I ended up having to rectify their sloppy work afterwards. Annoying things like stuck wheel lugs, oil filter caps torqued down way over their spec and just monkey wrench the job. This DIYer is a shining example of how the job should be done. Its not rocket science. In fact all it takes is some care and dedication. That's why after a dealership service, I ended up having to go through their entire procedure, finding all sorts of mishaps. I have a recall notice on a E90 with vanos bolt problem that require replacing. The bolts are alloy and tends to break causing the engine to stall. Why in the world BMW uses some aluminium bolts is beyond me. I always laugh when I hear people say the German cars are all over-engineered. Perhaps this was true in the older cars, but the new ones are a PITA to work on. They don't even come with a dipstick to check the engine oil. In fact, the fancy over-engineered creations result in a computer checking your oil level and is known to be very inaccurate. In fact, if the electronics went kaput, which happens a lot to German cars, you can kiss your engine good-bye for oil-starving.
Anyway, my hats off to this gentleman for showing the correct way to maintain our BMWs and taking pride in his work.
great comment.
Amen! Totally agree on each and every point you mentioned!
I totally agree with you modern cars sucks a lot more more electronics and not reliable as the old one..
Most Mechanics nowadays attempt to do any repairs as fast as possible
Thanks everyone! your rock
+mybimmerspace why do people put grease before putting the dust cap?? or you didn't you do that?
+goheat77 different type of bearing genius...
+goheat77 different type of bearing genius...
Thank you! It really helped me out
This is one of the best tutorials i've ever seen.
Could you make one for the rear bearings?
OK, I'm five years after this video was posted. But it's the best damn mechanical video I have ever seen. Mate, whatever your name is - You are a bloody champion. Cheers.
Even though I don't have a BMW, I was searching for info on replacing a wheel bearing. I am amazed at the excellent quality of your tutorial. Awesome work!
Great video dude. That looks like one happy car. It really is nice, and so clean! I have a 94 325i silver sedan with style 68's too! I mean the way you explained in detail everything step by step was very helpful. Including the helpful advice. I also appreciated how clearly you spoke. The lighting was also nice and bright. I can't get over how many great tools you kept whippin' out! Your craftsmanship, attention to detail, and neatness is outstanding. Very good video. I wish you could work on my car!
You should coat the stub shaft and the inside of the bearing races with anti-seize before you install it. Your future self will thank you down the road when you have to replace the bearing again and it comes off like butter. Also anti-seize on the axle nut threads. A thin coat of anti-seize on the inside of the rotor mounting face also keeps corrosion down.
Anti-seize ALL THE THINGS
I don't normally comment on videos, but this one is an exception. Thank you so much for a nice lengthy video describing in detail a lengthy process. I own a 2001 BMW Z3 and I changed out both front wheel bearings using your video as a guide. Exactly as shown, and since it was so thorough, I had everything I needed before starting. Thanks again for helping me out.
Please more stuff like this on your channel. Worth every minute spent in the front of the pc. Good job you do in every video that you make. Quality spent time and learning....a lot of learning.
You explained so clear and easy to follow. You're the professional mechanic. Lots of thumbs up. Thank you!
The rim orientation doesnt matter whatsoever.
Nicely done. Loved how you've had the torque wrenches already prepared with the correct setting and a socket. Very clean and a neat job, just how I like to do it!
Good to know you roll the same way!
Thank you very much for an excellent video of correctly removing and replacing critical components. I don't know your background but you have acquired excellent work habits.
Please keep up these videos, they are very helpful.
Great informative video! I have an E28 and I suspect that the process is pretty similar. Thanks for taking the extra time to explain the different ways of getting the job done especially the inner dust cap and the fit issue with aftermarket hubs.
Great video mbs. Perhaps you could make a video on replacing the rear wheel bearing on an e36 maybe in the future?
Yes, I will come through
+mybimmerspace and if its no trouble to you an e30, greatly appreciated
I'll be replacing the rear wheel bearings on my E36 so I'll be doing a video in the not-too-distant future. It needs to be road legal first which means passing an MoT (annual UK roadworthiness test similar to state inspections). Noisy wheel bearings aren't a failure unless there's too much play in the bearing.
Great job and easy to watch! Quick question for you '95 E36 325is M50 I ran a compression test after changing valve cover gasket. My readings have me a little curious. I checked my tester on compressor up to 120 psi and worked good enough. The test came up dry 1-6 as follows 210, 213, 217, 216, 219, 216 and wet 219, 260, 245, 262, 244, 245. Does these numbers seem normal to you? This weekend I will be doing a leak down test. After test, car runs fine and I haven't noticed any oil leaks exceptaround the valve cover before, now it is clean. Any thoughts?
Where did you bought the hub bearing installer...312110 bmw special tool and how much is it. .. did you get it from bmw dealer?
