  • #MaxTegmark #MIT #ArtificialIntelligence Max Tegmark is a physicist, cosmologist, and artificial intelligence - machine learning researcher. He is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the scientific director of the Foundational Questions Institute. He has been my mentor and friend for a LONG time :-)
Professor Tegmark’s research is focused on precision cosmology, e.g., combining theoretical work with new measurements to place sharp constraints on cosmological models and their parameters. Early on, this challenge has lead him to work mainly on cosmology and quantum information. Although he’s continuing his cosmology work with the HERA collaboration, the main focus of his current research is on the physics of intelligence: using physics-based techniques to better understand biological and artificial intelligence (AI). Ultimately, this could culminate in what he calls an "AI Physicist" www.technologyreview.com/2018...
A native of Stockholm, Tegmark left Sweden in 1990 after receiving his B.Sc. in Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology (& a B.A. in Economics from the Stockholm School of Economics). His first academic venture beyond Scandinavia brought him to California, where he studied physics at the University of California, Berkeley, earning his PhD. in 1994.
Tegmark is an author on more than 200 technical papers, and has been featured in dozens of science documentaries. He has received numerous awards for his research, including a Packard Fellowship (2001-06), Cottrell Scholar Award, an NSF Career grant. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. His work with the SDSS collaboration on galaxy clustering shared the first prize in Science magazine’s “Breakthrough of the Year: 2003.”
His book "LIFE 3.0" was an instant New York Times Best Seller and one of Mark Cuban and Barack Obama's favorite books of 2017. Life 3.0 asks the question: "How will Artificial Intelligence affect crime, war, justice, jobs, society and our very sense of being human?" The rise of AI has the potential to transform our future more than any other technology-and there’s nobody better qualified or situated to explore that future than Max Tegmark.
How can we grow our prosperity through automation without leaving people lacking income or purpose? What career advice should we give today’s kids? How can we make future AI systems more robust, so that they do what we want without crashing, malfunctioning or getting hacked? Should we fear an arms race in lethal autonomous weapons? Will machines eventually outsmart us at all tasks, replacing humans on the job market and perhaps altogether? Will AI help life flourish like never before or give us more power than we can handle?

I have spent a few years on AI and I think your video has much to offer. I also recommend this 2 hour video documentary for an understanding of the basics on AI social issues. (ua-cam.com/video/5dZ_lvDgevk/v-deo.html) I was personally seeking to develop a bootstrap to configure AI deep learning. The goal was to reduce "noise" - avoiding the need for brute force searches to optimize polynomial time - and concentrate "data" - i.e. useful results - in order to create hierarchical and parallel special purpose AIs governed by a General Artificial Intelligence. Now it seems my interest has become a quaint notion as countries like China have simply bypassed the need to engineer responsible AI structures using massive populations whose personal information is fed to an AI using a deep learning process. I call this irresponsible because the AI learning process has no safeguards.
I don't view artificial intelligence as more than an imitation of life. I psychologically require both form and inhabitant to define life. For me AI is an example of the lights are on but nobody is home. AI will never perfectly imitate human life because it is not possible to create an algorithm for every behavior as Godel proved. However if it becomes possible to create artificial intelligence as a biological life form that meets all the requirements of reproduction and animal existence then I would consider that a form of true artificial life as opposed to human life even if it took a human form. Finally artificial wisdom can only be approximated for the same reason when and if one defines intelligence as leveraging information. This is follows the general understanding that wisdom is the application of knowledge distinct from its acquisition.I feel I have understated the answer but considering how broad the topic is I doubt anyone could answer comprehensively.
Please continue the excellent work you do here.

It's true that information and possibly computation constitute intelligence if not awareness. But to reach human like level of processing material science will need to move towards more biological materials not just microcircuits and microchips. At that point neuronal artificial circuits will mostly highly resemble as also improve on biological material.

Black eyes, black flowers and the lonely hill lie far to the east of an eclipsing sun. Travelers sing some songs echoing warm meetings surrounded by heavy darkness. Upon the moonlit infinite heavens, the vast calm ocean rests the sleeping king's tiredness. Listen; the unfathomable drumming of the sleepless giant man calls glimmering little stars and black trees carrying red flowers for the comforting of a mind; a distant sound; inescapable martyrdom, to be born behind the walls, in a city so lost.

Galileo was wrong, not all objects (all things being equal regarding air resistance), fall towards the Earth with the same acceleration, if the Moon fell towards the Earth it's Gravity would also "attract" the Earth towards it, now keep halving the mass of the Moon, the same would apply but halved each time, this shows logically that the mass of an object does affect the rate at which it "falls" towards the Earth, the problem with most demonstrations is that the masses used are so infinitesimal compared to that of the Earth, that the differences between then are negligible.

Arthur C Clarke envisioned a simple hierarchy : InformationKnowledgeWisdom . Not that one leads to the next but, viewed as a vertical stack, (ideally) Knowledge 'knows' how best to organise and use Information; and Wisdom knows how to organise and best use knowledge. He mentioned this in an interview once.

@tegmark @drbriankeating it seems like the recent happenings around wallstreetbets is the Democratization of information-is-power. How could AI be used to support a bottoms up approach to finding these sorts of anomalies in “the system” and improve the social outcome? It would be wonderful if some of the basic AI media filtering tools would be provided to the masses for example (assuming the masses have the desire, the time or are able to overcome the laziness of actually using these tools).
Wonderful show! Thanks for inspiring us to think.

15:27, What Tegmark is saying is true for any mathematics, or for that matter any other knowledge. Anyone can know how to multiply two matrices. My question is 'AI' qualitatively different from knowing to multiply two matrices or solve linear equations. My answer is NO !

I watch a lot of physics podcasts and get to find out the (science hero's if you like) of the different guru's whether it's Brian with Galileo, Brian Greene (Einstein) or Frank Wilczek (Maxwell). I even hear some say that they guys in the past just picked the low hanging fruit and there's little left to pick. But when Max talks about Aristotle saying dumb things, it is worth remembering their time (350 bc or thereabouts) it wasn't dumb then and he, like Thales, is one of the giants whose shoulders people like Gilbert had to stand on. They had little in the way of empirical thinking, they had to break new ground continuously. What would Aristotle or Plato or Gilbert or Galileo, never mind Newton be able to come up with today with the sort of elementary and high school knowledge and other resources available to our modern day thinkers. Would we 'get' quantum mechanics or an understanding of the collapse of the wave function quicker?

Call me autistic, but/and: WTF is up on page 434? Why does Turing make Player B "third" when "Interrogator" is listed 3rd on p433? Regardless of his genius, Turing makes a number of (now more obvious) errors in his argument, which flow to Chomsky in this case. (says a Chomskers fan).

So this guy thinks that communications in science are worthy of emulation by the larger community?
Im sorry, while a lot of what he says in interesting and funny this is wrong. Science should not be a model for anything but science. It can't be.
First of all its and initiatory community. Like a cult. To have something to say you have to spend years in academia completing your scientific and academic apprenticeship knowing full well saying the wrong thing to the wrong person and you're gone. Not hateful things but simply unpopular ideas. You have to pass your catechism to become a phd. Heretics not allowed. This continues throughout your scientific career. You must stay i the mainstream or be excluded. Take everett and his many worlds. Wrote a paper that was ahead of its time and that challenged orthodoxy and his career was over. Try wearing a trump '24 t shirt to work or in public and see how long it is before your are fired.
Academic speech is the opposite of free speech.
