Note:
After this video was made I needed to clean the carburetor in a sonic cleaner in order to completely remove the Mid-Range pulsating that I wanted to get ride of.
The carburetor is basically sealed which is probably due to carbon emissions requirements and there are no high speed, low speed, or other float needle adjustments that can be performed.

KAWASAKI FR691V - surging or rough rpm even after cleaning carb, or fuel pump, or coils or plugs? replace BOTH intake manifold gaskets. This is a known problem with this brand and model engine. Apparently the gaskets are prone to heat soak problems. I have the same exact engine. Changed everything and still would not idle properly. here are the symptom conditions> cold start (literally engine is cold)...idle is fine...at all rpm ranges. However, once the engine heats up after about 10 minutes, the intake manifold gaskets (one or both of them) is no longer making a good seal and a small amount of air is sucked in. Since this is air AFTER the carb fuel air mix, this causes the engine to SURGE...it goes lean, then the governor adjusts the carb, smooth back out and then rebounds back into lean. This will continue even into a higher full throttle but is harder to hear and feel as the small amount of air isn't as significant when the rpm's go up. Another thing to watch for and to do at least once a year on these engines is to check all the main head gaskets. A simple compression test can do this, but you will need a intake blocking plate to perform it properly (with leakdown test). When I first received my mower, I checked all the bolts and found two were not properly torqued and loose on the intake manifolds..and one cylinder head was also not properly torqued. I also check spark plug gaps and coil gaps. It's quite common that factory quality control escapes happen and this can drive you nuts trying to figure out why your machine is not working correctly. So check EVERYTHING when you get your equipment. It will save you alot of headaches down the road.
I watched this video 4 times in detail. I took my time. My mower ran 5 times worse and constantly cutting off. This video worked well for me. Will add one point to the video. Get a new gasket.

Bought this for my small back deck in the Eastern Sierra. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN We get A LOT of HEAVY snow so I was a bit skeptical but it was worth it! After the first storm of the year this has exceeded expectations! It throws snow very well, even 10-12” + that said the more it piles up the harder it is to maneuver the machine. It is exceptionally light weight and overall exactly what I was looking for. If you have a large amount of snow and a lot of area to clear, you may consider something with a drive engine to help maneuverability, but for decks, second stories, roofs etc, you can’t beat the light weight to great snow throwing ratio. Side note, the chute rotator is a bit flimsy and it initially didn’t seem to work, after a few uses it seems to have loosened up.
I have a Hustler with the same engine. It's had the same little surge at mid throttle since new. Only does it in park with no load. If I am driving around without the blades engaged I never notice it. I have around 500 hrs on it now. Basically I have been told that it is pretty normal for these engines. They are tuned to run at higher RPMs. Thanks for the video!

The carbs are very good but the air filter stops up very very quickly and lots of dirt going into the engine and destroying the rings
The Heavy Duty upgrade kit is a must in dry dusty areas 😊😊

You should have sprayed Carburetor cleaner through all the holds in the carburetor to make sure all the enter fuel pathways were clean. All said it looks like a nice carburetor and easy to get to. Thanks for the video. What kind of lawn mower do you have? Is it a zero turn type and what is the name and model number of the mower.
You are correct. This was a tough one but, I did get the midrange problem solved.

I have had this for several years. You can see my earlier Gravely reviews, old change, blade sharpening, and maintenance. I did not mind pulling the carb, I have been working on my own equiptment all my life.
Hi David, I just bought a mower with the fr691v engine. The upper hose connected to the carburetor that you mentioned on the video as possible vacuum hose is just hang loose connected to nothing. Could you give me a clue as to where it goes? Also I did a carburetor job, have fresh gas and the more runs great when it's above 60°. At 50° it will not start. Any clue on that problem? Thank you in advance.
The carburetor hose runs up to the top of the gas tank between the fill cap and the drink holder. The left fender has to come off to reattach the vent line if needed.
Both Gravely and Kawasaki have downloadable parts and service manuals.
I have not had any issues and I do not want to encourage throwing parts at it so just check the easy stuff. Inspect the air filter, replace the fuel filter, check the fuel pump for function, check the spark plugs for fouling or lean conditions, check the valve clearance, and look for correct installation when removing and reinstalling anything.
Of course, the manuals might give clues too.

I have the same Kawasaki 23 hp FR691V . I replaced the fuel pump and im still having problems. It will start and immediately shut off . Then messing with it so much i think i have the gas line and vacuum line Crossed . Frustrating because it will fire up and run on the gas in the bowl if i unhook all the gas lines
Only a guess but,could be the solenoid under the carburetor. They do mess up.
You can test it or remove it completely and put a carb bowl screw in there, like in older engines.