I purchased this tool directly from BaumTools.com. Cost was just over $200.00 U.S. dollars. I am working on setting up a rental tool program through my website in the near future. To work around these BMWs it can run into the thousands, in just tools alone. Not to discourage you but these tools make life a lot easier with professional results.
Hello. I recently changed these hubs at home, but unfortunately it wasn't so colorful at my place :( I also bought SKF, only mine did not have a groove and I did not pay attention to it and tightened what caused that the dust cover had nowhere to hide and the hub did not want to And here I have a question, if the hub has no groove, do you need to remove the dust cover before installing the hub?
I have the same model BMW I have a problem that comes from the back of my car if I move back or forward it makes a crunching noise and also I feel it as well like something getting caught in the diff or wheel any help plz
This video is the by far best and most helpful on the subject
Good video, but marking the wheel to the rotor is meaningless. Your wheel/tire is balanced when you install the tire.
hmm, I think I'm gonna do this some time, maybe this week but can't you put on the new wheel hub assembly by taking the same 46mm socket and hitting it with a mallet to walk it on?
Hi man good job I like it but where did you get the tool to press the bearing ?
And also the puller ? Thank you
What do you do if u get an aftermarket hub and it doesn't have the groove for the ring on the back of it!?
Hi! What is the name of the threading tube that you use to install the wheel hub? I have to make this work on my e36. Greetings from Chile! Note: put all the tools used please.
+Viktor Sepulveda 175 bucks
Hello where do you geht this special tool ? Or what is the name of the special tool
Best hub video I've seen 🙂.. thank you for taking the time to Post
Shouldn't you put anti seize before remounting brake rotor?
One thing i don't understand is why you pull the sensor of if your not changing the pads?
Incredible tutorial. I love it. Thanks!
Man .. you are a mechanical maniac like I am. The attention to detail, the precision and the lighting for this video. I am in shock, in a good way. One of the best DIY for BMW I have ever seen, getting ready to watch all your videos now. BTW .. what lights are you using ?
Having the right tool means the difference between wrenching as a nice pastime and hating the freaking guts of your old piece of crap car. I would think having a small lathe will open up huge possibilities of making your own custom tools instead of paying and arm and a leg for BMW Tool 2134ADS for front hub doohickey that you would maybe use twice?
Nice video, thanks for taking the time!
The possibilities are endless with a lathe, many of these tools can be made with one.
Thank you for the great angles and video!
You are very welcome
perfection, I agree very nice
wow your car looks so clean, Guess it doesnt snow where you live :D
Nice video! can you tell me why you don't like using sandpaper for parts cleanup? I get that there may be silicon grit to be sure to remove completely, but is there more to it than that?
Sandpaper can scratch the surface and may leave behind residue.
dam good job well spoken and clear! thank you!!!!!!
Very good video unlike the other garbage b.s on here!!
This bmw tool is pussing inner race of the bearing ?
..where can I buy the tube you used to put the hud....Donde puedo compra la herramienta para meyer el bering delantero...
www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-device-83300491905
wow, lot of work!....great video!
These videos are great man, pls keep posting!
This friendly guy never answer me back, but for all those who's has a BMW Z3, is exactly the same process, I do it on mine... thanks anyway mybimmerspace... u r awesome.
Just wondering if this procedure may be close to the same on a 2006 325i ?
Lee Paris Yup BMW hardly ever changes design and if so it’s slightly
waoo, this video is top dollar. Nice and orderly work and best view angels. And your voice is easy listening because your words are wisely picked. Thank You Very Much.
I have a question man, I did this job and after a while now my bearings are wobbling. I noticed because I went to change my rotors and discovered that when I spin the rotor it periodically brushes the guard behind it. Any suggestions? Can I repress the bearing in without damaging it or is there another strategy for re-aligning it on the vertical? Thanks for all the help.
excellent and thorough tutorial. i like how you gave us your personal advice/opinion . priceless. gracias amigo!
Thank you for the detailed explanation and clear example of the remove and replace. Great camera work, vidio presentation and attention to detail. Look forward to more of your workmanship.
Nice video! I will be attempting this on a 2006 BMW Z4, I hope it is similar enough! You mentioned a distinct preference to steel wool over sandpaper for cleaning mating surfaces, could you briefly elaborate on why? I am guessing that leaving silicon grit behind might cause wear issues, but won't careful cleanup address that?
Going wayyy to easy, its a payed bearing actor.
Your are beyond thorough when performing these maintenance procedures, your cam timing video was a major help, thank you for the old videos and new. If your ever in Wisconsin and feel like going for a whip in a turbo e36 feel free to hit me up.
