To be fair, Firebrand is the OG "red coat, blonde mane, quick to anger" pony. Short Fuse and Sprout can only dream of being as significant in the fandom.
It's a funny gag to be sure, but I actually read his willingness to be the butt of this cameo as him maybe also having gotten less abrasive about the new generation.
I have to disagree about Zip's coloring; it certainly says much about her character as much as the upswept styles do. For Zip, the seeking and wanting of flight was a major portion of her character. Her coloring brings the greatest attention to that -- with the majority of her color being her wings. Everything else is secondary (including the role she was supposed to fill later on).
His main point though is that white is nothing and there is not enough about her to compensate. Rarity had her very intriqued mane and tail. Even so it was slightly too little which actually helped her look slightly naked without some accessories.
White can also be associated with purity and incorruptible. Zip is the "honest" one, the one most uncomfortable living the lie that the royals can still fly. Also as the color of clouds, white may be a color that works well for her against the backdrop of a blue sky now that pegasus flight has been restored.
This is just speculation on my part, but that may have been intentional. Zip is the most secretive of the main cast, and the way her color scheme draws attention away from her center could be symbolic of how her true personality and passions go unnoticed by everyone around her.
19:44 OI! I'm 23, birdbrain! It's nice to hear that there's a lot of different opinions for the new Generation movie. I like the fact that we have a lot of new characters that have a few things in common with the previous group. Sunny's a great lead heroine and I never expected that we'd have a male member of the main cast. But James Marsden plays Hitch Trailblazer perfectly. Makes me hope we get some great development from him.
And I'm 31 (32 by the end of January). We both got the boot there kiddo. Perhaps it's not so bad. With Silver's "seasoned" age it could just turn out to be a senior style fashion show with stars like Granny Smith. We might not be missing all that much after all.^w^
Me before seeing the movie: Eh, Hitch looks like your typical idiot male/gag character. He'll be the idiot just to make everyone else look better. He'll get a few funny moments, but like with Spike, his schtick will get old fast. Me after seeing the movie: *Casually jumps into the screen and scoops up Hitch* This is mine now. Hitch is best pony.
Pip and Zipp do contrast. Pip has a colorful body and minimal wing color, drawing attention to her. She's a social media influencer and celebrity. Zipp's coloring draws attention from her, She's sneakier, more deceptive, likes to stay out of the spotlight, and more of her identity is tied to flight.
To add to my previous comment, in addition to being outright deceptive, Zipp also has a great deal of hidden depth to be explored. Case in point, she’s a math wiz. When she brings the others to the ruins, she’s seen talking to them in front of a blackboard. On the blackboard is lift and drag equations for airfoil based flight. She had to have derived them herself, g4 pegasi didn’t bother with aerodynamic engineering, they just used magic.
I really like this video! It's always interesting to look at characters and see where the inspirations are coming from. You can always tell a lot from characters based on the color scheme and design
on pipp: I have a theory that pipp was teased online or irl about her wings being much fluffier that the rest of the populous. she found her fans of course but her being so desperate to keep up appearances says a lot. The lyrics of glowing up tell this as well.
In regaurds to Sprout, i was convinced that he’s a direct descendant to the a mane six’s apple family. Which made me dislike him even more as i had a ‘you have betrayed your family’s legacy’ vibe that has yet to be erased
Something else about pip that a lot of people haven't seen to notice (to be fair it is kind of hard to tell) is she's actually got a bigger body type than the rest of the characters Especially if you look at her next to zip Implying she might be a plus size character With pip being a social media influencer I feel like she is the perfect character to tackle body issues Especially issues created by what younger kids have to see online
No arguments here. Pinkie and Rarity were two of my favorites in G4, and Izzy is like the best parts of those two combined... how could I not love her?
I gotta say I knew Firebrand was going to appear when you started talking about sprout and I still laughed. Overall I think the designs are pretty good. I think each of the mane 5 here are a bit more distinct than the mane six. I think Izzy might be my favorite because I think she just look pretty, but I do like Pip especially with her wings working as a feather boa.
9:43 Me before seeing the movie: Eh, Hitch looks like your typical idiot male/gag character. He'll be the idiot just to make everyone else look better. I feel so bad for Firebrand if Sprout ends up being a regularly appearing character when the show comes out. So many bronies are gonna be bothering him for a collab on Sprout centered episodes 😂
I love this especially Pipp’s description. Out of all the characters, Pipp was the first to capture my attention because of her different Pegasus style. Like fluffy wings 😲, how they haven’t thought of that in the first place 🥰🥰🥰. Thanks for your opinion 😊.
