  • NOTE: Thanks for the advice, but I'm not interested in shampoo. Any shampoo, natural, bentonite clay, none of it. I know you mean well, I'm just not interested. Thanks!
    How I went shampoo free using baking soda and apple cider vinegar, a one week video journal, with updates through 6 weeks, I show you exactly how I do it (awkward), and tell you how I feel about my hair now!
    FAQ:
    Are you still poo fee?
    9/27 Yes
    Does your hair get dry?
    I also henna my hair, and do deep conditioning on the ends of my hairs, and use protein products on my ends, so no.
    How often do you wash your hair?
    Two or three times a week.
    Don't these ingredients make a bomb?
    No. They're diluted, and the baking soda gets rinsed before the vinegar solution is applied.
    Isn't the vinegar too acidic?
    No...it's diluted.

    I am an Indian an its a very old tip that I am sharing here in regards to henna. If you die your hair with henna, just wash out out with only water. Using shampoo or any other rinsing agent will only take a lot of color out from your hair. After drying your hair, massage mustard oil in your hair and keep it over night. Your color will be locked in for longer duration using this method. Also since henna has drying properties, mustard oil conditions and enhances the shine. Mustard oil can be easily found in Indian stores and we Indians can swear by it. It is the best deep conditioning agent for hair I have known. My great grand mom would apply mustard oil everyday after washing her hair and she didn't have even a single grey strand until she passed away.

      I read mustard can do some damage to your skin and hair...what do think about that? Is it safe to use it? I'm not aware of having any food allergies but I'm not sure if I should use mustard oil because of what I read, but based on your comment I guess you would know more about the whole issue than me.

      Lola .S. I was not aware that the credibility of mustard oil has been questioned before I moved to the states about a year ago. Mustard oil is a vital part of Ayurveda, the ancient indian medicine which is more than 4000 years old. And so traditionally North Indians/Pakistanis have been using mustard oil for baby massage especially during winters. It's traditional to massage a baby before his/her bath. In many families, oils are still preferred over creams and lotions for this purpose. As a kid I have used mustard oil and margosa(neem) leaves to treat skin allergies and eczema and I have never developed any aversions to mustard oil. I cook some indian dishes using mustard oil and also use it for my hair. I have often been complimented for my hair and skin. Unless one has a problem with the strong mustard smell (which I love :P since it reminds me of good food), I see no reason to not use mustard oil. I found some links that might interest you.

    When I did my mom's hair with henna, I cracked an egg in it for moisture. This always made the hair much thicker. If you get tired of henna later on if you crack a whole egg yolk in a wine glass of dark rum for dark hair or light rum for light hair. leave on for 15 minutes then shampoo. you will have stunning highlights. This lasts for about a month.

    I mix the baking soda right before I put it in my hair, and I put a few drops of tea tree oil into the ACV\water mix. Just because it keeps the ends of my hair from being dry.

    I've been cleaning my hair with baking soda water (plus a few drops of essential oil) and rinsing with the apple cider vinegar water (with some essential oil as well) for a little over 2 years now. If you feel like you aren't getting your hair very clean or have build up on the scalp you might want to try scrubbing when you wash it. I scrub the CRAP out of my hair when cleaning it, and then when rinsing it. I also rinse before doing the vinegar. I also only use the vinegar water on the bottom half of my hair or else it gets oily only a day later. I notice this video is older but if you are still using this method I figured I would let you know!

    • @addictedtoelf

      +addictedtoelf Also, I have had great luck with this method as my hair grew 12 inches the first year, which is how fast it grew when I was a kid but stopped during teenage years. :) Good luck!

    You're so beautiful and I love your hair color! I just did colorless henna in my hair today and I definitely feel inspired to try burgundy henna now. I used to use baking soda to clean my hair; but I also mixed it w/ vinegar,honey, cinnamon, and lemon juice. The only thing was that I wasn't conditioning my hair at all for months and it got super damaged. I'm now using this natural shampoo and conditioner that has helped a lot. I might try using baking soda again sometime in the future though.

    Thank you very much for this video. I've started going No Poo about 2 weeks ago, and I'm glad to see that others are struggling too, although your hair looks a lot better than mine. My scalp is a mess, but I've been using spray bottles and more watery solutions than you. I'm gonna try out your method now. As for dry hair, I find that using a few drops of olive oil on my hair after washing or in between when it's too frizzy helps a lot.

