I bought a flute and am now self-teaching it to myself, I had a lot of problems with getting a tone, and this video helped me a lot! Now I can get the low and the high tone when I just have the "head of the flute" and close it with one hand, before I was not able to do that.
I will watch more of your videos, I like them!

Tip from my teacher: you can place a tiny square of blue painters tape on the bottom of your flute where your right thumb should go.
That gives you a marker to help you get used to where you should stick your thumb.
I just started learning and I had the opposite direction issue on my right thumb; I was placing it too far down the flute.

Thank you for your videos, they're really helpful and fun. I decided as an older adult to start the flute! I play piano and recorder, but the recorder seems to send my dogs right out of the room :), especially the higher octave. Working on getting my embouchure to be consistent, and also learning the C major scale on the flute, but even with belly breathing and good posture, air seems to run out after 3 notes. Do you have any advice? Thank you!

Great Tatiana I’m a self teaching student and each video helps me improve almost immediately! As I don’t have a teacher it’s easy to get upset if I don’t see any improvement. I really have difficulty with the second register!! I don’t know if it’s normal after only 6 months of practice... anyway you’re a great teacher, thank you!

These tips were ever so helpful, thank you! I noticed that I have my fingers that are not actively playing quite high above the keys. Is that also a 'bad' habit and if so any ideas on how to correct it?

When I decrescendo completely tailing off a high note say Bb from Forte to PP, I always sound really breathy. Even with a really tight stomach! The note starts clear and beautiful, but I can’t figure out what’s happening....any suggestions? Love your site ......and your playing!

Hello again Tatiana ! Great vid, like always ! I have a question for you please : would you rather recommend to practise every single day (like I do) or to take 1 day off a week, like many advocate ? The arguments therefor are that your fingers and brain need to rest (but they have nightime for that, IMHO), and that it might somehow be "good" to "miss" the practice (I can't see the point, and am quite addicted).
If for some reason I can't practise one day I feel quite frustated.
What is opinion about that ? Thanks a lot for your vids and your answer, en lots of goof vibes from Holland ;)

Coursera has a great free course--"Learning How to Learn". Great information and advice on learning in general (short spoiler: better to practice a new skill frequently e.g. ten minutes every day is better than 20 minutes every other)
