Good to know the updates can be downloaded even without owning the game. One of my worries with digital updates is buying a physical game in the future, only to find out it had a critical patch that I can't get anymore. Getting it ahead of time is pretty useful. Although, I still wonder about what to do if my 3ds breaks sometime in the future. As far as I know, you can't simply use an old SD card for a new 3ds- you'll need to do a system transfer from one working 3ds to the next. So if my current 3ds is broken, I may not have access to any digital downloads anymore. Unless the next one I buy already has those downloads, or there's a way to hack it.
@@xt3100 I haven't had a chance to test this myself, but I believe the game data is tied to your specific 3ds and can't be recognized by another unit. Nintendo wants you to do the transfer process instead of copy/pasting games, which would make piracy super easy. But maybe there's a way to hack the data, I'm just not sure.
i’m terrified of the last thing in your comment happening to me. i’m purchasing over $150 worth of games since the eshop is shutting down on my near decade old 3ds, i’m praying it lasts me a long time. i have a crappy lil 2ds that gets no use, but even if i could get my games transferred over, you need the eshop to redownload titles. so i’m at a loss. just wishing i guess😭
I really appreciate this. I was planning on getting all of the 3DS Pokémon games that I don’t currently own and was thinking I had to get them before the shop goes down to be able to get the updates because I had no idea you can download the updates without the games.
It’s definitely necessary for X and Y thanks to the Lumiose City glitch that, from what I’ve heard, can corrupt your save data if you save in a certain part of the city.
Y'all are saving lives. I've been trying to figure out the best way to check for updates and had resigned myself to checking my whole library individually. This is a much better method.
Definitely do this for Xenoblade X on Wii U if you plan on playing it. The game has multiple 'data packs' on the eshop that make the game's performance much better.
Note, do not do get them if you have the digital version. The data packs are merely downloading most of the game so it is redundant with a digital copy
This is such good advice. I’ve had a creeping feeling of dread about the future playability of my library for quite some time. In the day and age of critical fixes in day-one patches that aren’t included on the cartridge, even maintaining a purely (or mostly, in my case) physical library isn’t a safeguard of future use. I worry what will happen when the servers go down and these vital fixes and updates are no longer available.
Worst case scenario guys, you can hack your 3ds and download the latest update for the specific game that cannot be updated anymore from your pc pretty easily
2:14 interesting cause if you format the micro sd card correctly you can use a much larger one. I personally use a 200GB micro sd card for many years and it works just fine.
The main reason why a 32 gig card is recommended is because a sd card bigger then that will have its read write speed slowed down significantly as a result in some cases it's better to stick to 32 gig cards
I just updated myself to a 200GB this weekend and I'm so glad I did. I did notice a longer load time when I turn it on, which gave me about 10 seconds to cycle through the stages of grief the first time I turned it on while I became convinced I'd screwed it up, but then it was fine!
one person actually used 512gb of Micro SD card to use it large. But @Aidan Helfrich said, more than 32 gb is getting slow. and same thing happened to a person who used 512gb Micro SD card
FYI, you can use a 128 GB micro SD card. Just format it to fat32 with 32K allocation size. In Windows, you'll need to use a partition software. I used Partition Magic. My micro SD card is a SanDisk and I'm using them in 3 different 2DS XL and 1 3DS.
I was hesitant at first but I ended up using a micro SD card larger than 32gb as opposed to using multiple micro SD cards that are 32gb in size just so I can have everything on 1 card.
@@davidchan7860 The most noticable issue I had was with GBA VC titles, in that the screen would loop on itself, or in some cases doubled graphics at the very bottom of the top screen
Considering the ability to redownload games on the OG Wii still hasn’t gone away, I’m assuming the ability to redownload and get updates for 3DS games will be around for quite a while. Still better to be safe though, good info. Also yeah, I’ve been using a 64gb card in my 3DS for years with no issues. Just gotta reformat it for it to show up.