    Hi Katrina! Thanks for the post, I'll give the bicarb a try, I was using egg and lemon. You might find red wine vinegar works better on hennaed hair, it certainly seems to on mine (mousy blonde natural dyed with Yemeni henna), I use an organic sulphite free one.

    It was cool to hear and see your no shampoo experiment. I've been dabbling with baking soda and vinegar/water washes too. I would add essential oil to mine though. You've got gorgeous features--eyes and mouth. I heard that there is a transition your hair goes through when you go natural. I can't stand tangled. But I was impressed at what you said about less hair coming out on the brush and a few other things.

    Very informative and helpful, I've been thinking about going no poo for a while so def going to try after the advice in this.
    However, I do recommend you use a glass container for the baking soda and avc rince, hot water can break down the plastic and release chemicals from the bottles.

    Super video. Very good information. Green solution. Also have you heard about Soapwort or Soap Iris? They are soap plants which are great for washing anything. Free of regular detergents. And also Bentonite clay. That is really great. I am planning on making my own shampoo with those things and also with sodium bicarbonate which is baking soda and the vinegar. All of those ingredients are better than regular soaps.

    I've been poo free since December 2012. It's the best thing I had ever done for my hair. I can go about 2 days in between washing my hair. The first time I did it, it felt like I was washing out slime. I was going to be late for work, so I had to give up and try the next day. It took me like half a gallon of the baking soda mixture to finally get all the residue out of my hair. I use white vinegar, since that's supposed to be for oily hair, whereas the apple cider vinegar is for normal to dry.

    1. I'm so happy I'm not the only one with a shower the sounds like a dying rabbit.
    2. I have the same issue with the build up issues in my scalp.
    3. There is a shea butter deep conditioner by cantu in the ethnic section if you throw a towel in the dryer and put that stuff on your hair and then wrap it in a hot towel.... I've bleached my hair twice in one week and didn't fry it doing that. You would then go rinse it out after the towel gets cool. I swear by that product. It's amazing and smells like coconut sunscreen.... It's delicious.
    I'm very seriously going to try this. While holding large objects above my head is not ideal since I've actually partially dislocated my shoulder washing my hair in the shower before, this may be worth it. 🤞

    I would like to thank you for this video, I am so glad I came across it! I have tried your method only once so far, but it was sooo good, I never imagined that it will be so easy to comb my hair after this! So, after watching this video, I decided that I needed to try this! I love it, but there is one thing that I added. I mix my own "leave in conditioner" which is simply olive oil, almond oil, and water. I put in a spray bottle and shake it up. I spray it on after my hair has had a minute to dry. I'd say 2/3 of the mix is water and the rest is like 50/50 with the oils, and my hair feels the same as it does when I use good shampoos that I can no longer afford.

    Plz try my suggested solution. My teen daughter has same oily hair problem. She also gets dandruff because of that. But since I have used the dried orange peel powder paste on her scalp once a week, her problem is almost gone. You can this powder in any big Indian store or better make it home like I do. Just dry some orange peels after you done eating them in hot sun outside in your backyard or patio for a few days during daytime. Like around 8- 10 days in row or until they hvee lost all the moisture then make powder in a blender or something. Then use it on your scalp everywhere for 20 min and wash it away. You won't have oily hair problem as much. The consistency of the powder should be that of pancake batter. Good luck.

      that is really interesting. My daughter is entering puberty and I don't know if her hair is overly greasy (although come to think of it it did look greasy today) but her scalp stinks! Even after washing it still smells though not as strong. I think I am going to try your suggesting and switch her from commercial shampoo.

    • @Katrinaosity
      @Katrinaosity  10 років тому +4

      mahesh b Well, I don't have the issue now...the oily scalp was a side effect from shampoo. Switching to baking soda and vinegar cured it. It was because stripping the sebaceous glands with shampoo just causes them to overcompensate by producing excess oil. It gets really oily while your scalp ph balances out, and then it gets better.

    If you like coconut oil you should try 100% pure argan oil, it's even more moisturizing, so healthy for hair and skin, really helps spilt ends & I actually use it on my face instead of moisturizer, I have super dry skin & the argan oil is way more hydrating & actually really helped get rid of acne too. Doesn't smell as good as coconut oil, doesn't really smell like anything.

I know henna gets darker over time, but I also know different hennas from different countries have different outcomes. So, just curious if your hair is deeper now because it deepens over time, or are you using a different brand henna now than here? I didn't think I'd be able to, but once the ph of my scalp adjusted, it's not a problem. If it gets dirty faster because of dust and such, just wash it again, no worries.

