So I've recently started collecting agates and would like to start cutting/polishing them and have an opportunity to purchase a used DP Genie cabbing machine (at a very affordable price). Question, should I use the money instead to purchase a 6 or 8" flat lap? Or will I be able to polish flat faces just as easily with the cabbing machine?
I would definitely recommend getting a cabbing machine over a flat lap for just about all of your rock polishing needs. The only advantage a flat lap has is the ability to make a perfectly flat surface, with can be challenging on a cabbing machine. Good luck!
Hey, thanks for watching! I honestly could have done a better with the flat lap in general, particularly during the earlier stages. I suspect the shine would have been better using that combination you about which you asked.
Good comparison. I agreed with all your picks. I like the look of the cabbing machine. But the last one very nice flat lap.
Looking back at the video makes me wish I had changed out my 280 grit wheel before starting. Those agates would have looked so much better!
Love the content and video quality. Thank you.
Thanks John! I’m constantly trying to improve the quality of the video, especially with light and focus.

How would this compare if you had use Covington’s leather or synthetic felt disc and optical grade cerium oxide?