I like this. We don’t often take the time to think about color schemes and how that influences character personalities. Will your next video be a review of the movie, or another theme within it? I’d like to hear more about the representational elements, and the stir people made about how woke this seemed.
Very fun analysis on the characters, from the early designs to the final product. Really offers a lot to think about. And very fun cameo from Firebrand. XD
Aaaand... Once more Commander Firebrand has become the punching bag of yet another running gag. Poor guy hasn't seen any major action in quite a while. That said while the scene was made for comedy I'm surprised he never brought up the fact that Sprout's an Earth Pony and he's a unicorn. Anyone mistaking him for out of control Mama's boy (yes that's what I tend to call Sprout) has to first of all somehow manage to ignore the medium sized, pointy horn that's constantly protruding from his forehead. I got really poor eyesight but not even I can make a mistake like that.
I’m glad people can enjoy this movie, But my main criticism is that this 20 minute video has more characterization for each character than the entire movie has for every character.
Pip is underutilized, but personally I found what little screen time she got conveyed quite a bit. We are told Pipp tells her mother everything, a point of contrast with her sister. Later when Pipp confronts Zipp in the alleyway, the thing she's most angry about isn't her show being ruined as her pop idle persona might otherwise suggest, but rather that her sister would just runaway and abandon her when she had been pleading for help. Later still, even after having reluctantly agreed help on the quest, she still needles her sister over having gotten their mother imprisoned. To me everything about Pipp reinforces the notion that she believes in strong family values and solidarity.
Ah! Thank you for the Art Shout-Out. Poor Firebrand… I order that a squad of 250 Crystal Guards break him out. They will at least listen to their commander. Also, How Does Silver Have More Power Over The Soldiers Then Firebrand?!? What the Heck.
I'm sorry but all the concept art is so much better than their final designs, which most likely changed due to budget constraints. I say this because I can't agree with any of your analysis of their finalized designs; there's nothing about Sunny's design that says anything about her. She's just a technicolor horse (with a badly designed face.) *Gets boo'd out of the room* I'm sorry!!!! I want to like these characters but they're too uncanny valley, (far too human looking) and too close to Pixar's style for me to think they're their own property. I think 3D models with a 2D filter would've been a better compromise.
I know many people still aren't too happy with the the G5 character designs. and that's their opinion which is fine but, they still aren't that bad and they still could've always been made worse in fact that's the bright side of it all.
actually at 5:50 in the video I noticed that the color of the "mane" and the "tail" are actually neither of those colors because the actual color is "pink" which means that you're concerned a complete dummy "silver quill" so I suggest you do more research when you do your videos because it can help in the long run basically. :/
It’s interesting what you say about white as a color scheme. It may be the artistic absence of color, but the same is true for black from a physics standpoint. That’s why a surface of black will melt ice faster. I wonder if a white color scheme, despite being an absence of color, might denote coolness. I honestly wasn’t pulled away from Zipp’s body just because she had colored wings and hair. If anything, I like the uniqueness and the contrast.
I have to say that so far, Izzie is my favorite, as she sorta comes off as a slightly more grounded pinkie pie. Pinkie and Rarity are my favorite of the mane 6, so her being spacey like pinkie with a bit of Rarity's dramatics makes her an instant fave.
19:44 Dude. I'm not *THAT* much of a Baby Face! I turned 40 the day before Halloween. Luna is probably the only one in the Post Show that I'm not *TOO OLD* for. -_(\
James Marsden wore a full puffy sleeves and fancy cape Disney prince outfit, so him being in the most boring outfit I've ever seen while his cast mates get to have fun and colorful looks is so annoying to me. LET HIM BE ECCENTRIC, WE KNOW HE CAN PULL IT OFF!
"He's red and has thick eyebrows." Red from Angry Birds "Thick brows are often associated with narcissism." Thinking about how a lot of people in the Invader ZiM fandom design Human ZiM with thick eyebrows and I have no idea if it it is intentional or just they just subconciously went with it... Not gonna lie, it looks fitting.
I reallt love this video!! as someone who loves the details and the things you can represent in a chartacter desing, I really apreciate all of the things in this video, and it' motivates me to practice more and more with my desing skills, really good video!! PD: can someone please take Fire Brand out of his cage? please? XD
It seems like every design suffered a downgrade when being translated from 2D to 3D The way all their edges are smoothed out to fit the 3D style takes away a lot of their personality and just makes everyone look the same. Especially in the faces. All of them have the exact same face. The same rounded cheeks and big eyes that convey nothing other than "I'm happy!" I've never seen a show where the concept art looked consistently better than the final product for every single character. They all look more like toys than they do actual characters. Which now that I think about it, might be Hasbro's intention.
