lyrics:
at the edges of my fingers
never quite closing round it
oh, that peace like a river
always going, but never getting
seems like maybe it’s not all that much a place
as it is a way
and ways don’t ever seem to want to
stay too still for too long
isn’t that what it’s all about?
the slow trickling thaw that sets the banks in half
the sweet melody it makes when the canyons crack
I wanna give it all I’ve got, and I want nothing
I want nothing back
whatever kingdom come, it probably won’t come quick
no mighty clarion to announce it
no single use ark to discard in an instant
like Theseus’s ship, we’ll fix the busted bits
‘til it’s both nothing like and everything
it’s always been
it’s a wonder we expect a thing to
stay the same at all
maybe that’s what it’s all about
we keep fixing what we know is only bound to break
what’s worth saving is never worth letting go to waste
I want to mend what I’ve got, instead of throwing away
ain’t nothing come easy
no, nothing comes quick
it’s gonna hurt like hell to become well
but if we set the bone straight
it’ll mend
it’ll fix
and we’ll be well
ain’t nothing come easy
no, nothing comes quick
but I want for you this: that you are well
I want for us this: that we are well

Welcome home Theseus
I feel like a lot of people miss the point of the song - and of the EP series in general. The whole thing isn't just about change and changing away from "archaic" belief systems. It's about having your worldview, your systems, and your ideology challenged or even broken and learning to navigate that new, frightening landscape. However, at the end of the day, there's nothing wrong with holding to your guns as long as you're willing to adapt - "Until it's both nothing alike and everything it always was."
This is theme is also carried through in...well, all the songs, but this song, Hieroglyphs and Soap really hammer home that you can't just abandon everything you were. You have to learn to rebuild but also maintain the good things that are there. Otherwise you're just a house without a foundation, or holes without ship.
No kidding, especially for those of us familiar with pitfalls of pop culture religion and those of us exploring faith. There has always been a difference. Everyone needs to challenge the truths they grew up with, the other side of that struggle is better. It leads to deeper and more actionable faith
I know this is a really late response but thanks for explaining. I always love learning the meanings of songs and I don’t know why but I just couldn’t pin point this one. Thanks!
Hey thanks for the explanation, but where did you find this?
I've been searching and i found nothing of the meaning of the song
That's exactly it! Instead of discarding something entirely, why don't we fix what's broken.
You managed to summon a fandom with a single word

a 21 year old's frustrated rant at 2:00am:
i hope you DSMP fans enjoy the song beyond the DSMP and enjoy the myths and story's from long ago past "my fav's in a mc stream said it!"
but that's my hope- that you all learn from the story's just like techno did before he committed to UA-cam (hence being able to reference them in the first place thanks to education).
i found this song through mythology, and i knew the myths before i knew techno and i knew techno's name when he first was rising to the top before Minecraft's Renaissance. It's, in my opinion, kinda cringe to see people go "hehe tommy innit" when the story's are steeped in so many things from their time and inspiring songs like this- yet the only take away you all seem to have is because of a Minecraft youtuber/streamer or two.
please take a moment to not only look at the song from your view but maybe think of how the artist actually feels for the song and why they maid it.- it would upset you if people constantly referenced something you don't know about for something you made with deep personal meaning because of a coincidence.
after all a song in 2020 with lines like "it’s a wonder we expect a thing to
stay the same at all" is something you need to take into account.

@@dionysus7988 i am a 7th grader and im proud of being in the mcyt community.
Dionysus is the Greek god of wine and madness with Bacchus being his Roman alteration. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk :)
I do find it kind of unfortunate, I am a mcyt fan but I can see how stuff like this would get really really annoying because the mcyt fans like the song because it has a title/small meaning that could possibly relate to a completely different thing whereas people who are not mcyt fans and like the song for something else get annoyed as the fanbase crashes into something they enjoy.
Or at least that’s how I see it, I wouldn’t know completely.
@@Bip4rl0 im a mcyt fan 2 and it's even getting on my nerves at this point
every Theseus video there's floods of "lol tommy inint" comments
Even if it sounds cliche, I feel like it's referring to life. So many broken bits, it's difficult, it hurts, and sometimes we feel like giving up on fixing it. But it's beautiful, despite being imperfect, and there are some truly amazing parts of life that are so small and simple and quiet we sometimes just don't notice them: people we love caring about us, nature, good music. It keeps breaking, but it's a still a beautiful thing worth saving
Thank you for this 😭 After reading your comment, I thought maybe I was just so busy trying to figure out my messes when I don't really need to. I have been in such a rut since my mom died years ago. I tried holding on to those "positive" quotes like "you will move on from it it's part of life". Tried masks, and when I didn't seem to understand everything, tried harming myself just to feel that "being alive". And THIS. This band happened to me. They said things like "There is no courage in flirting with fear to prove you're alive". "The ground all around, it was always holy.... let the wild take over. Let be what is, let be what isn't." And this song, with your comment. 😭 "I want to mend what I got, instead of throwing away." Thank you.
you took the words out of my mouth.
This is exactly how I envisioned it wow
Nah it’s referring to a bunch of kids playing a block game
@@timothyschmiedl251 delete this dude. The least you could do is not put the mcyt references in the comments of an actual comment _about the song._
I feel like this is a direct response to Glowing beforehand. In Glowing, they pointed out the things wrong with our systems and our beliefs whilst trying to install hope into us by saying that it’ll all be okay in the end. In Theseus they say that change is a long and scary process, that we should stop attempting to fix something inherently broken and like Theseus’s Ship we should start to replace the parts that are broken with new bits that are similar yet different to our old ways. What systems you ask? That’s the greatness of it, you can choose any system or belief structure you want and apply the same logic.
OH MY GOD AT THE END WHEN THEY SAY “THAT YOU ARE WELL” it’s the same melody as “a moon alight” AND NOW THEY HAVE A THEMATIC CONNECTION
FINALLY A COMMENT NOT ABOUT MINECRAFT YOURUBERS THANK FUCK

