Mick this is like finding buried treasure. Please don't stop posting, this footage is so nostalgic and reminds us of a world which now seems so far away. You're keeping the memories alive. Have been a fan since Cacophony, saved up my pocket money to buy all your records back then. Even my Christmas present list was SM albums!
This is getting towards when you parted ways with the band. I think you must have been in a very difficult place. I’m so glad you did what was best for you and your health. It must be a bit difficult looking back on this now - we all appreciate you sharing this with us. Big hugs.
I love seeing these behind the scenes in the studio and at the gigs videos. And the piano and keys background music of Mandela Day is beautiful. Thanks Mick.
Bravo Mick. Realmente, bravo, bravo, bravo...poi a sentire i suoni delle tue tastiere con quelle pause... Arrivano sempre brividi...thank you From Italy. Gl🎾👏👏👏🤝🤗
The first Time i saw Simple Minds was on june 11th 1988. On spanish TV. I was 13 years old and my life changed for ever. And now watching this video im crying. Amazing.
It's a shame it's not as it was .your positive energy and musical perfection is missed ...your fingers are genius ...don't change be you in what ever you do .....I'm the lad who used to deliver your paper in Pollokshields
Thanks Mick. Great memories and insight for SM fans. Seeing big John. Fantastic. NM 70th will always be for me a pivotal SM moment and to see behind the scenes was fantastic. Keep sharing Mick.
Was that Jim's mum and dad at the end? I'm sure he will treasure these memories... Another rare and really welcome insight into the history of the band from the inside. Thanks a million Mick
@@mickmacneil1 the Mandela concert was my first time seeing Simple Minds. I was 14 and travelled to Wembley from Liverpool with my older sister. Magnificent day Mick
Absolutely brilliant and beautiful Mick.. remember taking a well thought out ‘wrong turn’ at Wembley that day looking for a bar and found myself in a bar in one of the twin towers which was full of yours and the eurythmics roadies.. great memories ❤️
Mick, can you at sometime play the piano version of someone somewhere in summertime please. There is a few playing it on youtube but they need to see how its really done by the master 💙👍🏻
This is just so good to see Mick. We can see all the live footage we can shake a stick at but nothing comes close to this type of insight. ❤ thanks as always - Andy
What a treasure! Thank you so much for sharing this! The Mandela Day concert was the first time I saw you guys live (on TV at least). I had just gotten into you as a band. I was forever changed. This line up is it for me. Thank you so much. ❤
I've been a Simple Minds fan for many years. Saw the band at Ibrox in '85. After discovering this channel and listening back, it's occurred to me that without you Mick, the band wouldn't be anywhere near as successful. Your musicianship is beautiful.
Mick was the genesis of so many of the melodies so many amazing songs flowered from and Charlie, Jim, John and Mel gave the songs just what they needed. Nothing like him and nothing like Simple Minds with Michael at the boards.
Watching this, it's difficult to piece together how things fell out to the point of Mel opting out of the sessions. These glances behind the scenes are wonderful. It was an interesting time for the band as Jim would say the wheels were coming off after 10 years of the cycle that claimed a few casualties. Love the footage of Jim and the family, Jasmin was adorable.
@@HighlandMike325 I'd never heard that, very interesting. I just knew it was abrupt. Read that Trevor could drive you nuts cos he had a certain sound he was chasing with a tenacity. Most producers are like that though?
@@guyincognito1560From Jim's eulogy to John when he died last year on Simple Minds social media "July '88, London. On entering the control room of Sarm Studio that afternoon it was too obvious that I had walked into a tense situation occurring between then Minds bassist, John Giblin, and our record producer at that moment, Trevor Horn. Mannered gents both, there was nothing really to suggest that things might unduly get out of hand. It did however, and badly so, when only a few minutes later, and without any signal of his intentions, John calmly unplugged his bass in the middle of recording and walked out the room with no words. Gone from Simple Minds, but never to be forgotten."
@@HighlandMike325 Much appreciated. Remember being puzzled when I bought the record and seeing just the three on the cover but John and Mel were in the credits. Went to see them in Manheim not long after and there's Malcolm. I thought John gave them a great dynamic, too young to realize what a force he was at the time. Trevor is a cheeky fella, being a bass player myself, it's not hard to recognize the talent in them both. Suppose Trevor just pushed it too hard as he tended to do. Thanks for taking the time, best.
Love the interaction between Mel and John. I'm hugely influenced by the 2 of them as a wannabee drummer who would become a semi-pro bass player in the end...
thanks for posting these little gems ...... Mick, really think it's time to do a wee piano based album of these iconic songs you were so much a part of .... what do ya think son ? 🤩
Mick, just wanted to say thank you so much for this. Incredible stuff, so many details - I’ve watched it over and over. Must confess, I never realised you played The Hyde Park show. Was it just the one song, Mandela Day?
I had to look several times...jeez age is a wonderful thing. I think that's Jane walking beside Jimmy and I think that is Yasmin (Jim's daughter on his shoulder ) The wee girl with dark hair is Natalie ( Chrissie's daughter ..Ray Davis is her dad). The other wee girl holding Natalie's hand looks like Gemma, my youngest. Wow, I have to check with Gemma and Kirsty next time I see them. Be fun to see Sally and Oli in one of your clips. You really did a hell of a lot of filming...amazing and great to post 'em Mick. Keep them coming...SM fans love them...me too. Cheers man. ❤️
I sent you a couple of clips on X but not sure how that works anymore, I don’t really use that platform, I’ve gone off musk, even dumped my Tesla, heap of shit.
I always thought it was your "musical contribution" that made Simple Minds' music so special to me. Thanks Mick ❤

You are my best ever keyboard player thank you the memories mick
The brilliant John Giblin is in this!! Go e but not forgotten. RIP John
I heard he was real funny, you can tell by how he casually suggested windchimes. Fortunate he came in to the Simple Minds orbit if ever so briefly.
OMG Trevor so young and Big John... Thank you SOOO MUCH ❤❤
Such great footage, Mick! THANK YOU, again!

From someone who lapped this up on the day- reminiscing whilst watching these snippets is fascinating. Thanks Mick. 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing Mick. You were the Vertebrae of the Band. Never the same since your departure. It was like INXS without Hutch
Great stuff mick.. like everyone else I’m getting older now but your music and the memories are so special.. thank you sir

Seeing out the angels. What a great music and band. Thank you for posting
Are you referring to Mandela Day chord progression taken from Seeing out the angel? If so well spotted.

Yes, exactly, it is a very beautiful melody.

John Giblin bailed too. Unplugged his bass and walked out of the band without a word according to Jim after a ahem discussion with Trevor Horn