2:14 While that's what nintendo themselves claim to be the max size, it's actually not true. The 3ds can read any sd card of any size as long as it has been previously formatted into the FAT-32 format, can confirm from experience since I had a 128 gig sd card filled with a little over 86 gigs of data in it. My 3ds has been broken for a while now but at least I have all of that data backed up on my pc, I should hope that the transfer system still works no matter what if some day I just wanna get a new 3ds
all of these updates and games are archived and preserved, and can be obtained relatively easily via CFW. does not make this whole situation any less depressing :(
I didn't understand the importance of this video until you made me realize that some of the games in my rather large backlog may have updates that I'm not even aware of yet, and may not ever know about until a year or two from now when I finally play them! It's great to know that I can not only check if any of them have updates now but also download them even if the game isn't inserted or installed yet! (Weird that it would work that way though!)
It will never be too late, a 3ds is one of the easiest consoles to hack and games and updates are backed up on so many trustworthy sites, even though Nintendo is shutting the stores down the games will never truly be gone. The WiiU on the other hand, last time I checked the only way to hack one is to officially buy a DS game first so definitely do that before it's too late or you'll have to wait for someone to discover a new exploit.
This! The Wii U was a bit of a pain, but the 3DS was a piece of cake. After you do the whole haxchi thing with the Wii U (using a DS game) it’s fairly simple from there. Especially when you do the vWii
Note: the yo-kai watch games(particularly 2 and blasters basically require updates with 2 adding a bunch of features and compatability with psychic specters and blasters adding a whole new campaign)
As far as I know, the Wii shopping channel which closed in 2019 is still open to be able to install previously purchased games and updates, so I wouldn't panic yet about Wii u and 3ds. But if this is something that gives you peace of mind then there's no real harm.
Yeah but wii shop only works for the console that you Buy the stuff so at this point much people stuff just lost forever just because the console dont use a simple acount system.
Reminder that the PS3 and 360 came years before the 3DS and are still supported and that the 3DS latest model came only in 2017. Nintendo is the worst company when it comes to preservation of videogames.
Nintendo was still making new 3DS games and updating the eshop with software as recently as 2018. Four years of not supporting it is really not that long. Shame.
Would also like to add if u have Xenoblade Chronicles X(Wii U, *Physical version) don't forget to download it's update files, makes the game run a lot better.
I recently made sure all of my Wii U and 3DS games were updated. While I’m at it I’m going to make sure my PS3, Vita, and 360 games are fully updated as well.
Zion, dude! Thank you so much ffor reminding us to do this! I immediately check the eshop for updates and there they are the updates for all my Yokai Watch game that i owned by haven't got the chance to play it. BRB downloading all the updates from the eshop. Thanks man!
4 years, but to have no access to the systems shop on a console you may have only bought 2 years ago seems off to me. Lack of effort on Nintendo's part
The New 2DS XL wasn't a new console but a low budget variant of the New 3DS XL of 2014. It was targeted to people who couldn't afford the switch. Like the Wii Mini was to the Wii for people who couldn't afford the Wii U. Or the SNES Jr. was to the SNES for people who couldn't get a N64.
Thanks for the PSA. I've been putting off going through the eShop and getting the updates I need but now that you've reminded me there is no better time than the present!
Super helpful video! But I have found an important thing to note about 3ds game updates - not all updates were released in the way shown in this video. Some games require you to actually find the game page on the eshop to update them, and even then I've found it quite inconsistent. There are 2 more ways to find other updates that won't appear in the way Zion has explained: 1. This is the more obvious one, simply go to the settings section of the the eshop, then go to "available updates". 2. This is the one that I found a few extra updates I'd have otherwise missed - in the settings page of the eshop, scroll down to "redownloadable software", then on the bottom right, click "titles you've downloaded". You may find there games with a button saying "update available" next to "title information". This is the only way I found out about these "hidden" updates for a few of my games, such as ace attorney: spirit of justice. Hope this helps!
IMO custom firmware is an invaluable tool to have on the 3ds. All of the updates and patches are already archived online and don't rely on Nintendo's support. you can just download them on your pc and keep them safe there until you need them, or use them on your new 3ds if your old one breaks.
@@riccccccardo sure, just make a new folder on the pc and copy all the contents over from the SD card and that's it. But with custom firmware you could also backup multiple saves for each game.