@Herbiesanity But this song is all about fixing what we have instead of throwing it away:
"Like Theseus’s ship, we’ll fix the busted bits
Maybe that’s what it’s all about
We keep fixing what we know is only bound to break
What’s worth saving is never worth letting go to waste
I want to mend what I’ve got, instead of throwing away."
But I don't think they are talking about just any system either. I think they are definitely intentional about pop culture religion vs faith and putting it into practice.

@@toastperson3118 the lyrics are in the description
@@persephone6204 That makes so much more sense.
I just found this song and I just decided, yes, I do like it.
Just straight poetry
I love the power and resistance underneath the tone of this song and in the lyrics.
"Theseus battled and overcame foes that were identified with an archaic religious and social order."
Just so perfect for one of the songs on this finishing ep
The song is a reference to "ship of Theseus" which is famous for the thought problem. It was so old that people kept replacing rotted bits with new wood...so after all that time...was it still the ship of Theseus?
This whole cycle of EPs is heavily drawing on religious deconstruction and then reconstruction. Basically, with this song they are asking of after they've "ship of Theseus"d their faith...what do you do with that?
2:31 This instrumental just reminds me of a huge ship riding along rocky waves, a captain laughing as he turns the ship through mazes of jagged rocks and a young teenager experiencing it all for the first time, staring in awe at the vastness of the sea as they hang from the ropes at the sides of the ship.
I just want The Oh Hellos to blow up. I want them to get popular and do great. I love them so much and they give me such hope. I just want the very best for them. ❤️

At 2:08, there's the melody from Rounds, coming in like a little prophecy of what's to come at the end. Damn I love this band.
YES! I absolutely love that! I love how that melody reminds me of Round's "I'll go on, and on, and on again, until my chest caves in" and how that specific lyric ties perfectly with Theseus' idea of having to constantly "keep fixing what we know is only bound to break". Gosh darn I love this band sm
Yep
This is such a theme with this band and I honestly live for it
Yes! This is also with another song of theirs where its bitter water's tune in the beginningbpart
Happiness and contentedness is not a destination, it's an on-going journey. There will be ups and downs; we should never expect it to stay good all the time. hey, please don't comment things that are off topic to the song, and please delete this comment. As a dsmp fan/oh fan, it's really awful to close this commentary section to people who want to talk •about the song• and not mentioning the song itself makes creators feel awful, because it devalues their work. They put years into this story album, and seeing such a rush of comments that don't even mention the song itself makes it feel as though people only click for the name and that they genuinely don't enjoy the song, just the slight connection it has to a thing they don't know about. If you'd like to make a comment, _please_ at least mention the song.
@@hufflepufflez3293 Don't assume that just because I commented that i don't appreciate the song/band. I love the Oh Hellos and enjoy many of their songs. Don't tell me what I can and can't comment, or to delete my comment either, bcuz that makes you seem entitled and kinda arrogant.

These last four EPs have been incredible journeys of mythological narrative in a way that can only be paralleled by [Joseph] Campbell. The poetic prose fosters wonderful feelings of escapism that hasn't been heard in mainstream music in years. This group should be commended for their efforts. Kudos.

Wait yeah like actually
I don't know where all these Minecraft Dream smp fans came from, but you're all welcome to stay. But do try to listen to more of The Oh Hello's songs! They're all very inspirational and craft such vivid images, besides sounding fantastic of course. Each of the albums weave together and craft stories within themselves, it's amazing if you listen to one fully. This is one of my favourite bands and I'm happy to see it get some attention again, even if it may be fleeting. But I do know some have now found their new favourite band. And that is especially good!
oh, this gets me. the discovery that healing is a process and a journey rather than a destination, the switch into wanting to live for the sake of living and asking nothing in return, the pain of quick fixes and the impatience when your progress slows, and the inherent question of "what am I if not my trauma, if not my hurts?" in the process of recreating yourself, in the comparison to theseus' ship. and finally the simple wish, one given to one you love and reflected by them in turn- that we are well. it's lovely, and it conceptualizes so many things about the process of recovery
In all that is going on right now changing the world may seem impossible, but 'what’s worth saving is never worth letting go to waste' and we need to keep fighting for our future, and however far off it may seem we do it because we want our children to grow up in the kingdom that is to come
I wanna give it all I’ve got, and I want nothing