Ok... time to bring my amateur reviewer opinion. Overall G5 had more bright designs despite coat colurs, when i saw the early concepts the 1st thign i though is that they were looking for something similar to G4; specially with Pipp who remembers me to the 1st concepts of Pinkie Pie for FIM or Izzy being a bit like Twilight. I like how they took something from G4 and morfed it into something completely different and lovely to look at. My personal favorite is Izzy, maybe i'm a fan of unicorns; but she clearly is made for being loved or hated, but more to be loved due to be the humoristic lines and energy similar to Pinkie Pie in some way. With the rest of the main cast is also lovely and standing out, but for Zipp i agree on that it's made to look at the more colorful parts of her body like the hair or the wings. I know, big comment; but i like to do this kind of things. My personal score on desings is at least a solid 8/10
Awesome and thought provoking video as always, Silver! As for Brand in 20:20...He can come out when he changes his bad faith review! I know what I said!
I really like that early drawing of Sunny. It expresses her personality more strongly than the final design. Shame they didn't use it. Izzy's design works very well. Her hair is chaotic a bit like Pinkie Pie's. I like that style of the concept art more than the 3d. If they had kept it more similar to G4 but proportioned and shaded a bit differently it could have stood out without that sort of weird look the 3d has.
To be honest, I thought Zip was male for a considerable part of the show. A deeper, more raspy voice, a mane style more like a typical boy would have, and a personality that seems the most masculine of all the females in the show. I made the same mistake with RD.
Eh, the art doesn't bother me, though after seeing the awesome 2d segment at the beginning I wonder if that would work better... My issue is more with the name theming. Not that I have an issue with the [Name] [Name][Name] format, more that shouldn't family members have the same second name? Or am I just being OCD? Anyway, can't wait for the series, I'm _dying_ to know how G4 and G5 are connected... Also, loved the cameo. Poor, poor Josh... 😄
That’s true in the human world, and it seems to be sometimes true in the pony world. The pie family for example seems to keep the same last name, but then you get the Apple family where everyone has a different last name, although all the names are apple themed.
Did anyone notice how similar Sunny’s backstory was to Winston from overwatch? Not that I mind, I really get attached to the visionary bespectacled father figure.
12:33 ahh yes the good ol JoJo reference. Fun fact: and I am going to say this direct from the muzzle of Hirohiko Araki Dio's Goal was to achieve Heaven and have fate be intertwined originally was going to use his stand The World to achieve this goal. (Part 3 Stardust Crusaders DIO) he wanted to create a world with full knowledge of their fate.(Further Explored in Part 6 Stone Ocean)
Some have theorized that the Netflix series might be done in 2D animation, as opposed to the 3D animation we saw in the movie, in order to save on the overall production costs. Many hope that this theory turns out to be false, however...if it's true...well...good luck, folks!
Oh boy, can't wait to see what he says about the story Josh Scorcher didn't say already. G5 Design Show . . . Took the high road and talked about a completely different subject. Respect.
Regarding the spoiler problem, I think OSP's interpretation helps line out what many's issue is with spoilers. You don't get a second first viewing. What a spoiler does is essentially turn a first viewing into a repeat viewing (granted, with different levels depending on the quantity and severity of each spoiler). I have a problem with people getting spoilt as I cherish so many of my first experiences as I had no clue what was going to happen next. Especially in video games, I don't already know how a large portion of the game works, so I'm learning as I'm playing. I remember how, when playing Persona 5 for the first time, I got lost trying to find the Ginza Line and how I, somehow, missed the existence of fast travelling (don't ask how; I legitimately don't know) and how, due to my lack of preparation with SP-restoring items, the final boss got me to the edge of my resources to where, if I didn't land the killing blow, I would've lost (as in, the hit that killed was right before a super attack that definitely would've wiped out the party). If I got spoilt, I would've lost so many of those experiences and there's no way to get them back. The number of times I have personally or heard other people wish they could completely forget a game so they could play through it just like their first play through is incredibly high. So, spoiling them robs them of that opportunity. Of course, spoilers of twists _do_ allow for enjoyment of the journey, but, when that can be easily gotten from a second viewing, I feel that's not really a fair argument (and if you're going to argue that, because it was in the first viewing, you're going to focus less on the journey in repeat viewings, I'd probably imagine what it'd be like if I went in unspoilt and therefore still focus on the spoiler too much anyway) Now, I fully understand that this particular spoiler is a *very* different beast from what I've been talking about, but that's just what you get when you're a hermit like me: you're bizarrely competent at avoiding spoilers, unless you want to be spoilt. So, I never got spoilt on this design; I didn't even know it existed until this very video. Now, the secret behind my hermit status is being incredibly careful on reddit (ie choosing only a few subreddits to join) and otherwise using no social media (plus heavily policing my own UA-cam recommendations).
