Tarantino once called DeNiro the greatest movie maker of all time, on the basis his collaborations and output was unsurpassed by any director or actor, and I think that’s right. Godfather 2, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Deerhunter, Casino, Jacknife, Ronin, Mean Streets, 1900, Once Upon a Time in America, The Irishman, Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, The Mission- bloody hell it goes on and on. A true legend.
Heat, Brazil, Jackie Brown, Bang the drum slowly, Angel Heart, Cape Fear, Awakenings, New York New York. And a great contribution to comedic films with Analyze This and Meet the Parents…
A sparkling resumé !
Plus "A Bronx Tale," "Meet the Fokkers" and one of his best first films, "1900."
@@37Dionysos The Untouchables, we forgot that
Some people discredit him because of his paycheck work the last 2 decades which do not count as far as I’m concerned. Same goes for his politics. The man has a gold standard filmography.
How amazing of him to fly from NY for and interact with the younger generation giving such amazing advice and answers to his questions. It's obvious he is a shy guy and is so humble. For me, Heat is one of my favourites films of all time. A true legend, how lucky for those there to be in his presence.
He did NOT fly in "just for this"...weren't you listening?...he had a number of events to attend so he "worked it in".
@@lt.columbo5919 Oooo Handbags! Did someone spill your milk sweetheart? If YOU read my comment, I did not say he flew in just for them. I said "How amazing of him to fly in from NY" You insinuated, however factually he did fly in from NY. Whether he had other things planned is irrelevant. Go troll someone else.
Heat is a phenomenal film, it’s among my favorites as well. Terrific conversation/interview. When Robert De Niro speaks, I am always interested in what he has to say. I’m so glad we get to enjoy this piece.
100% correct!!!
Robert De Niro for me is the greatest screen actor of all time. His versatility is unmatched and how he can get in and out of character is something to behold. He's a genius at his craft. He really is.
I think he's overrated. Pacino is much better.
@@clivet3252 To each his own I guess. But to humour your point. Pacino is also a great actor. One fo the greats toot. But at some point he was playing himself as a character as opposed to being in character. His character in Scent Of A Woman is the same as his character in Devil's Advocate & Any Given Sunday. And lets not forget the Pacino monologues we got through-out the 1990s drove that home. Not to take anything away. He's an outstanding actor. Very charismatic & engaging on screen and really fun to watch too. But Robert Deniro for me is the benchmark. He can play characters. His Meet The Parents character is nothing like his Analyze This character. His Casino character is nothing like his Cape Fear character. For me Pacino ended being like Leonardo Di Caprio and Denzel Washington. Guys who put themselves in the role. ("Denzel as...." as opposed to "Denzel is..." I hope that makes sense) De Niro has this chameleon like ability to hide himself in his roles. His ability to switch from comedy to drama is also something to note.
@@Gemini3K Both of have roles where they repeated themselves; watch Pacino in Frankie & Johnny. Watch him in Donnie Brasco. Come on. As far as character acting goes, is Daniel-Day Lewis. Edward Norton is another great if only he received/chose better roles
@@clivet3252 You put Robert De Niro in a tumble dryer... You get Al Pacino!
@@ashrafbadreddine9470 Daniel Day Lewis is a great character actor. I agree. Ed Norton is underrated as an actor too I agree there too coz he can do drama and comedy to great effect. Like Pacino and De Niro. Daniel Day Lewis I'd love to see in a role where he isn;t wearing some sort of mask and I'd love to see how he does comedy....in and out of character.
Robert de Niro does it differently
He has no frills
he is completely genuine
and sincere
basic about that which is at hand
the people
the material
Yes, he expresses himself down to earth in a gritty manner which encaptulates
energises
and just blows the audience away…
and the imagination does the rest

Another underrated classic in "Midnight Run". Best "buddy movie" of all time.
Fistophobia!
Midnight Run is being remade. Robert is producing it.
@@chriswhamilton I would say a remake is a mistake. Charles Grodin is also great in that film, very funny.
@@chrisf7189 that would be a pointless remake. No topping Grodin/De Niro performances or chemistry.
Charles Grodin brings out the curmudgeon in me
What a privilege for these students to meet one of the biggest names of Hollywood.
His message is really very simple.
BE YOU
BE UNIQUE
STAY TRUE TO WHO AND WHAT YOU ARE.
De Niro is the greatest actor this world has ever seen in my opinion, but this interview really showcases the disconnect between how unbelievably focused he is as an actor, yet how awkward and speechless he is when it comes to talking about his craft. He doesn't really answer one single question here in a coherent and fluid way. At first, I thought he was just dodging the questions, but after a while I realized that he really doesn't know what to say. It almost explains why he's such a brilliant actor as its the only avenue he has to express his emotions and feelings.
De Niro is better at saying other people's words, but he is a sincere man who cares about the world.
The "Hark I hear the cannon roar" joke was a gem moment. Love how pleased he looked with himself after that haha. Smacking his lips.
Didn't get that Joke, though! Does it mean , the actor got so obsessed with his line that he forgot the scene?
He forgot the cannon fires before his line