Redownloads including updates to games will be available after March 2023. For how long exactly isn’t clear but Wii redownloads are still available years later for what its worth. Granted I totally agree to download them now while you still can and just get ahead
Just in case people were curious you can have above a 32gb sd card and it is pretty simple to do. If you are very curious there are a bunch of tutorials online.
You can use a bigger SD card if you format them to FAT32, I have a 128GB SD card for my entire 3DS collection... It was barely enough, so I better back that up to a thumb drive.
@Nintendo_Life 02:53 You can take that tip a step further and do this... After searching for the word "update", while still on the results screen, click/tap the "Sort By..." button on the lower right of the bottom screen. Then click/tap the "Filter By..." button. Under "platforms" click/tap the "All Software" button. Then click/tap the "All Downloadable Software" button. Then at the lower right part of the bottom screen, click/tap the "Apply Filters" button. Then, presto! Now, you have the same results as before but without the videos showing up as part of those results, ending up with only the downloadable software updates being visible. Enjoy. 😊
Thanks for tip regarding linking the Switch account and 3DS account. I didn’t know about the May deadline to the 3ds wallet. Also thanks for the update info!
I actually play "Nintendo Badge Arcade" still. Close to 5000 badges in fact and I wonder if that game will still be accessible given that each time I start it up it takes a rather long time to boot up/connect to the servers (I assume). I didn't spend any money except when I had it new and thought I get one of the offered backgrounds (was a cheap deal; sadly not even music there when selected; changed to the Super Mario Odyssey one) but I like the software because the time that Baito the badge Bunny greeted me with specific flavor text for the first weeks I thought his lines were quite wittily written and the gameplay is a UFO catcher with Nintendo prizes. Not to forget you receive the neat option to decorate your folders thematically. I for example used the various Pixel Collection badges that have badges based on consoles and handhelds so I can right away see where my eshop games are. Of course I got a bunch of Totodiles sprinkled here and there (because I love that jolly Dile). But yeah, would highly reccommend people to check the titles out that are free to start as long as they are there.
Nintendo just forced me to mod my 3DS. And before everyone go crazy about piracy, I have a vast library of 3DS games, which I have bought. However, I hate the idea that a hidden gem might surface in the future which I was not aware of, and becomes absolutely impossible to get hold of and play (like a eshop-only game). This way, at least not all hope is lost. For my sake, it's just a way to secure my future ownership of the 3DS, and now I am currently playing Quake on the 3DS (which I own). :) It's gonna be fun to explore all the homebrew that is out there.
I found some of the web links already that you can install the hardware on. One of them appears to be a pokemon storage app similar to Pokebank. There is also useful ones Ike the ability to use save data from Gameboy Color Games directly inside your Nintendo 3DS. You can also apparently have more than one save file for your pokemon 3DS games as well by hacking the console, something that Nintendo will ever do themselves. Also the console needs to hacked(?) to install a file that allows you bypass the waiting time when you get disconnected from the Internet in the middle of a trade. There is also crystal clear proof that it works as well. It has been possible to hack the Nintendo 3DS for a short while now as some UA-camrs has clearly shown in videos already.
@@joshernsteen2066 awesome information! I don't play pokemon myself. But it was really useful information. I have an app which transfer save files from 3ds Cartridges to the SD Card as well. But even cartridges and SD Cards wont last forever so you can also backup the data properly now since the console is modded. I have a 10TB network storage, which is mirrored every night to off-site storage at my mother's house, in case of a disaster. Almost everything I cherish, photos, home videos, creative projects, movies, music, games etc has proper backup these days.
Same! I always played original games on my 3DS, but when the news came out I decided to mod it, I feel like it's too soon for Nintendo to give up on the 3DS family, actually it's also sad that they won't release any other DS console, I have a soft spot for them (I own a DS lite and a first gen 3DS, I plan to get a 3DS xl in the future), I know that the switch is supposed to be the new portable but it doesn't have the same feeling as the DS family
I still enjoyed watching this but I have a modded 3ds and thanks to the people updates and games are backed up to the internet. I can grab then whenever I want.
Updates are one thing, but having to go back and buy the DLC for games I have that i want to play in the future, before it's all gone,.. that's a gargantuan task.