Very fun and interesting video! Just to drop my own two-cents: going off Friendship is Magic, we've seen pony families that have wildly different coat colors and even names that don't match up...and I kind of prefer it that way. I find myself pushing back against the idea that families in MLP operate (or should operate) in accordance with how they commonly exist among North American/European audiences, with a shared second name or similar appearance. Equestria isn't those places, so why bind it to those norms, at least in that regard? It's not like there aren't plenty of cultures on Earth that also don't have Western-style individual-name-family-name. So my take is: I like when Equestria reminds us this is a different world. So if you have parents who look completely different from their kids or have names that in no way match up beyond a vague theme, go for it! I find myself clinging to that especially when G5 Equestria decided to modernize and become closer to our world anyway. I always liked how, in the early seasons, the equine natures of the characters (pawing at the ground, stomping their hooves, snorting, flicking their tails, etc.) were emphasized more, reminding us they weren't just pony-shaped humans. I kinda regret later seasons didn't keep that aspect.
I do gotta say about the designs. I wish Sunny had different colors (both mane and tail) cause there were SO MANY ponies in G4 had this color scheme. Izzy’s design is pretty cute, Hitch’s is really nice. Sprout I wish had a little bit extra details otherwise he looks like a skinny Big Mac (perhaps a highlight or two in his hair or maybe different colored eyes/heterochromia maybe) make him more unique. The Pegasus sisters are eh at best. I don’t really see them standing out in any way much like Sunny. As for the concept backgrounds they looked so beautiful and perfect for the world of mlp. I can only hope they use those for the show proper.
"This is the dumbest cameo. Ever. Of all time."
Firebrand just casually dropping a Red vs. Blue reference in his cameo. Love it.
I was gonna comment on the same thing!
It wasn't his fault
Someone put Silver in charge.
I'm curious to see if Hitch Trailblazer could live up to the Warrior archetype that you examined in Reinhardt's character Silver.
I wasn't expecting a ted talk on eyebrow grooming

Well duh, everyone aspires to be an epimote of coolness that is Josh Scorcher
I still see Josh is still being sore about his depiction in the movie. 😆
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who was like "I didn't know Josh's OC was in this film" when I first saw Sprout.
Just add facial hair to the OC. He has some in real life and it would make him look more mature.

You wanna read the meaning of life into a pair of eyebrows, eh? Boy howdy, fella. Lemme tell ya, bro...
Him: "Eyebrows have meaning."
Me: *doesnt draw my ocs with eyebrows aside for the main character* O-okay
Peter Calpidi: Really now?

It seems like every design suffered a downgrade when being translated from 2D to 3D
The way all their edges are smoothed out to fit the 3D style takes away a lot of their personality and just makes everyone look the same.
Especially in the faces. All of them have the exact same face. The same rounded cheeks and big eyes that convey nothing other than "I'm happy!"
I've never seen a show where the concept art looked consistently better than the final product for every single character.
They all look more like toys than they do actual characters. Which now that I think about it, might be Hasbro's intention.
here's hoping the actual show fixes these issues somehow
Like the Mane 6?
For faces that can supposed only express happiness the movie did a damn good job conveying weight and nuance in the sadder scenes.
I know he refers to hitch doing the dreamworks smile but really the style is clearly taken from modern CGI Disney movies
This is amazing and a nice way to get to know gen 5 in the funniest way
Ok... time to bring my amateur reviewer opinion.
I was in love with the new movie and I am glad I found your review. I want to see you as a version of G5 soon
Also, have you considered doing reviews of other shows? I’d love to see your take on Disney’s #TheOwlHouse .
Awesome and thought provoking video as always, Silver!
As for Brand in 20:20...He can come out when he changes his bad faith review!
I know what I said!
Honestly, his willingness to be the butt of the joke in this cameo suggests to me that his opinions may have already softened.

GOD DAMN IT. HITCH IS A JOJO REFRENCE
Actually it's sprout who's a jojo reference
I am personally offended that the crowd did not cheer when our host Silver Quill was introduced.