Will all respect! Robert DeNiro is the greatest Man of the Time. Is quite example and model for us . I guess people need to learn , from such people like Him . Being today a Fella like Robert, isn’t easy.
I like Bob because he's modest, honest and straight to the point. He's also someone who isn't a big fan of the whole celebrity culture and generally prefers to stay out of the limelight.
i love how we all expect these larger-than-life answers, but he just sort of shrugs unassumingly, explaining his ideas with little eloquence. I think Robert DeNiro teaches us to stop overthinking things, really.
I'm sure were he younger and felt like he had to philosophize like all young artists do he would, now he's matured and wise and knows that brevity is the soul of not just wit but Art itself. Keep it simple, silly. It works for many a medium.

Although The Irishman was a return to form and hopefully Killers of The Flower Moon. I don't think it justifies some of the awful comedies he has done recently.

De Niro would make a great Charles Bukowski character, he's in the right moment of his life to do it.
Absolute icon, but so humble and down to earth person. The greatness didn't get to the heads of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, great human beings and amazing artists, incredible of their craft. We should not just enjoy their movies, but also listen their advices and life stories. Also looks like De Niro is enjoying himself and feels comfortable during interviews and talk shows in UK.
Icon? LOL.. these are your icons? Hollyweird false idols? They get paid millions to play make believe… work in a self congratulating industry that gets above its station spouting woke hypocritical political BS .. they are the worst of society.. soldiers & Nurses & shift workers (that produce our goods) etc are my 'icons'.. instead of watching this guff try the out of shadows documentary.. there's your icons LOL
It took both of them long enough to come around to making public appearances as they were notoriously "camera shy"?? Talk about an oxymoron lol but I can understand the difference between playing a character, their personas, and the actual person. And yes, they both always come across as genuine and unpretentious guys who never fell or bought into the "celebrity" title and game
He is the only actor i watch all of his movies

That hark I hear the cannons roar joke was great and the way he told it...that was brilliant, that was De Niro in character right there.

Filming in Greece and pops over to England to do this interview, what a legend. Blessed to have him on the same soil as me.
The best part is towards the end, when he talks at some length about Brando, and then Elia Kazan.
Great conversation, fair play to Mr Deniro for engaging so much with the audience and thoughtfully answering their questions.
I love this man. He's the best actor all time! He seems like an awesome guy too. No one is touching his resume ever. The Tom Brady or Michael Jordan of acting!
He has the best resume probably but Daniel Day is the Muhammad Ali of acting for me. In fact Brando is above DeNiro talent wise just a little, never seen Bob give a performance as emotionally charged as Last Tango
@@rossl5908 I fully agree Daniel day is the most talented actor of all time if he did more films later in his career his resume could over take deniros. All his answers are so simple and down to Earth. Basically he is saying live by the heart, follow your passion and be true without any other considerations, no fame and fortune bs. No need to dye your hair blue to be creative, only do it if you feel it. Life is real and so is he. What a genius.
Yep, as quite a few of the comments suggest, the interview didn't go well. Why not? Early on, James did well to tap into De Niro's sense of humour .. just snippets of it. He did well initially because the American sense of humour is particularly difficult to tap into, especially for a Brit and especially, I imagine, in the context that is the Cambridge Union, where the grey matter works overtime and, dare I say, the heart, feelings and emotions are trained to take a back seat. I was willing James to grab those moments of humour to lead De Niro into story telling, not necessarily about his films as such but about the relationships that are/were special to him, e.g. with his family, and about being Italian American, etc. De Niro really struggled to articulate intellectually, so jump to the feelings and emotions. How does he feel about being an Italian American? About his role as a father? He's a humble guy, a big kid really and began to respond well to the girl in the audience who goaded his a bit about his 'one-liners'. She tapped into his sense of fun and humour. The intellect in that room is seriously impressive and holds so much potential, but the skills of empathy, of quickly sensing an interview going down hill and instinctively knowing how to rescue it, need some work. Guys like Parkinson made it look so easy.
In a nutshell - it was a wasted opportunity.
As I commented elsewhere, De Niro is very old (his hearing isn't great, his memory is failing) and has never been a great interviewee - I haven't seen a single interview of him being fluid, confident and gelling with the interviewer as say Tom Hanks does (please let me know if you have). As smart as he is he's always been a bit clunky and shy even 40 years ago.
Sure the interviewer is inexperienced but what the hell are you expecting, it's a student union meeting!!! They're all kids!
@@tb-cg6vd they're not kids. They're students who presumably are required to be articulate. Barely a single person managed to string together a coherent question.
@@jamespotter3660 your presumption is incorrect; being articulate isn't a requirement to be an undergraduate at Cambrisge University or any other university that I'm aware of, please let me know which do. Then tell Bob he should have gone there.
@@tb-cg6vd so the country is fucked if they're the elite of their generation. Not sure if Robert De Niro couldn't hear them or just couldn't work out what the hell they were on about.