I'll be sure to download as many of the updates and free stuff that I can before it's all gone. Might wait and see if there are any last sales before I buy those few games I had on my wish-list. Going to miss this little system, was a great one, I wish I'd gotten a "new 3DS" before they pulled the plug on production so I could have gotten a few snes games on it too, but oh well... the years just seem to have gone by so fast since it really was new, I don't know where the time went.

Also make sure you all download the special demo for Sun/Moon which allows you to get Ash Greninja & the special for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire for various items.
Oh no! I don't have a 3DS yet. I was hoping that Nintendo would keep up all update services until it went out of service completely, although I knew that was unlikely. Maybe I should stop buying Switch games too? Or should I enjoy them now I still can? What do you think? Of course, some Switch games (and I guess 3DS games too?) do get updates, but then it will become a big hassle to find the updates ones. I don't think the cheaper con vendors will put in the effort to display what version each cartridge is. And for third party titles, I don't think they do updates on the cartridge at all, do they?
I have too many games left to buy and not enough time. Unfortunately, I don’t think I will be able to complete my 3DS digital library. I will at least be able to buy most of them.
Yeah...I basically did this the moment they announced eshop closures. Even games that I don't own, I may buy them in the future. It's incredibly unfortunate many cartridges will be left in unfinished/buggy states without these updates. 😥
the same may unfortunately happen to switch games when those are eventually phased out in the coming years; games like ACNH, Nintendo Switch Sports, and others will lack important fixes, bonus content, and even entire gamemodes thanks to Nintendo
@@itsstudytimemydudes4345 I don't know how logistical it would be for these companies to reprint more of their switch games with all of the updates on cartridge after the fact, but I wish it would become the new norm. Just so everyone knows, you can actually use larger than 64 GB SD cards in a 3DS. Just do a Google search and look into it first however. It's easy and definitely worth doing.

This is helpful to know, thanks for commenting. Downloading that update now, even tho I haven’t played Smash on my 3ds yet. (Just got my 3ds two years ago)
You can go larger than 32gb but require a formatter software that formats the card in FAT32 which is what the 3DS and Wii U system read which is also why it's a "Max" of 32gb for each. I have a 64gb card for my 3DS and it runs fine.
Good to know. This reminds me of when I re-started 'Dragon Quest IX' after they discontinued online DS play and found out I was locked out of the DLC content- it was devastating. Luckily, I got some helps getting them manually via StreetPass.
If you have a modded 3ds you can install updates even after the eshop is down using the update cia file and will automatically apply to your game ( some update files are a little hard to find)
I wonder if this will be a bigger problem when the Switch EShop closes and all those "finish it later" style games can't ever be finished without updates.

That's such a cool and useful feature, I had no idea!
I had that on my mind for a while when I first got my 3DS back in 2015.
i thought you could back up the games though from your 3DS to your pc and onto a new 3DS
Be careful guys, if you delete Flappy Bird you won't be able to redownload it
I have an Iphone 3 with glappy bird happy to sell you for $5000
flappy bird on the 3ds?
This sure does feel exactly like that lol
No, but can I interest you in Frenchy Bird for the Wii U?
ua-cam.com/video/YTETSl0pkh0/v-deo.html
Actually on Android you can still redownload it
I really appreciate this.
Good call! This reminds me of the Pokemon XY Lumoise City bug, which was fixed with an update.
Definitely do this for Xenoblade X on Wii U if you plan on playing it. The game has multiple 'data packs' on the eshop that make the game's performance much better.
Yup.
I just picked up a copy today, thanks for the heads up!
Good idea, I need to do that. Been playing the Wii version of the first game for awhile now.
Note, do not do get them if you have the digital version. The data packs are merely downloading most of the game so it is redundant with a digital copy
Doing that now.
Nintendo: Wait, that’s illegal…
@@jamesb.6177 If I disappear all of a sudden you know who did it 😳🤣

2:14 interesting cause if you format the micro sd card correctly you can use a much larger one. I personally use a 200GB micro sd card for many years and it works just fine.
The main reason why a 32 gig card is recommended is because a sd card bigger then that will have its read write speed slowed down significantly as a result in some cases it's better to stick to 32 gig cards
Yup, I have a 64 gb one rn. Just have to format it to FAT32
@@yoonpark8311 I can attest to that.