Come on Silver you only got 3 years on me. From one Luna fan to another how about a peek???
The bedsheets looked fine
i don't have Netfix so this is close to the Movie i am going to get. and I am 40 going on 41.
I feel zips colors are a homage to the 1980s the redish pink more like Koolaid
Also very stylish style your sporting there x3
I really like that early drawing of Sunny. It expresses her personality more strongly than the final design. Shame they didn't use it.
Izzy's design works very well. Her hair is chaotic a bit like Pinkie Pie's.
I like that style of the concept art more than the 3d. If they had kept it more similar to G4 but proportioned and shaded a bit differently it could have stood out without that sort of weird look the 3d has.
This birb makes me happy.
To be honest, I thought Zip was male for a considerable part of the show. A deeper, more raspy voice, a mane style more like a typical boy would have, and a personality that seems the most masculine of all the females in the show.
I made the same mistake with RD.
Uh Silver you forgot the most important detail......Sunny's new look at the end of the film.
Decided not to cover that because it is probably the biggest spoiler. Plus I'm curious to see how they're going to tackle it moving forward.
@@MLPSilverQuill Yeah I guess you're right on that. Members of the fandom are going to be debating this for a while.
Not that I mind, I really get attached to the visionary bespectacled father figure.

ahh yes the good ol JoJo reference. Fun fact: and I am going to say this direct from the muzzle of Hirohiko Araki
Dio's Goal was to achieve Heaven and have fate be intertwined originally was going to use his stand The World to achieve this goal. (Part 3 Stardust Crusaders DIO) he wanted to create a world with full knowledge of their fate.(Further Explored in Part 6 Stone Ocean)
"Not old enough"?! I'm 43, I should hope I'm old enough... 😅😅😅
🙃😉
Izzy's personality and energy reminds me of Pinky.
At what time does Firebrand qualify as "Musolini Wannabe"? I mean, just because he and Sprout have the same colors...
When are you going to react to the Gen 5 movie?
and yet white is actually the abundance of color cause its all the color in the visable light spectrum at once
Some have theorized that the Netflix series might be done in 2D animation, as opposed to the 3D animation we saw in the movie, in order to save on the overall production costs. Many hope that this theory turns out to be false, however...if it's true...well...good luck, folks!
I think Sprout looks a little a ponified red from angry birds
Past me before seeing Sprout: Firebrand Cameo?
Present me: Called it!
XD
And FB/JS went aggretsuko at the end. Seems fitting. Maybe the guards will be more competent in the show.
Silver Quill roasting my boss, love it!
Oh my gosh! I love so many of their designs in concept art WAY more!
The eyebrows thing must be a cultural thing. It Japan, it depicted manliness.
A very nice analysis. Funny and detailed, very good work! c:

Oh boy, can't wait to see what he says about the story Josh Scorcher didn't say already.
G5 Design Show
Of course, spoilers of twists _do_ allow for enjoyment of the journey, but, when that can be easily gotten from a second viewing, I feel that's not really a fair argument (and if you're going to argue that, because it was in the first viewing, you're going to focus less on the journey in repeat viewings, I'd probably imagine what it'd be like if I went in unspoilt and therefore still focus on the spoiler too much anyway)
Now, I fully understand that this particular spoiler is a *very* different beast from what I've been talking about, but that's just what you get when you're a hermit like me: you're bizarrely competent at avoiding spoilers, unless you want to be spoilt. So, I never got spoilt on this design; I didn't even know it existed until this very video. Now, the secret behind my hermit status is being incredibly careful on reddit (ie choosing only a few subreddits to join) and otherwise using no social media (plus heavily policing my own UA-cam recommendations).
Her mane was fuxia not magenta.
19:45 Oh come on I'm 19 years old. -_-
With Zipp maybe her being slightly underdesigned could pay off when she becomes queen and get's the accessories.
Huh, I literally did 2 proyects about idea to concept art in design and its evolution in the proces
“This is the dumbest cameo, ever. Of all time”
Aaaaayyy I see that RvB reference!
…Pipp was supposed to be Glinda?
If I'm not old enough, then how old is enough?!
Ironically this fashion show has done a better show at giving some hope for G5 than the movie itself.
"You're not old enough!"
I am 34! ....oh Godhorse I am 34...
I’m 33
How am I not old enough im 23 XD
I have long believes that Sprout was nothing more than Muhammar Quadaffi in MLP......hey! Firebrand wears military uniforms!!!! Light bulb 💡
