The decline of American democracy won't be televised

  • We imagine democratic failure will start with a spectacular event: a military coup or the declaration of martial law. But in a country like the U.S., democratic backsliding will likely to start off looking a lot more normal -- with slow, legal attacks on our democratic institutions. It's the kind of thing that won't generate many news headlines -- at least not until it's too late.

Yeah, violent mobs have taken the entire nation hostage while leaders are grovelling and enabling it. Anyone that dares question it is destroyed.
      This is how democracy ends.
The cultural revolution is here, we're starting with destroying the four olds.
Socialism is going to bring peace and equality for everyone!

I used to love America. I was proud to be American, and to have Served in the SEALs. Now? I am deeply ashamed of both. America is a failed oligarchy . America is the single most corrupt country on the planet. America has more prisoners that every other country on Earth. Black sites, torture, etc are common place. The will and desires of the population are ignored and subverted as a matter of course. China is the Land of the Free in comparison.

You do know all the architects of the Italian Fascist Party were members of socialist parties or organisations? Why did Lenin congratulate Mussolini when he took power? Why did JFK praise Hitler? Why did Canadian Liberal Prime Minister praise Hitler? Why were Mussolini and FDR such good buddies? Why did Hollywood love Mussolini for a spell? You do know he was a life long socialist?

Plus those who attacked Chavez were of the political/social elite who blatantly ruled Venezuela as a corrupt Oligarchy that pretended to be a Democracy so Chavez was seen as a hero for standing up to them. Also, Venezuela has weaker institutions of democracy then Western countries do so it's much easier for dictators to come to power through the legal route and turn it into a dictatorship.

I've often shrugged when I consider what would happen after impeachment, since Pence would be no friend to women or minorities. However there is no doubt that Pence respects his country, and he's no sociopathic liar. As you say, Trump could be much more dangerous to the country than an honest right wing fanatic. What I find shocking is how Trump's core don't even bother to demand sincerity.

I don't know, I think Pence is just as manipulative and insidious and lies, he just hides it well under this 'aw-shucks' false humbleness. What's more worrying about him is that he'll do and say everything Trump is doing and saying, exploit the same prejudices, divides and backslide on democracy but he'll actually be effective in doing it. He'll be effective at curbing voting rights, effective at gerrymandering democracy out of existence... He's a bigger threat to this country, I think. At least Trump is useless at his job.

Any politician can be a populist regardless of the ideology he or she seemingly aligns with. If a nation has affinity to socialism/fascism, populists simply have to pretend to be socialists/fascists to get elected. They can even cherrypick and mix individual elements of several ideologies to maximise their appeal. That's one of the basic principles behind populism.

As long as homicide shootings continues to decrease it's fine. Mass shootings has been reducing per population since they have been recorded. They probably moved to schools when they became "firearm free zones". Your willing to give up your freedom because the media shows horrors you never knew existed before only to move on to the next once it's gone? Our politicians give examples like Australia, and ignore that they have more mass killings per population than america does. Ignore the unchanged reduction in firearms homicides after their buyback program and current problem of having more firearm homicides than before their buyback, took them a good 15 years but now the criminals have the guns and they have just as many as pre-buyback days.