    The reason why it felt greasy in the first couple of weeks/days is because your hair is getting rid of all the chemicals that the shampoo and conditioner has been pumping into your scalp. it takes about 3-6 weeks for it to come back to a completely normal and even better outcome

    I would try a super natural organic type shampoo like Natures Gate etc... Once or twice a month just to get out oil build up. Significantly less damaging than regular shampoo's and conditioners. So many great non chemical shampoos out there . I am huge fan of Shea Moisture products myself. Just a suggestion. 😊

    Have you tried Chagrin Valley all natural shampoo bars? They are all pure herbs,butter's and essential oil's and all natural organic ingrediants. I believe they even have a coconut milk shampoo bar which I know you mentioned you love. I use these and follow up with a ACV rinse and there is a adjustment period because they are all natural and replace all the natural good oils and nourisment to your hair but I have been so happy with them! Love your hair and you have a little baby doll face.

    fabulous vlog! you are so beautiful. I was watching this because I've been doing the baking soda and apple cider vinegar now for a year and also love it. but I just dyed my hair red last night and was unsure if the baking soda fades the color or not. My hair hasn't taken to the red yet very well so I'm afraid to do anything that will fade it extra fast. Yours seems to have done well. I realize you made this video a couple years ago, but one tip if you're still doing this is to use spray bottles to spray it on your hair in the shower. makes the mixtures last VERY much longer.

    I applied about two table spoons of baking soda and got it to have the consistency of mud, and then massaged it into directly into my hair while drenched. Your formula seems allot more diluted. Then I took the apple cider vinegar and added 3 parts water to a cup, and let it work for about a minute. Now My hair is remarkably shinier, softer, and more moisturized than it ever was even with the supposed 'high quality' brands.

      Crystal Darnell Still doing the same thing. Overall, it's darker through the lengths because it doesn't have as much damage, so it doesn't bleach in the sun as easily. Still do my henna, still do deep conditioning once a week, or every 2 weeks. Love it!

    Does this effect your skin at all? Any increase in dryness or outbreaks?

    • @Katrinaosity
      @Katrinaosity  10 років тому

      No! It's wonderful for your skin, because the vinegar balances the baking soda, leveling the pH balance of it. Also, you're not stripping natural oils out of your scalp, which is what makes it overcompensate with more oil. I use a deep conditioner on the ends of my hair, but not on my scalp, so there's nothing making my scalp dry out either.

    How are you removing henna with this method after dyeing?I am using it also,dark red,but it's a pain in the ass removing it even with a regular shampoo.Also,I want to begin with "no poo" method cause I'm allergic to everything (that's why I'm using henna instead of dye),but I want to stay red :)

    • @Katrinaosity
      @Katrinaosity  10 років тому

      Before I went poo free I used to use a TON of conditioner to rinse the henna, and it took freaking forever. Since going poo free my hair is so much smoother, and the henna rinses right out with just water. :) I simply rinse it out with warm water, and then condition the ends with a coconut oil conditioner, like organix. The first few nights I put an orange pillow case on my pillow, because my hair will rub a little color off for a couple days, and you can feel it in your hair a little bit, like after you've use a dry shampoo, sort of powdery. The next time I wash my hair after that, I just use my regular baking soda and vinegar rinses, and it's all smooth again.

    I really want to to try this, but I fear that my hair might just fall off! :)
    I guess I should just be careful to properly dilute the substances, so that the baking soda is not too alkali and the vinegar not too acidic. This method seems tricky because every home has different water (different ph and composition), so a recipe that works for someone might not work for another.
    I think I'll try testing the ph of each solution until I get the perfect 5.5.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

    White vinegar is less moisturizing than apple cider vinegar, so using that to rinse out the baking soda and then rinsing that out and then using the apple cider vinegar to help moisturize could be beneficial :)

    • @Katrinaosity

      I rinse the baking soda with water, and the apple cider vinegar and water mixture is to balance the ph.

    I could be wrong, but to me it seems that your roots got lighter in colour, possibly because of the baking soda, it's a mild bleaching agent. Perhaps that's why the gradient is smoother? :)

    • @Katrinaosity
      @Katrinaosity  9 років тому

      Café au lait You rinse it out right away, and it's very diluted. My roots are blonde, so that could be why. Henna darkens your hair when you dye with it, instead of lifting, so when it grows out my roots are a couple shades lighter.