Check fuse one of em is for the selenoid
I just cleaned the carb on my 2015 S240 John Deere(Kawasaki FS600 surging/ starting issues) and found black gunky stuff in it. The fuel and vent hoses are disintegrating. I had this happen on a two year old John Deere diesel tractor.
What I found in mine was that I had to go back and clean the carburetor again. The second time, not shown, I had to keep the carburetor body submerged in the Ultrasonic cleaner through four max cleaning cycles, changing the hot water out each time.
I think the PVC hose at the top is feeding crap into the carb and causing the tiny holes at the top to become clogged or built up in such a way as to interfere with the normal operation of the carburetor. Aren't the EPA laws great?
Fuel caps are bad about rubber coming apart a falling in fuel tank
I would like to see exactly where the spring on the governor went I just rebuilt one and I'm having problems and I think I hook the governor up wrong but I couldn't see in the video exactly where it went cuz my vision's not that great
The Kawasaki engine manual should show the orientation. Kawasaki web site also has manual to download.
where does the other end of the vent hose go? One end to the carb.
Well, the vent line is very long and goes to the top of the gas tank fill neck. The vent hose connection on the gas tank is up by the cap and is hidden i.e., under by the fender.

mine is surging like a mofo. why didn't ya clean out the jets? Mine has about 200 hours . I bought it used at 180 . I'm wondering if this is why the previous owner sold it
I just had trouble taking the carburetor apart so I just sprayed it opt and my problem was solved.

@@A_Renaissance_Man I got my main jet out no problemo. It was wide open. It turns out my choke needed a very slight adjustment
I have the same unit and just removed the bowl only to spray some carb cleaner in. Solved the problem of not starting but now the bowl is leaking fuel. Should i take it off and try to re-seat the gasket or could it possibly be an issue with the solenoid?
The two places to look are the bowl nut/solenoid, make sure the gasket is in place. And the second is the bowl gasket itself.
I cannot remember at the moment but, some carburetors have a sharp bowl top that is sealed with a thin o-ring.
Those checks can be made without removing that carburetor but, I would checking it on the bench. Good luck and I hope you fix it.
@@A_Renaissance_Man thanks I just pulled off the bowl and the gasket for that was very loose and had a loop in it for lack of a better description, it kind of sagged down into the bowl at one point. Seems like it's stretched out too much, I'll try replacing. Thanks for the input!
That solenoid is useless... anti back fire solenoid totally useless, it doesn't matter if it's on there or not!
40 hours no since performing surgery like-minded people know what is going on by pass that stupid solenoid put shut off valve ✌️
Do you have a part number for that carburetor?
Yes. The Walbro 26B part number is 15004-0985. I think they are ridiculously overpriced. The last time I checked they were $130 + S&H. I would buy a cheap knock off as a backup and then diagnose and clean the original and then the original will be ready as a backup to the cheap one.
@@A_Renaissance_Man Thanks for the reply. One more question, you keep calling it a 26B. Is that something specific with the carb? What's the horse power on this engine. The one I'm replacing the carb on is a 23hp. (because the pin hosing, where the float connects, is cracked) The engine sticker is gone. So I'm just guessing at which carb to use. Gonna try an after market carb. If it doesn't work, I'll replace the jets from the old carb to the new.

Yes, this style of carburetor will fit, as the Kawasaki engine is separate from the mower manufacturer.
Even the Cheapo $20 ones on Amazon should work just as well. I tried a two of them out and they have been working without issue for two seasons now, or at least this is the second season and there are no issues. I keep the OEM carburetor in reserve.
Where can I get an 3/10 socket bits at so I could remove the screws off the plate as you did in ur video

Well ... I did not make a video but, I did buy a cheap carburetor on Amazon and I ran the Walbro through the sonic cleaner several times and put it away as a spare. So far, the cheap carburetor is running great at all throttle settings. I did see where the cheap air filter was potentially allowing dirt in so I bucked up for a genuine Kawasaki air filter and so far so good this season.
P.S. dont forget to check the fuel pump.

You are correct. Sorry about that. I have removed these new carbs several times now and all you can do is sonic clean them and that is it. Sonic cleaning has fixed them all as the air and fuel passages are very small an the days of using torch cleaning wires are over for these particular ones.

Make sure you don't have any welch plugs missing.
The Welch plug near the mixture screw was leaking on mine and was creating the same issue everyone on here is talking about.. I covered it over with jb weld and it runs like new.