128GB cards require 64KB cluster size, not 32KB
@@captain_jerkass I used 32 kb. Did you run into any issues with 32 kb? So far I haven't.
@@davidchan7860 The most noticable issue I had was with GBA VC titles, in that the screen would loop on itself, or in some cases doubled graphics at the very bottom of the top screen
is this also possible for a Wii? my Wii only takes 2gb SD cards I think and I want to back up a sea of stuff
There’s a new hack involving the Wii U’s Health and Safety guide. I forget what it’s called though.
@@lefszycic ooo nice, I'll give it a try this weekend
I'm really glad this is the case as I certainly would hate it if I turn on my console one day and found out the games I purchased were all gone.
Yeah but wii shop only works for the console that you Buy the stuff so at this point much people stuff just lost forever just because the console dont use a simple acount system.
Yeah what I’m more worry about is actually getting these games at a reasonable price afterwards
Shame.
@@wesreleases6346 Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn came out in 2019… only three years….

Thanks man!
Idea for your next video: Top 10 3DS updates you should download before the eShop closes
0:19 I had no idea you could unlock Puzzle League in New Leaf. I know what I’m doing next weekend.
I feel like the 2DS XL just came out a couple years ago that is really quick to kill a console's e shop.
4 years,
but to have no access to the systems shop on a console you may have only bought 2 years ago seems off to me.
@@EnigmaBarry it was a new console. It had old hardware being given a refresh.
There are 2 more ways to find other updates that won't appear in the way Zion has explained:
I have windows 11 not sure I can backup my 3ds to my pc?

Redownloads including updates to games will be available after March 2023. For how long exactly isn’t clear but Wii redownloads are still available years later for what its worth. Granted I totally agree to download them now while you still can and just get ahead
The Wii Shop Channel even still has its patch available for download (there was a single patch for Skyward Sword).
Don't forget the in game dlc for the Layton games. Also, Monster Hunter Stories in Japan has a huge content update that is a must have.
Just in case people were curious you can have above a 32gb sd card and it is pretty simple to do. If you are very curious there are a bunch of tutorials online.
You can use a bigger SD card if you format them to FAT32, I have a 128GB SD card for my entire 3DS collection... It was barely enough, so I better back that up to a thumb drive.
easier way just go to eshop then setting/other and updates will show what you need instead of looking one by one.
I'm going to have to go through and do this with all my games.
Just mod your device, every game is free
@@louislondon4025 how?

This was really informative, i really need to through downloading these updates asap!
I downloaded every single update just in case, this thought didn’t even cross my mind until I saw your video. Thank you so much
@Nintendo_Life 02:53 You can take that tip a step further and do this...
The May deadline is kind of meaningless. All you have to do is start adding funds on your PC of Switch.
I have also installed my Cartridges to the SD Card. You know, all the things you want to have official solutions for.
I would say, that the update for the Louvre is maybe one of the most important, and so is the software- only as download.
There's a place to patch and add dlc that's not the eShop. I won't mention it here but it's a very nice resource.
I still enjoyed watching this but I have a modded 3ds and thanks to the people updates and games are backed up to the internet. I can grab then whenever I want.
I would like to see a list of best digital only games for 3ds and wiiu, I think that would be helpful.
I’m sure that’s coming.
Updates are one thing, but having to go back and buy the DLC for games I have that i want to play in the future, before it's all gone,.. that's a gargantuan task.
or just pirate them once its gone.

That right there is the only update Mario Kart 7 got, and all it did was patch a glitch. They can’t let you have _too much_ fun ,:/
The updates can also be easily acquired through…. alternative means. Can be downloaded as easily as scanning a QR code.
Can we get a video on the best 3ds games to buy before the eShop closes?
For all you Pokemon fans out there, make sure you have Bank Downloaded however the other App Transporter can only be obtained if you have a current subscription.
Glad to see I’m not the only recommending people to update all of their games before the servers shut down :) I barely saw any talk about that
I have too many games left to buy and not enough time.
Look at the ACNL Welcome Amiibo update for example, that also had a physical rerelease.