I seen a lot of these DIY videos and I must say - your videos are well prepared and well planned. I thought to myself before watching this video "I´ve seen and done wheel hubs, but maybe I´ll pick up some tricks from this guy"... After watching this video, I´ve picked up a lot of tricks and "best practice"-methods... You seem to go the extra mile by cleaning surfaces and marking positions. I like it! Looking forward to see more of your videos in the future! Hope you see this comment and that it might inspire you - this video inspired me though :-)
Hi there, quick question, the front disk protection dust cover is loose and rattling on my BMW e46, would i be able to remove it and replace with a new one if i took the rotor off?
kind regards John
Thank you very much for this well made video. I decided to replace my bearing myself in order to save some money. I never imagined that the hardest part of doing this job would be finding a 40mm socket for the stub nut. I got everything in order including the pullers; I thought I'd swing by the tool store on my to my garage to quickly grab the socket; NOPE! I have gone everywhere with no luck.(Yes I went to Sear and Harbor Freight) I finally had to order one from the internet. The realities of getting things done. I still think I might save money when all is said and done though. So thanks again.
A little tip is if you have the race without the lip, take a dremel tool and score a notch in the race that goes about halfway down through the race and then give it a good shock with a cold chisel. Should just crack the race and drop right out. Just be careful not to knick the stub shaft
This is by far the best video showing the most correct way to do each and every operation throughout this process, I have seen so far. I mean, you even wear the correct gloves for each stage, haha! Great video; If you want it done right, do it yourself.
How many tons is this puller rated at?
Rarely good DIY-Video. Perfectly explained in all Detail needed! Helped me a lot doing my first bearing replacement on my 328i. Thank you so much for this great video!!
Great Videos. I just did the hubs in my 1996 318i based on your tutorial. very doable when you know what you are getting into after watching your vid. To note, the hubs came out without a puller, and went on with out a press which made it that much faster and easier. They were tight but easily slid off and the new ones on just with hand pressure. Same with the races that were left behind. weird eh? Anyway, thanks again.
Very Clear Video Visually and Description. You would be a very good Trade Lecturer. Really enjoyed both the description and the Tools you used. Look forward to more. Thank you. Cheers.
Thanks for the vids! Looks like SKF changed designs a few years back to either eliminate the rear dust cap or save $ or both. Any experience with the new design?
how is this tool called to put the hub in?
Why you stop making videos ?
Wow... this is probably the best wheel bearing install video i have found so far. you rock sir..! Subscribed!
What happened with you? Are u OK?
After so much fine work you would not want to drive the car on roads with slightest dirt :) , In fact most cars these days are not made to be driven on dust and dirty roads. Good tutorial btw.
I've never seen a car with a suspension that clean and rust free. You should do this on a car from the real world.
Brilliant video, thank you for this. I would suggest replacing the dust shield every time the bearing is replaced as preventative maintenance. The area around the 3 little bolts corrodes and it’s a pain - either the bolts needs washers to clamp the shield solid or a new shield has to be cut to slide over the hub. In the UK, the shield is about £20 so well worth doing when the bearing is out. Again, thanks for the vid and the clear, careful explanation.
Why you have so many wires going to the hub area?
My E36 just has pad wear sensor and abs
Inner race comes out very easily with some heat. You do not need any pullers.
Heat can be very persuasive, no argument there.
Excellent presentation, clean and precise work, it helped me with purchasing the special tools needed, thanks for sharing!
Marking the rotor? Wtf?!!! Lol
Very good video with a professional ethics, thanks. This man is a Master.
Where did you buy or get your bmw wheel hub bearing tool,??? Thanks
These are the best DIY videos I have found anywhere. Thank you so much! I hope you record a rear wheel bearing replacement some time soon.
My comment was not triggered by your video skills, witch I don't have!
I wish you did more tutorials
Tks a lot!👍
Hello does this work with e46 m3’s ? I would think they are similar right?
helllo plz tell me how is the tool called that you use to put hub back on in 28 minute ty :D
Do you have video for the rear hub
Is it the same procedure with the 6 series? Bmw 645, 2004mod
Watching a master at work ! . If I had all the tools I would do it myself after watching this , thankyou.
Aftermarket hubs without the groove for the dust shield have a shield built in, integral with the inner race. With these there's no need to retain the dust shield at all.
If all of us got together we could build just about anything, I will definitely check into this the next time I come across one. Thanks for the heads up, your input will not be looked into.
So before installing a hub without a groove, you must remove the dust cover?
Thanks for a clear and thorough video, btw how do you keep those calipers looking so clean?
Great Video and Instructions, I will be doing my daughters nxt week
Use locktide for dustcap bolts..i do ,,it helps..great video btw
yeah and thats how you do NOT do it.......cheers from germany!
Great Video thanks. Can you tell us the P/N of the install tool and where did you buy it?
I have used this it was amazing you should be paid to just rebuild e36s on UA-cam
I wonder how this king is doing
Superb video and wheel bearing replacement done my a pro. Thanks

Great video sir, mine just started making a wirring noise, will do mine soon.
